Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis found in contempt, going to jail

Sad day in America to be arrested for religious beliefs,

She is not being arrested for her religious beliefs, she was arrested for being in contempt of court. If her religious convictions were so strong she would quit the job in which is is required to compromise them.

/ I applaud her standing firm in her beliefs. I think it wrong for her to be arrested.

Not really . . .

Mike Huckabee has tweeted that he is going to Kentucky to support her and to help end religious persecution.

The irony in this situation that everyone here has missed is that demand for same-sex marriage licenses in her jurisdiction has apparently been....zero.

Which is not surprising, rural Kentucky isn't on way up on the list of areas with large concentrations of gays.

So while her public evisceration is apparently providing great symbolic benefit to some, it is (at least presently) having no material impact on anyone, because no one's rights have yet been violated (and at this point never will be). That's not excusing her for being called out for not performing her job, but is making me chuckle at some here who vicariously think winning cultural wars is all about symbolic actions.
Absolutely not true.

6/26/15 - SCOTUS Ruling legalizing gay marriage. Kentucky gov. directs clerks to start issuing marriage licenses.
6/29/15 - Davis refuses to issue any marriage licenses
7/2/15 - ACLU sues Rowan County and Kim Davis on behalf of 4 couples, 2 gay and 2 straight. At least one of the couples are Rowan County citizens.

"We have been citizens of Rowan County since the beginning of our relationship and love being members of this community," Skaggs said in a statement. "So it only makes sense that we would want and should be granted our right to be recognized as a loving couple having freedom to marry here at home."

Actually, it says in the Bible that we are supposed to follow the laws of the government (well, actually it says the laws of Cesear but that's what it means) so in essence she is committing a sin by not doing what the law says. If you don't agree with a law, you work to change it but in the meantime, you follow it.

BUT, as usual in these discussions, some of you do not seem to get it. Christians are NOT perfect nor are they meant to be. They are forgiven. So stop bringing the woman's personal life into it, its not fair.

She should have been removed from her job, I agree. But judging her is a bit much.
Since she is judging other people's personal lives and making illegal decisions based on those judgements, it is certainly fair that her own personal life is scrutinized.

As I understand it, her "faith" didn't come about until after her divorces and affair. I don't think it's fair to criticize her for something that happened before she "got saved".

What religion was she previously? I think where she's from in East Nosepick Kentucky, Christianity is the norm. Especially for an elected official. I think Christianity as a whole looks askance at adultery. They got those pesky commandments......

Call me Mr. Cynic, but I think she will soon be going on the Martyr Welfare circuit and get tons of money. Heck. That pizza place was over $400k last I looked.

Maybe that was her plan all along, Mr. Cynic. Become a Martyr Welfare Queen and get the suckers to support her financially.

I guess when she took her oath she didn't have to issue marriage licenses to them. Maybe thats one of her reasons.

This is also not true. David V. Moore and his partner who live in Morehead Kentucky, which I'm pretty sure is in Rowan county were denied a marriage license by Kim Davis. Here is his very open Facebook page where he discusses the issue

https://www.facebook.com/david.v.moore.7?fref=nf
Well actually, it IS true. Davis refused to hand out ANY marriage licenses. Homosexual couples from other counties and states went to Rowan County to apply for marriage licenses.

About time. If it was really about convictions, she'd have left her post and refused to participate in issuing licenses for marriages she finds immoral... but that would have meant giving up her paycheck. You don't get to have it both ways, collect the paycheck but pick and choose what parts of the job you're willing to do.

I don't doubt that this lady converted after some events and I think that that is fine but she is trying to hard to force her beliefs on others. I wish that she would channel that stubbornness towards other things. It's a nice trait but very misguided at this point.

That would indeed be a sad day if it actually happened. But she wasn't jailed for her religious beliefs. She's free to believe I'm a martian if that is what she wants to do. She was jailed for contempt of court for failing to comply with a judge's order. And that order was for her to do her job for which she is paid quite a bit of money courtesy of the taxpayers. And not only was she not doing her job. She wasn't allowing her staff to do it either. Her appeals were denied and her stays had run their course. She lost. It's time to comply. I am given to understand the staff has now been given the same order. We'll see if they comply or go to jail.
This this this.

Religious freedom isn't at stake here.

The job did not require her to go against her religious beliefs, until the recent SCOTUS ruling.

What religion was she previously? I think where she's from in East Nosepick Kentucky, Christianity is the norm. Especially for an elected official. I think Christianity as a whole looks askance at adultery. They got those pesky commandments......
I'm guessing she was Christian in name only. But at some point she decided to be a more stringent follower of the religion.

If someone decides at 30 they want to be vegan, does that mean they are now a hypocrite because they ate meat in their 20's?
