Kids free tickets - upgrade to AP when at WDW?

Just checking... anyone done this before? Can you do it?

I ask because April '09 we went on a Kids Free deal. When there, we added days to our tickets, no problem. BUT... friends of ours also there on same deal, when they went to add a day to their kids' tickets they were told nope, can't do because tickets are 'free'.

Kids' AP renewals are due at time of trip, and with Kids Free deal, taking those tickets and applying them to their renewals, sure saves a lot for us!
But, just hoping we will be able to do it?

I am wondering the same thing, except to buy new AP's as we are going back in May 2011.
