I would probably try to get four different colors or styles. We bought our youngest two sons ipods last year. We wrote their initials with a sharpie on the earbuds and it rubbed off. We constantly hear the "he has my earbuds!" This might keep something like that from happening.
Quite honestly, if they aren't audiophiles, you can probably get away with the cheap headphones for under $10/each. My oldest kills headphones/earbuds. He's lucky if he gets six months out of a pair. I would hate to spend $20 on a pair only to find that they've been destroyed two months later.
