Day 2 Kev visits the best place ever – Kennedy Space Center

I love space, and science, science fiction, so the day at KSC is always brilliant for me. We were up at 7, and in POP main eatery for 7.30, kids are always early risers, and as the holiday progressed me and the wife, started to slack a little at getting up on time!

POP breakfast, is starts from 6 am, but as we found one morning, not all the food areas open at 6, some open at 7. Good choice, plenty of cakes and pastries plus the usual bacon, sausage and biscuit thing that they do.

This morning we bought 4 of the souvenir mugs for $12.49 each, and they were good for all drinks, at any time throughout the 2 weeks. A tip though, hot chocolate is great but makes the mugs smell even after washing.

So about 8.10 in he car and off to KSC. 2 things to note on the way. The 528 Bee Line Express way no longer has the automatic coin machines, so no more fun throwing 100 cents into the machine and watching it do its thing!. Secondly on the way, there was an enormous amount of surface water that was deposited by Tropical Storm Hanna, and boy did it stink. Now for some reason, Florida water does smell, but driving to KSC it was incredible.

Our Hire Car ...

We were first there and straight to the kiosk for the tickets. Through security, then straight to the new, Shuttle Launch Experience. This I had been looking forward too for such a long time.

On entrance we were told that we could not take any bags on board at all, but they provide lockers by the side, which you need a quarter for, refundable too which was nice. I loved the pre show more than that ride for some reason, but the ride was very good, so much better than Mission Space, and the exit exhibit was truly touching.

Me and my beautiful wife.

It was then onto the bus tour, to see the Saturn 5 centre, which again I think is brilliant. Pre show here is very enjoyable, I was starting to love anything that was inside with air con!. The launch countdown, I filmed and then into the main area itself. Here we eat at the Moon Rock Café; burgers etc and have a drink while sat next to the Saturn 5 itself. It’s one of the best places for a lunch.

Eventually we were back to the main area, we watched one of the Imax films, and then wandered around the Rocket Garden. About 3 pm, we were done, and then back to Orlando for the evening. We visited the Nike outlet shop on 192, and we went to Ponderosa for dinner. I was expecting more from the Ponderosa evening buffet, so I was slightly disappointed, but the steaks were good and cheap.

When we got back to our rooms, Mouse Keeping had been and left us some lovely towel animals.

Worth as mention, this was the first time I had taken my new Canon Digital SLR anywhere, telescopic lenses, and new Sony Hi Def HDD Camera. What a difference they made, so much quicker, and smaller.

I ended up with 1500 photos and over 6 hours of HD video.

Haven't been to KSC for ages and would love to try the Shuttle Launch Experience - I didn't realise it was open.

Looking forward to your next installment!

We have never been to KSC but have booked a trip there this December - my DH is really looking forward to it.

Great pics. :thumbsup2

I've not been to Kennedy Space Centre since 1994! Must go again as it is amazing. love your piccies.

Agree about digital cameras being so lightweight , would be lost without ours now.
Great photos Kev.
Have had some fun ourselves with the 'coin throwing' , and missed once or twice. :)

Kevin what a great report can really feel your enthusiasm for the place.

Can't remember reading in anyone else trip reports anyone going to the space centre on their first full day, but as you love it so much it makes sense. Actually after 8 visits we still have not been. Shame on us.

Lovely report and photos. We have been to KSC twice and on both occasions my youngest son hurt himself so a bit reluctant to go again.
