kid's shows and comm'rcls from NorthEast area during 70's (spinoff of Mt Airy thread)

msdzny duck- oh yeah . Forgot to include the one and only.........
Crazy Eddie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It would be remiss not to mention him in such
a discussion. Along with Newmark and Lewis.

mickeemouse- Elec Company? Sure, could start a thread on memories of that
alone.

punkin- New Jersey's got it!!!! I know and remember EXACTLY what you're
referring to!! LOL!!!

jvl1018- PIX, OH YES. Not only those who would miss it, AND IT WAS AT
A SNAIL'S PACE, sometimes its obvious they had such a young child maybe 3,
that didn't even get the concept to begin with.

kat3668- Witchiepoo was on Pufunstuf, while the sea monster thing was
Sigmund and the Sea Monsters by Sid and Marty Kroft.

punkin- for a serious lsd trip produced series.....Remember Lidsville? THAT WAS WEIRD.

Well the enthusiasm for the kid's shows memories I felt warranted this thread.
This is gonna be a LONG list here we go.

Magic Garden-share any memories you wish, seems to be a good one for its uniqueness.

New Zoo Revue-remember this one? Freddy the Frog,Charlie Owl, Henrietta
Hippo ,Disney sized character costumes, don't seem to recall more than one set of backgrounds, just a little village.

Favorite :goodvibes- Wonderama - especially when hosted by Bob McAlister. Nothing more exciting then when they would do the "disco", watching kids just "stand" around hoping eventually the concept of dancing would dawn on them.

Did anyone else get the jeepers from the opening credits of the Underdog show with that demonic looking giant monster making his way down the street? Didn't help any to have a theme that sounded like a Gregorian chant
of sacrifice playing behind him. oooowa oooo wa oooo wa oooooo.

Capt Kangaroo- a classic. Stiil get a good laugh when remembering
how Bunny Rabbit would set him up to steal the carrots.

Bowling for Dollars- ok not a kids show but what cheap fun!!!!

Alright let's get to the commercials

Apex Tech- why, you don't need to dream of a high paying job someday that may lead to other things. You've made peace with the fact that you'll never rise above manual labor right? Then Apex Tech is for you. Not only wiil you complete your training in a short time, BUT YOU WILL RECEIVE a free set of
tools upon completion of your program. Now he can't take the first step.
Oh No......YOU MUST TAKE THE FIRST STEP AND CALL HIM. Said in a manner
as if anyone was sitting at home saying to themselves "Yeah,i'd like to sign up, but I'll wait till HE calls ME.
That was funny :rotfl: Great for your self-esteem!

The Albert Merrill School- "'scuse me but aren't you Jimmy Randolph?
That's right I am blah.blah, blah, OF COURSE! If you qualify you be could eligible for a gov't education grant or loan call now..."
Do a google search on Albert Merrill school you won't believe what it turned out to be.

CONTROL DATA INSTITUTE- It would state its number in a manner usually
reserved for gov't mind control interregations. "DIAL 757 -38-88! 757 -38-88!
CONTROL DATA INSTITUTE THIS PHONE CALL COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!!!

Playworld -mentioned in Mt Airy thread, ending with camera focusing on
male pair of lips with lipstick on?????? As it sang "Prices so low, low, low
low,lowwwwwwwwwwww,PLAYWORLD!!!!!!!

Here's a good one, could definitely count on seeing it at the half hour mark
of WOR Channel nine's Championship Wrestling Saturday's at midnight. The
Bob Backlund days for you wrestling fans.

We open up with a camera panning across an elegantly appointed living room
over the piano with a bust resting near or on it, we hear the "lovely" strains
of the song "A Stranger In Paradise" only to be told by a distinquished white
bearded gentlemen in white tie and tails that "did you know Stranger in
Paradise is actuallY polofexian dance no 3 by borodin? Yes this and many other classics can be yours, blah,blahblah,.............."in the age were we
were all used to 30-60 second commercials at the most, THIS DAMN THING
WENT ON FOR FIVE MINUTES!!!! YOU TURN THE KNOB AWAY FOR 30 SECONDS
TURN BACK- STILL ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Tom Carvel Ice Cream commercials- aside from that voice of his which
must have seen its share of cigars and pipes over the years, he makes
a point at one point to tell you in an overly enthusiastic tone that each Carvel
is run by an individual store owner!!!!! WOW!! So that should signal to me how extra special i'll be taken care of at my Carvel's!!!!!
It's an individual store owner!!!!!!!!!!!
Not quite........................our lovable 'ol Tom Carvel was REALLY saying,
"Dear child should you encounter any legal trouble at any Carvel Ice Cream
Store???? DON'T COME RUNNIN TO ME YOU LITTLE......! I AM NOT LIABLE!!!
WHAT PART OF INDIVIDUAL STORE OWNER DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?!?!?!?
Gee ,thanks Tom......

Now if you absolutely LOVE the memories here and want to share more I
would like to direct you all to RETROJUNK.COM and its forums.
Although so far no responses to Mt Airy commercial post over there,
they may be majority 80's nostalgia not old enough for 70's,still
worth checking out though.

