My husband and I are thinking about remodeling our kitchen...top to bottom - cabinets, counter top, floor, appliances, lighting...all new. My question is does anyone know if it's possible to just get a contractor to design my new kitchen and we do all the actual work? In other words, we need help with design/plan and then we would do all of the ordering of materials and install. My husband is a plumber and very good at carpentery. He actually built our house himself back in 1985 while working full-time. God love him!!:lovestruc

Lowe's will do this for you. We took them the measurements of our kitchen and the changes we wished to make and they were able to help us out.

I also suggest Lowes. We did this in 2002 and the kitchen planner actually came to our home to do final measurements before the cabinets were ordered. There was no charge for this. She didn't push us to the most expensive styles or anything and was so very pleasant to work with.

We redid ours for around $13,000.

We put in laminate floor and I would suggest avoiding these. I am not very pleased with ours.

Any kitchen design center, big box store or custom store, will do the design for you. You will probably have to pay for the design if you don't buy your kitchen through them but the money you will save doing the work yourself will more then pay for it. Personally I would stay away from Lowe's/Home Depot if you want to go that route. I would find a certified kitchen designer or an architect to do your plans.

Cabinet stores will do this for you if you're buying your cabinets from them.

Many of the kitchen stores around us do the design for a fee. The fee is then subtracted off the cost of the cabinets if you order from them. Some of them offer the install and others recommend contractors to do the work. Either way the design is always included if you are purchasing the materials from them. We plan to have a kitchen design company do the design. We will get the cabinets from them and possibly the tile. The other materials including the countertops, appliances, and faucets we can find ourselves cheaper by cutting out the middle man.

Good luck! We are doing a kitchen remodel now. I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel now, but I have had no kitchen since the second week of July.

We did use a contractor, and he has been invaluable. But, first the kitchen designer at the cabinet store designed the new layout. We also had to hire an architect because we did a bump out and added a laundry room so our laundry room became the mud room.

But, anyway, if your DH is not making the actual cabinets, then I am sure the cabinet people can design it.

A good place to get info is www.gardenweb.com These people know everything (much like we know everything about Disney!). Click on home forums and then click on kitchens. There are plenty of Do It Yourself people. They abbreviate that DIY which took me forever to figure out!!

We remodeled our kitchen last year.

We went to a kitchen and bath place. They designed our kitchen and if we didn't want them to do the work it would have cost us for the design. Also went to the big box places but they didn't really design it for us they took our measurements and said this is what cabinets fit our space. The kitchen place was custom cabinets and they could make a design with smaller or larger cabinets because everything was made from scratch big box use only certain sizes.

Good luck with the remodel. Redoing a kitchen is so worth every penny. I love my pot drawers don't know how I lived with out them or my cookie sheet bottom cabinet.

A good friend of ours had an electrician wire an outlet in the garage for a stove and fridge during their kitchen remodel. They had 2 small kids and the though of going out to eat for every meal wasn't all that appealing. She said it was the best thing they ever did-and they kept the old stove and fridge in there after they were done. She would often cook out there in the summer when it was really hot and it was great for holiday meals.
