Anyone want to share their experiences with swimming, etc?

I got a keratin treatment in mid-November. It still looks good, but I'm figuring I will need another one in the spring (4 months-ish). We have a FL trip planned for the beginning of April. We are planning to do Discovery Cove and one or two days at a water park.

I have not gone swimming at all since getting the treatment and I'm just not sure how much it really affects it. If it will be really bad, it would probably be best for my budget to just wait until after the trip so I won't need it redone. But if it doesn't make any difference, it would probably be nice to have it freshly done before vacation.

I guess I could also just get a swim cap, but I've never worn one before and I don't want to look ridiculous at the parks.

Isn't it only the first few days to a week that you can't get it wet? i know my cousin does this and she won't wet it for a few days after getting it done but once that passes she is out in the pool and beach with no problem.

Edit to add: I did some research on the site my cousin showed me and saw this http://braziliankeratin.com/marcia-teixeira-keratin-treatment/company/faq/#11 311 says that you can just use some sort of leave in treatment prior to swimming and rinse your hair once you're out of the pool/ocean.

Yes. I'm not concerned about getting it wet. But you do have to use special shampoo to avoid removing the keratin.

I know chlorine and salt water will shorten the time the treatment will last, but I just don't know how much. I want to avoid needing to have it redone after a month because I was swimming for two weeks on vacation when it will last 4 months if I don't.

I added to my post with a link. That is the type of keratin my cousin uses and she pointed me to the site. Hope it helps!

I can tell you that I had it done last August before I went and it washed a lot of it out. I was in the same boat as you-get it done for vacation or wait until after. To give you a time-in-the-water estimate, we spent a 2 days in a water park (all day at DC and 1/2 day at TL) and swam for about an hour a couple of times. I won't do it again before I go to Disney because I figure my hair will be a disaster due to the heat in August anyway-and who cares because I won't see anyone I know. I would wait and do it after you get home.

From what I was told from hairdressers, you can't even use regular shampoo due to sodium and other chemicals. I imagine chlorine (as usual) would be a big NO. btw, how would a cap even help? it's not like the hair doesn't get wet with the cap on.... ???? lol

I know you shouldn't get chlorine or salt water on your hair, but I wanted to get others actual experiences about the effects of it. (The reason I even tried the keratin treatment is because there have been numerous posts here about people who get them specifically to tame the frizz they would otherwise have during a FL vacation. I would assume many of them swim while there) If everyone else said there was no noticeable difference after swimming a few times, I would be more apt to try it. Perhaps there is only an issue if you swim every day/a few times a week all summer.

As for the swim cap thing. I don't really see where it's so funny or ridiculous. There are tons of swim caps designed to keep your hair dry that people use to avoid getting wet and/or avoid the pool chemicals in their hair. :confused3

Thanks for the input.

I probably will just wait.

I used to always wear my hair up (usually in a bun) except for the rare occasions I would straighten it or something. So every past Disney trip my hair was up in a ponytail and braided when wet to keep it neat. When I got the keratin treatment, I also got my hair cut shorter (a few inches past my shoulders) and I have worn it down every single day. I can probably just do a ponytail the whole trip, but it seems so foreign to me now.

I get the keratin treatment every summer and I spend a lot of time at the beach and the pool. Of course use the correct shampoo. But what I have found helps is get your hair wet before getting in the pool or ocean. Go to the shower and totally drench your hair. This helps saturate your hair so the cholorine/salt can't be absorbed by your hair.

Even if you don't do the keratin treatment, by doing this you protect your hair from the cholorine/salt.
