We have done this many, many times, and have received mixed results. It really does depend on the restaurant (and even the server). I would say we had no problems about 60% of the time. The rest of the times there was some sort of issue or restriction. Also, when some sort of restriction was made, it usually related to the kids drink, and the age cutoff was strictly 10 years old. See the list below:
Occasional issues encountered when attempting to order off the kids menu for guests over 9 years old at WDW TS restaurants (these are individual issues, not simultaneous ones):
- A kids drink is not included
- A single kids drink is included, but no refills
- A kids drink is included, but refills are limited to soda (no juice/milk)
- Only one (out of 2) sides are included, AND no drink whatsoever included
Below is a copy/paste of a write-up I made about this very issue. This was on an 8-day trip we made to WDW for my family of 7 back in May 2021.
"At a variety of table service restaurants we found incredibly inconsistent application of their rules around kids meals for kids older than 9, and even then, inconsistent rules around what kids drinks were refillable vs not. We learned that we needed to ask what their rules were each time we visited a new restaurant. Most TS restaurants would let anyone (even adults!) order a kids meal with no hesitation, adjustments, and all drinks (including juice and milk) were all refillable. One restaurant would let anyone order the meal, but were inconsistent on what drinks were allowed to be refilled (we think they landed on no milk/juice for anyone, and no refills for anyone over 9, but at least you got your "1st" drink). Yet one more TS restaurant (the Plaza at MK) had the most restrictive policy that we experienced, and have never seen the likes of which before. They said that anyone over 9 who wanted a kids meal could order one, but no drink whatsoever was included (let alone refills) and instead of "choose two sides," you could only choose one. This particular restaurant was on our last day, and was going to be our "end-of-trip, get-what-you-want, desserts/milkshakes, anything goes, celebration dinner," but when they started off the dinner with being incredibly miserly by telling my daughter that she couldn't get that $0.30 package of grapes as her second side because she was 11 instead of 9, we changed course real fast. Everyone had water, we ordered no desserts or alcohol, and our final bill was less than if we had just done QS. I budgeted like $300 for this meal (it wasn't a signature restaurant or anything, so that's pretty generous for the Plaza), and we ended up spending around $85 including tax and tip for 7 people. I've never spent so little at a TS restaurant, but since they want to penny pinch, we can play that game too. All our other places who didn't hassle us got dessert orders, alcohol orders, appetizers, larger tips, etc. What's the saying? Cut off your nose to spite your face? Can't see the forest for the trees? Whatever applies here, but after an 8-day trip for 7 people to disney world and all thousands of dollars of merchandise, tickets, and food, them hassling us over a "second side" just seemed so petty to us, making us feel like we needed to respond in kind.
