I have a question about portion size.

Is the kids meal at Disney big enough to feed my 12 yo and 9yo girls? They are not big eaters, but a happy meal at McDs is not enough for them.

if a happy meal is not enough for them then I would say get a regular meal, not a kids meal at DL

One of the menus I looked at. the kids meal was only up to 9 years old. Yikes! in a few months I will have a 9yo.

You are always welcome to order off the kids menu.

I agree, I think for most kids when they are close to 9 the amount of food is not enough for a day when they walk several miles.

My DS was 9 last year, and he is not a big eater. It was not enough for him last year. Actually, he was talking about this yesterday. Must have made quite an impression on him! The exception to this was the chicken at the Plaza Inn. That was enough for him.

We normally split adult meals for the kids (a big one shares with a little one). If we need to supplement with an extra side we do.

That is what we were going to do also. We have 3 kids, and we figured the almost 2 yo would split with us and the maybe grab a snack or an extra side.

We too find that splitting is the way to go. Some meals are more splittable than others. Here are a couple of examples of what our family of 4, 2 adults and 2 boys ages 10 and 12 do: Split two fried chicken dishes at Plaza Inn getting double mashed potatoes on one of the plates or split two or three pasta dishes at Pizza Port depending on how hungry everyone is. Then we all get water.

This is true, however it should be noted that when adults or older children order from the kids menu at a TS restaurant (ie BB, CO, CC, WCT, etc etc) the guideline is "double/double", meaning that they will double the serving for double the price. Ordering for an adult or older child at a CS restaurant is very easy, there is no "double/double" rule at CS. :)

We split dishes as well. At PI the girls get a pasta dish, DBF and I get a chicken plate, we add 2 side salads (for DD12 and myself) and we are all very full when we are done. At Pizza Port we get 1 salad, 1 pasta, foccacia bread and 1 or maybe 2 slices of pizza and we are always stuffed.

My kids are really big eaters! They asked for seconds at Wine Country Trattoria on their pasta dish. I had a 9 and a 7 year-old at the time. They have celebrated a birthday since last summer.

I have a lot of nieces and nephews. I have a group of nieces and nephews that I love taking to Goofy's as I definitely get my money's worth!!! I've gotten them adult meals since they were about 5 (2 will split and then eat the adults leftovers!!!!!!)

I have another set that I can buy them a kids meal for 2 to split and we will have left overs. (I hate having to feed this group.)

Adult meals can be large and easy to share among 3 kids.

On our trip last week we bought a kid's meal at Hungry Bear (which is counter service) for my newly-turned 7 year old.

It was supposed to be chicken tenders, and apples. Have you ever seen popcorn chicken? The pieces are a little bigger than a regular sized marble? That's what the "chicken tenders" were...and there were only 3 of them. With a bag of about 8 apple slices. Hardly enough to be considered lunch for a 7 year old. The chicken was ridiculous. The meal cost $5.99.

After that, we just bought adult sized meals for our 7 & 10 year old to split, and that worked out much better.

Maybe other counter service restaurants have better offerings for kids?

If they are hungry after a happy meal, better ideas might be the adult meals at Pizza Port or Plaza Inn. Both have large adult meals for about the price of 2 kids meals, and considerably more food. For 3 adults, we usually get 1 meal and 1 salad and share.

Most sit down locations don't allow over 10 to order a kids meal. An exception we have found is the Make Your Own Peanut Butter sandwich at Carnation Cafe. Never had them question my older nieces when they ordered.
