Do your kiddos have mobile phones? What age did they/will they get them?

DD got one for her 13th birthday. She has been very responsible with it and I love being able to get in touch with her as needed :thumbsup2

DS was 13 and DD was 9 going-on-10. I'd originally just given DD my old pre-paid phone when I signed up for a service plan, but then I found it would be cheaper to add her to my plan. She's only allowed to use her phone in the house, and she can only take it places when she's with us.

9 here as well I upgraded and could add her for a $0 usage plan. She only pays what she uses and it's not that much. She did take it to school last year (12) as she would be walking home 3 blocks with just some other girls.

Her bill has never been over $20 and $7 of that is fees and taxes added on as soon as she uses it Nextel direct connect is very little in cost. Last year she got my camera phone as I upgraded all our phones again.

She mostly plays games on it .

My DS11 has one folded into our family plan but it's mainly only used for emergencies since he attends a different school than the others. Otherwise it stays in his backpack in his locker or at home.

DD17 got one for her 14th birthday, when she was in 9th grade. DD12 will get one this year, for her 13th birthday. She's in 7th grade.

Aside from having the convenience of being able to get in touch with them after school or while they were out socially, I also gave them (or will give them!) phones because I wanted to be able to contact them on weekends when they were at their dad's house. This has made things a lot easier for us!!!

DD7 got a Firefly for her birthday. She lost it after about a month. :furious:

My DD got one around age 12. She has been extremely responsible, and we've never had any problems out of her with it.

DS now 17 got his when he was in 6th grade (12 ish), right after 9/11 for contacting us only. When he was a Freshman we allowed him to use minutes and now he has lots of minutes and unlimited texting. We have added usage as he got older and proved being responsible with phone usage. Now DD 8 wants one  told her to see me when she was in 6th grade :teeth:

My mom got one for my brother and I to dhare (we were in mainly the same activities together) when I was eleven and my brother was thirteen. Soon after that, We each got out own cell phones. (My mom realized how handy they were. :) )

I was 11..and now 13, and STILL have that same phone.. =\

My 13 year old DS will probably get one for Christmas.
I had a real scare a few months back when he went to get his brother from the school bus and they never called me at work to say they got back in the house.... my DH was running late.
For about a half hour I was frantic, trying to call neighbors- no one home.
Turns out they were locked out, but my heart still hasn't started beating right.
I haven't gotten him a phone yet, because they are banned in middle school- but he will definitely need it next year commuting to high school.

we gave DD12 one last spring as she was in Track at her Middle School and would miss the bus. She would call when practice was over and either DW or I would pick her up. The phone/plan we opted for was the FireFly as it allows us to limit who she calls and who calls her. Only numbers I programed in are allowed right now, which is only my cell, DW's cell, home, & work.

I got my son a phone this year. He is 12 almost 13. I got it for him because he is in Jr. high now and I am not the one picking him up or taking him to school. I laid down the rules and he is very good about obeying them.

Both of my boys play several sports. It became easier to say yes to the phones when we had to keep in touch with them about practices. Both of them have a phone and have been very responsible with them.

We just got our DD11 one a while ago. It's to be use ONLY for emergencies or for me to get ahold of her or for her to check in with us. It's quite funny though because she had been begging for a phone for the longest time and once the novelty wore off, she never carries it anymore! I'm constantly reminding her to take it with her and she's always telling me that she doesn't want to take it because she won't need it. :confused3

I put my dd10 on our family plan this year. She shares her minutes with me and is very responsible with it. Her phone has GPS with it and I set our neighborhood as her boundary. If she leaves the boundary it notifies me. Also, I can look on my computer and see the location of her phone. It makes me feel a lot better when she rides her bike in our neighborhood.