Well I could go on but that's enough for now, let's here from you and your
responses and memories. Ciao for now.

Those are the ones I remember .especially Wonderama & Bowling for Dollars
(aka Mets pregame show!)

Do you guys remember Romper Room and the magic mirror?

How about the Bugaloos? Dr. Shrinker? Elektrawoman and Dynagirl?

Romper Room was great, she never did say my name, ever! I used to tell my Mom she couldnt see me! Wonderama was my absolute favorite. Each week I so badly wanted to be the one opening the snake can and finding those beautiful flowers to win the bike! :flower1:

Thanks so much for the great memories, that was fun! :goodvibes

Ok how about these....

WPIX Every afternoon they would play abbot and costello movies. i just loved these as a kid.

They also had creature feature. Lots of old sci fi movies. The one with the crawling giant eye always scared me.

How about old radio from New York... I used to love listening to Jean Shepard on WOR. He would always tell all those great stories about flick and schwartz (remeber from Christmas Story) This is one of the reasons I love Carosell of Progress so much ( Jean Shepard is the voice of the father).

Does anyone remember the Banana splits.....use to be so jealous of the amusement parks because I never had been to one...
How about that show Sidd kroft... the one with the sea monster in it and the freaky witch with the striped stockings........ oh great now this is gonna bug me!!
I also loved that show small wonder with Vicki the robot...

I loved the banana splits, so much so that when those 'wet paint' dripping tshirts were the rage, I got one that said "banana split"

That summer, we visited Kings Dominion. At the time, they had rights to the Banana Splits characters. It was 105 degrees that day, but they were out. I have a picture with Fleagle and Snork. They made a big deal about my shirt. Poor employees in those costumes, because I got my very first migraine that day from the heat and I was wearing shorts and a tshirt!

My DH wonders how many Ross Apollo bicycles they gave away on Wonderama!

Love the Banana Splits! Use to also watch The Friendly Giant

The best commercial of all time:

If you've got a passion for fashion
And you've got a craving for savings
Take the wheel of your automobile
And swing on down to Ideal!

It was shown CONSTANTLY during the afternoon cartoons. And featured a bunch of middle-aged gals in polyester double-knit leisure suits pretending to be runway models.

I remember Boom Town!
What about the "Bozo the Clown" show?!
Romper room and the magic mirror? I couldn't believe she knew those kids birthdays! I was impressed!

What about "Star of the day"? It was a talent show out of MA :"Star of the day, who will it be? Your vote may hold the key. It's up to you, tell us who will be star of the day!" :rotfl2: This was waaaaay before email. You would've had to mail your vote.

Commercials: From that same area: "This is Ernie Bach! Come on doooown!" My dad still screetches that.

Oh yeah, remember when Barry and Elliot didn't have grey hair?

Thanks for the memories :goodvibes

I remember alot of this stuff and the commercials too!
I always wanted to be picked for the kid that got to yell PIX!

Does anyone remember the show called Al Alberts Showcase or something like that? It was based in Philly but we got the channel-it was channel 6. There were kids on there who sang, danced and told jokes and called him "Uncle Al" and the wife was Aunt Stella. The little girls always wore really fancy dresses. I never missed that show!

O'malleyalleycat,

Do you remember this one by Manny Gorden? ENJOY! ENJOY! The great outdoors of Northeast Pennsylvania.

How about the commercial for Barbizon (sp) School of Beauty? I can barely remember it, but I do remember that they advertised it all the time.

Bob Backlund was my hero! :lmao:

I'm falling asleep now because "Beautiful Mt. Airy Lodge" is still stuck in my head. I think it just may be the cure for insomnia.

Great post....

Romper Room, Boom Town....
How about Dark Shadows??????

And... the "Railroad Salvage" commercials??

*** I have a pic of my son (now 17) with "Peter Panda" at Child world....

Oh, I forgot to say, I loved Zoom. I was a Zoomaholic! I loved Bernadette.

Ah, Zoom alumnus Bernadette Yao (on the back row left in the photo below). A good friend of mine knew her; they went to the same high school outside Boston, and she actually did some background vocals for him on promo recordings back in the early 1980s (he was doing songwriting at the time). From what my buddy has shared, Bernadette grew into a warm, quirky, insightful lady. Apparently, she had plans of a career as a producer, but unfortunately those were derailed when she suffered some serious injuries in an accident circa 1990. These days, she runs a small local "healing practice" in Massachusetts.

Remember on the WNEW Ten o'clock news, the newscaster would come on and say, "It's ten o'clock. Do you know where your kids are?"

Amazing Grace-they still make the announcement at 10 pm! I remember the background picture used to be of kids faces and they all look scared to death. When I was little,it made me think I dont ever want to stay out past 10 because bad stuff might happen!

OMG! Whenever I heard this, it would scare me to death. :scared1: I don't know why. Just the sound of that guys voice. Kinda like he knew something I didn't or something. Very creepy.
