Whew. I can't believe how quickly the time has slipped by!! It was exactly ONE MONTH ago today that we boarded the Wonder! That was lightning-speed fast.
I've been elbow deep in state testing and report card grading, so my free time for the computer has been limited. However, I've carved the next thirteen minutes before Modern Family starts to update day 6 of our Kidless Cruising adventures!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Today was absolutely my favorite port day of the cruise. We opted this time not to do any port excursions and instead went back to our favorite Cabo resort, The Sirena Del Mar, for a relaxing pool day. We discovered the Sirena Del Mar last year on this same route because they were one of the only resorts that did not charge us for pool-day usage. They were very laid back and said it was all on the honor system-- if we bought food or a drink or something from their swim up bar. Not a hard sell for me!
We emailed ahead of time to ask if we could visit again and they welcomed us back enthusiastically and didn't charge us again! They even called us "family," which made us feel like royalty coming in. The
Sirena Del Mar is part of a larger timeshare network called the Welk resorts, but there is absolute no sales pressure whatsoever. Heck, just the sight of this hotel made me want to sign up and purchase!
Anyway, where was I. Oh yes. Morning of day six.
So "docking" in Cabo is unique in that there is actually no place to dock, and instead they have to drop anchor in the middle of the Sea of Cortez and "ferry" you in on tender boats. The tender boats pick you right up on the bottom level and it was only a 5 - 8 minute ride over to the port. What is really cool about the tender boats is that there were many seals swimming around which would get right up to our little boat! That was really fun for all the kids (and grownups) to see.
The Disney CMs advise you to get to the tendering area of the boat around 9:30am (actually, you have to go to the Buena Vista Theatre to pick up a tender ticket-- your place in line-- before heading down to deck one), because after that everyone going on an excursion gets priority and then the waits are long. This was the time we decided to head down and we got on a boat right away.
When we docked in Cabo, the main pier area is filled with loads and loads of locals offering to whisk you away to basically any adventure you might want to go on. Glass bottom boats to private beaches, water taxis to Lover's Beach, parasailing, ziplining, etc. Lots of opportunities to do Cabo adventures without the Disney price! Some friends of ours hired the locals to take them around and had no problem. The glass bottom boat water taxis to private beaches were only about $5 round trip I heard, so that sounded like a pretty good deal!
However, we knew our resort was about a 15 minute, $12 taxi ride away so we opted to just keep on walking to the Wyndham resort on the pier and pick up a taxi there.
Our taxi driver was really friendly and talked to us all about what Cabo was like for a taxi driver (big tips and tequila tipsiness from guests apparently!), and dropped us off in no time at the
Sirena Del Mar. Home at last.
Back of the resort:
Views from the pool:
Ocean views from the pool:
You can see the Cabo Arches and a parasailer in the back (this was another pool view)
There were two pools and two hot tubs at this hotel, and one of the pools was an incredible cliff-side infinity pool with a swim up bar. It was quiet, peaceful and the utmost relaxation. Chips and salsa + Coronas by the pool really topped off a perfect morning and afternoon!
I am always sad having to leave the
Sirena Del Mar, but DH and I keep saying, "we'll be back!"
I highly recommend perhaps opting-out of one of the Cabo excursion days and visiting this place for their pool, cruise day-pass option. Ask for Gina at the concierge desk-- she is awesome! I can't guarantee that they won't charge, but they haven't charged us the past two times. We have just made sure to order a lot of food and buy some drinks while we're there!
(Oh, and I HIGHLY recommend asking for a tour of their rooms. They are incredible!!!)
Next up: Pirate Night in the Sea of Cortez!
