Keeping an eye on Tropical Weather 2024

The local news gave us the 2:00pm update. The winds are at 110 MPH. Category 3 starts at 111 MPH winds. It should definitely be a Cat 3 for the 5:00pm update.
Didn’t take long to go from 3 to Cat 4, which I think was around 6:30pm.

Pretty sure the eye has hit land 11pm. Horrible for that area. The better news is not highly populated. Alot of power outages up and down Florida. They’re closing in on about 1 million out of 11 million customers (likely by midnight).

We’re in South Carolina near the GA border and it’s passing us now and so much wind!!!
Supposed to fly to Orlando today via Augusta and Charlotte but both flights already delayed so I think we may end up driving once it’s safe..

Be safe! I'm all the way up in KY, and they've cancelled school today because of the potential for tornados, flash floods, and extremely high winds. Woke up heartsick for everyone down in FL.

Any updates on road conditions on 95 and around Orlando?
Any issues with power outages?
We’re hoping to make it to the Boardwalk tonight…

No issues in the general area. We are 2 miles from the castle and it's a beautiful morning here. Overall we got about 1.25" of rain from the storm and the top wind speeds were not that bad.

This is a power outage map showing current outages near Orlando. I have not heard of any major issues on 95.

Our pine trees swayed, my neighbor lost part of his privacy fence, my home with a new roof and additional ridge/off-ridge vents howled. We didn't lose power and still felt the strongest winds living in central Florida for 20 years.
I also has a lot of heavy wind, but not as much rain as I expected. I didn’t lose power but the lines in our area are underground. I have some tree debris to clean up this weekend.

Not to alarm anyone, but the websites I monitor for tropical activity are showing another storm forming where Helene did and heading to the Gulf coast next weekend. Still early days for a firm track or anything . . . Just a reminder that we aren’t out of the woods yet.

Well ****

Our cruise is next weekend and we fly out on Thursday
I wouldn’t panic yet. This is showing as a Sat/Sun event right now, and since it hasn’t actually formed yet, it very likely will be a little later. You might get your cruise extended though, or sent to alternative stops. Just keep your eyes and ears open and maybe pack an extra outfit or two.

You’re right. Honestly, my vacation is such a trivial thing to worry about when there are people’s lives and property at stake. It’s vacation and I have insurance. We can be flexible.

Update - we couldn’t get out of SC yesterday. Our area was hit HARD. Still without power but we got flights today and just landed in MCO. Glad we could salvage trip and it kind of worked out with the timing to leave town since we could be out of power for days or weeks! Excited for air conditioning!!

That was us after Irma. I already had a ten day stay booked that started the day after Irma hit, and some of the travel party were evacuees who couldn’t go home for a week. So we made the best of it.

I changed the title again as we keep our eye on the Caribbean watching what could be either Kirk or Leslie.
Curious why it’s possibly two different names. Is that because there is another storm brewing elsewhere that could also be one of those two based on whichever happens first? I am watching this because we travel to MCO Thursday.

There are a couple storms brewing. Depends which turns into a named storm first.

There are a couple of fish storms in the Atlantic, but the projection for the Gulf development is being targeted as a tropical rain maker with associated winds (50% development as of this timestamp). The local news stated it would be a CAT 1 at most. IIRC, Helena was a 40% development projection with it possibly being a CAT 1 or low-level CAT 2 at most.

After 20 years living here in central Florida, I have for the past decade bump the intensity level by a factor of 2. Unfortunately, more often than not, it seems to be the case.

So do you reckon it will be come a hurricane as well?

If I had to make a guess at this time, I think there is a >50% possibility it will. The Gulf waters are incredibly warm and, even though not directly related, this week central Florida is going to see near record high temperatures. It feels like mid-August this AM while it being the last day in September.
