Kids of Different Ages

We're coming in Oct with DS9 and DD5. I am trying to keep us together as much as I can, but do have separate rides /FP for things such as

Haunted Mansion - DS9
Splash Mountain - DS9
Little Mermaid / Beauty and Beast / Disney JR - DD5
7DMT - DS9
Star Tours - DS9
Great Movie Ride - DS9
etc

Do you also find you have to split up rides and if so, which are too old / scary for your younger one?

I have that issue. I have DD12, DD7 and DS 17months. my DD12 has no interest in seeing characters and DS17 can't sit still long enough for shows and my DD7 loves everything so she is not the issue. We have so many Fast Passes that are split between me and my DH to go with the kids on what they want to do.
We are doing BBB for DD7 so I decided to let DD12 do Pirates League because Pirates are cooler then princesses. As for DS17Month well oh well hopefully he will nap

And I thought it was tough with two kids of different ages I have BBB booked too for my DD5. Think it's great they have Pirate League (but my DS wouldn't be interested)

That's my issue...a lot of rides I know he'd love but she's on the fence. She's not a dare devil though and gets scared. Those are just a few examples...

It depends on the personality of the 5yo. My 5yo will go on SDMT, BTM and SPlash but not Haunted Mansion. Too scary for her.

Yeah...I can look, but we haven't told our kids about our trip yet, so can't show her before our FP date (my FP day is Wed...or Tues at midnight, and we'll probably tell them very end of Aug)

We don't split up unless younger DD doesn't meet the height requirement. Now that she is taller, we'll try to encourage her to ride everything but of course won't force her to ride anything she doesn't want to ride. As much as possible, we ride as a family, since vacation is about us spending time together. She has surprised us with the rides she has been willing to try and has enjoyed (Haunted Mansion included).

We pretty much go together. If one can't/won't do something, then we use FP+ so it's not waiting for long and/or find something nearby to do. It won't be a big deal to hang outside Haunted Mansion while the others ride. We'll go through the interactive line part at least! It's also a nice way to build in breaks! For something like Little Mermaid - we're all doing it. Our 11 year old son will do just fine watching it. We only make exceptions if someone is scared. For something like Star Tours, we're hoping all will do it. The 11 and 8 year old definitely will. But the 5 year old has some sensory issues, so we won't know until we're there how much he feels he can handle this year. We couldn't even get him on Dumbo last time! We've found it's best to plan the rides/attractions and let those skip it who are too scared and then they take a break or do something nearby. The eldest can go back out at night if he wants - he's done that one some trips, usually no more than once though.

My 5 and 11 year old will not be doing Splash Mountain. (The 8 year old will). They don't want to get splashed. The 11 year old is doing much better than he used to - and could deal with it if we forced him on. (Which we're not going to do). But the 5 year old still freaks out if a raindrop falls on him. So, nope, not going to try to get him on that one as it won't end well. My 8 year old was doing Splash at 5 and enjoyed it though.

They'll all do Great Movie Ride, though there are two parts where there might be some eyes closed for the younger two. They're fast parts however.

For characters, we just do a few. We'll do the character spot at Epcot. And that's all that is scheduled. Otherwise, only if there's a short line and we're walking by anyway!

The 8 year old is refusing to do HM on our next trip. She did it at 5 and it went great. The youngest did well at 2.5. But she totally freaked out on it at 6, resulting in the youngest at 3.5 freaking out. So, we'll see if I can get her back on it. I'm not counting on it.

We're hoping to all do 7 Dwarfs. There is a chance we won't get the 5 year old on it - but he's more sensitive than the normal 5 year old. I would plan for 7 Dwarfs for most 5 year olds.

We skip Disney Jr. We did it once and I did not like it at all. The kids weren't into it either - and they were very young then. We don't have cable tv, so maybe that played a part of them not being into it. But I didn't feel it was very well done either. However, we're taking several years ago. It was enough that we decided we didn't need to do it again though.

You could show her before your FP date. We did a surprise trip - as in, telling the kids minutes before they got into the car that morning. The kids knew we would go back to Disney at some time - they thought it wouldn't be for 3 years, as that was our initial plan. But then a great PIN code came and it ended up being the very next year. We would talk about "when we go to Disney" as something very far away. You could say, "when you're older and we go to Disney, is this something you might want to try?" If you put when you're older, then a child often thinks of their age number being at least a year away, often more. No need to tell them it's coming up faster than it is if you're waiting to surprise!

But the problem with FP+ is you need to decide on the 3 FP beforehand (which is this tues for me). And I don't want to waste a FP on DD if I know she won't go on, whereas we can use it on something else for her. For non-FP attractions it's not an issue as they can each let us know when we are there.

Yes...for Great Movie Ride, I heard there are two scary parts, with one with an alien coming from above (of smoethign like that). Something liek that would really scare my DD so have opted to skip it (but that's not a FP one so that can change).

I do have DIsney JR makred for DD, but mostly as she needs something while DS is on Star Tours or Great Movie Ride. And I think it would be quite young for him.

Was debating bout 7DMT. And since I'm not sure about her, I thought it's better to try for 2 FP than 4 FP since it's one of the the though ones to get. On the flip side, I have her for FP for Big Thunder, which I realized after doesn't make much sense if I have her skipping 7DMT

My 5 YO DD was able to do all of those things. There's no height requirement for HM or GMR, so I don't understand why everyone can't ride together.

Perhaps not. My 6 year old son was terrified, left the ride crying along with my 3 nephews, ages 5, 7, 8. Depends on the child.

I think Haunted Mansion would scare my DD5 as well as the alien scene from Great Movie Ride (from how it was described...never been on GMR)
