Keeping Balcony Doors Open

Is there a way to prop your stateroom balcony door open during the night on the Wonder?

Last year my wife and I cruised on the Carnival Glory and it was possible to keep the veranda door open by using a bungee cord. It was incredibly pleasant to sleep with the door open with the sea breeze and the sounds of the ocean.

Thanks

Well, if you can deal with the whistling of the wind under the cabin door, I guess you could do it. There is a pressure difference between inside the ship the outside, and there is quite an air flow created by it.

Mmmmm ... sailed last September and if I'm remembering correctly the door was a slider ... stayed open until you closed it ... we didn't leave ours open b/c we wanted to keep the stateroom cool.

We did this last year - it wasn't noisy at all - very soothing. I forget how we kept it open - something we had with us, as we didn't pack anything special to do it with. And I wedged it so it was only a little bit open, and made it so it couldn't be opened any further - DS (17 yrs) sometimes gets up at night and I was worried he would take a wrong turn - you never stop worrying about them going overboard, no matter how old they are! :earseek:

The cabin doors to the veranda are slider....no need to prop them open.

But, we found if you sail in the summer months....keep that baby closed....it is way too humid to leave the door open. Takes forever to cool down the cabin again. During the cooler months at night it was fine, but July/August we had to keep the door closed to be comfortable...the heat and humidity was a killer.

Thanks for the info. I'll be doing our land/sea thing in less than a week, so I'm trying to make sure I've got everything packed that we'll need!

I agree with tvguy on this one. One of our cruises the kids in the next cabin (adjoining door) left their verandah door open several times and left the cabin. The whistling of the air under the connecting door was incredibly annoying. Besides, when they returned the cabin was hot and humid. I think our shared room attendant conveyed to the parents what the problem was and they finally stopped it.

We just came back from the 4/2 cruise and slept with our verandah door open every night but one. It was so great. All you hear is the waves crashing on the ship. It was so peaceful..and they are sliders so no need to prop them open. Enjoy :-)

Am looking forward to trying it. Hopefully evenings will still be comfortable for our 5/12 Cruise.

 to Realityfreakaholic! I'm in O'Fallon too.

Thanks for asking this. I love the sound of the waves at night. We are going on the cruise next week too! Maybe we'll bump into each other.

When I sailed on the Glory, I did notice a pressure difference at times. But the stateroom doors pretty much sealed the room. You could only notice the wind when you opened the cabin door into the hallway...maybe the doors on the Disney ships are different.

Wo glad that someone has asked this question - was going to myself as we never sleep with windows closed even in winter. No air conditioning here I am afraid.

Think it would be very nice to leave it open and hear the sea and hope that october will be good for that.

Howdy Neighbor

What a small world. We just moved to O'fallon from NY last year. I love it here. It's such a nice town with plenty for my kids to do. Loving this weather too. :-)

Realityfreakaholic, wonder how close of neighbors we are? Will send you a PM

Just one other caution about leaving the door open ~

I remember reading someone's trip report and they kept their sliding door open one night only to be awakened by drops of condensation falling from their ceiling. I don't remember what month they sailed, but they definitely had a moisture problem the next day.

Granted, we've sailed in February and March, when the weather was cooler, but I think the only time we were in the cabin and had the verandah door closed was the day at sea when it rained. Other than that, it was wide open with that fresh breeze blowing in. Very nice.

The biggest problem we had the first cruise was getting the dang thing open. I swear we stood there for ten minutes pulling and twisting and tugging and pushing. We've got about 15 years of higher education between us, and we looked like absolute doofuses. Doofii? Finally our stateroom attendant came in and showed us how to do it.

OH wow, never even thought about what might happen at night! M little "ferrets" will be seven and five--can they actually get OVER the rails???? Virgin cruiser here...I was going to leave the door open at night....

I personally think DCL does a great job of kid-proofing the ship, with enough plexiglass to pave the state of Delaware. That said, (and anybody who has kids can back me up on this one) it's always possible that the kids can get someplace they're not supposed to be. The railings on the verandahs are high (waist high on a tall adult), but there are chairs and a little table out there. And some kids can be little monkeys at times.

It's much like anything else, in that it can't ever be completely safe, but I think Disney does as good a job as anybody trying to get it to be as safe as it possibly can, without turning the whole ship into a giant gerbil habit-trail.
