Okay, so I have the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer (had it for about 2-3 years now) and I LOVE it. But sometimes I would like to just take out a hand mixer instead of using the stand mixer (mainly for mashed potatoes)

I just received a gift card to Bed, Bath & Beyond and plan on using it towards getting a Kitchen Aid Hand Mixer. I went on their website and noticed they had many different kinds (5speed, 6speed, 9speed, etc) Aside from the different speed levels, is there any difference between them? Like I said, I will mostly use it to do my mashed potatoes with. The heavier mixing will definately be mixed in the stand mixer.

Thanks!!!

I only have a 3 speed kitchenaid and I want to upgrade. I love my little mixer, but something I don't have enough speed options for what I'm doing. My highest speed doesn't seem fast enough sometimes. With heavier ingredients, I worry I will burn out the motor. I have my eye on the 9 speed.

My dad has a Kitchen Aid hand mixer that gradually increases in speed. Mine, also a KA, doesn't do that and sometimes when I go to mix something, even the low speed splatters everything everywhere.

Also, check TJMaxx if you have one. I was at ours the other day and they had great prices on KA hand mixers!

I gave DD21 the 9 speed for Christmas this morning. I figured the more speeds the better!! I also got a whisk attachment and a dough hook attachment. She doesn't have the stand mixer yet and won't get it for a year or so, until he is settled in an apartment, so the 9 speed hand mixer seemed a good choice for her now.

My DH got me a 5-speed KA handmixer years ago...because I didn't alway like to bring out the big KA, when I was mixing something little like a cake mix.

I LOVE IT. I was actually surprised he didn't just get me a $10 hand mixer. :lmao: But - I think he went with the KA, since I really liked the stand mixer, plus - he doesn't often get to buy me presents that have a cord attached.:lmao:

I have the four speed and love it. DD is getting the six speed for Christmas. It's the thing she wanted more than anything else this year.

This is a good thread! I have a KA stand mixer and a Cuisinart Hand Mixer. My hand mixer absolutely stinks. It throws stuff all over the place. Now, I've owned hand mixers before this and they NEVER did this. No matter what speed, stuff is all over the place. Yesterday I made some frosting for sugar cookies and I had confectioner's sugar all over me, all over my counter, and all on the floor. It just went everywhere. Absolutely ridiculous.

So, I'm looking for tried and true reviews of you hand mixers that DO NOT do this.

tip of the day-

when using my hand mixer for powdery ingredients, like flour or powdered sugar, I poke the beaters through a paper plate before attaching to the mixer. Then the plate fits over the bowl and voila, no mess. Just make sure the beaters can move freely.

So do you think the 4-5 speed one will be enough if I'm just using it for mashed potatoes? I don't assume I would need a bigger one, right?

Sounds like my Sunbeam piece of junk. It also "revs up" so I never have to put it at more than the lowest speed...it'll end up at the highest speed inside a minute anyway.

Though I can't imagine using a mixer for mashing potatoes! I once used a blender in my single days and ended up with potato glue. I ate it (single, alone, broke...eat it or be hungry), but it was horrible. I would be too afraid of something similar happening! Someday I'll get a ricer for mashed potatoes but for now we use our cheapie hand masher from Ikea. :)

I've used all different kinds of ways to make my mashed potatoes. The potato ricer (I like that), hand mixer (have always liked it---maybe you just beat it too much?) and since having my Kitchen Stand Mixer, I've been using that. But even though my mixer stays on my counter, I'm just sick of using that big ole thing when doing my potatoes. I have to transfer the potatoes from the pot that I cooked them in, into the mixer's bowl, add my stuff and beat away. But I'm thinking if I get the hand mixer I can just drained them, put them back in the same pot, add my stuff and beat away with the hand mixer. I figure it would be less dishes that way too. I've owned other hand mixers but in the end, the really sucked and thought since I love my KA stand mixer, I would love the KA hand mixer. I'm just wondering which speed to get (like I said, I will probably only use it for my potatoes and maybe the occasional pudding or other light stuff) I would use the stand mixer for all my heavier foods. :thumbsup2

Same here!

I've done mashed potatoes many ways and they are find with a hand mixer or a stand mixer. The key is not to overdo it and not to use those boiling potatoes that turn to glue. Russets seem to work best and never get shiny and glue-like, no matter what the mashing method.

I have a $15 Walmart special hand mixer that I have used for years and haven't had any problems. I always use it for mashed potatoes (3 speed) and haven't had a problem yet.
