Keep Calm and Go to Disney! 10/21 - 11/4/14 COMPLETE

Hi Barb, I have been away from the boards for a while (no trip planned so needed to think about something else ) but have just spent a very enjoyable evening catching up on your adventures :surfweb:

Thanks for your reviews - that safari dinner looked incredible!

Hope you are keeping well xx

Loving the reviews so far!

It was awesome to read about your safari experience!! I've never even heard of it before. I think that's something to put on my Disney bucket list, for sure. Thanks for sharing.

Ahh, wilderness lodge. Home sweet home ; )

Your meal at The Plaza looked great. I hear so many mixed reviews I've yet to venture there, but your sandwich looks relish. And what great luck to have an unexpected dismeet.

I'm here, joining in late. Looks like you have a great line-up of restaurants. Can't wait to read more!

Thanks for joining in! :goodvibes

Jumping in here to follow along with your fantastic dining reviews. Can't wait to read more! :)

Welcome to the party! :)

I'm late to the party but joining in anyway! Your report is getting me amped up for our upcoming trip! I was thinking of a TR instead of a dining report but now I may change to the dining review instead. See what power you have?

You're not late at all. Thanks for joining! And I vote for a dining review with some non-dining bonus material. :thumbsup2

Ohhhhhhh.... Can't wait!!! We are doing our very first, hopefully, in the fall!!

Your first trip...how exciting!!! Happy Planning!! :woohoo:

Even during the construction, the Wilderness Lodge was a nice place to stay. We're heading back there later this month.

There is a special treat which is only offered during MNSSHP, besides tons of Halloween candy? I can't wait to hear about this one. :)

Oh, I am very jealous Sue. I love the Wilderness Lodge. I won't be going back to WDW until May and probably won't be staying there. :sad2:

Great review of the Plaza. I have never been to it but would love to try on a future trip. Can't wait to hear about your special treat at MNSSHP :)

My first visit to the Plaza was back in 2006 and I wasn't impressed at all. But between Brenda's and Paula's great reviews, I was convinced to give it another try. While it's still not my favorite at MK and not a must do every trip for me, it is solidly good. :thumbsup2

Hi Jeanette! So glad you decided to stop by. Hope to hear more from you. :goodvibes

I stumbled on the safari info just a few weeks prior to leaving on my trip and I am soooo glad I did. Glad you enjoyed my review and hope you give it a try someday. :thumbsup2

Your meal at The Plaza looked great. I hear so many mixed reviews I've yet to venture there, but your sandwich looks relish. And what great luck to have an unexpected dismeet.

Yes, I've been posting my food photos from the Wilderness Lodge for the last few weeks on my Instagram account so I've been really, really missing it. :sad1:

I love that club sandwich and fries from the Plaza, you're making me so hungry Barb!

Hi Rachel! If I don't make you hungry then I'm not doing my job very well.

I finished up at the Plaza and had more than an hour to kill before the start of the party at 7:00 p.m. I had gotten my wristband already when I entered the park earlier and had looked over the brochure with the party schedule of events during my dinner.

My only priorities for the party were to see the parade (maybe twice, if it was good), the fireworks, and try the special Halloween party treat that I mentioned earlier. Oh, and there was one more thing...I wanted to have my photo taken with a certain character who pretty much embodies the Halloween theme. I had heard that the lines for this character were extremely long from start to finish of the party, so with nothing better to do I decided to check and see if there was a line forming yet for him at the front of the park, next to City Hall. At around 5:45 (more than 1 hour before the party was to start) there was a line beginning to form, but it wasn't a very long one. I debated about whether I should jump in line or not, and decided to go ahead and bite the bullet. About 5 minutes later a CM came out and announced that these characters would be coming out early tonight and she then started checking everyone in line to make sure they were wearing a MNSSHP wristband. Then at 6:00 out came both Jack Skellington and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas and according to the time on my photo, I had attained one of my party goals by 6:20...40 minutes before the official start of the party, Not bad for a party rookie! :thumbsup2

With extra time on my hands now, I decided to add one more character meet and greet to my schedule. I had heard that the Winnie the Pooh characters appeared in really cute Halloween costumes during the party so off I went to Fantasyland to check if there was a line forming yet. I spoke to a very nice CM by the Winnie the Pooh ride and was told that the Pooh characters would not come out until 7:30. She showed me where I could sit for the 45 minute wait, if I wanted to be first in line to see them and that is what I decided to do.

So by 7:35 my second goal was accomplished and it was time to find my spot in Frontierland to watch the first parade, which would start from there at 8:15. However, the wonderful smell coming from the popcorn cart drew me to it as I was walking through Liberty Square. And here is where I admit a shocking fact about me. I had never before tried the popcorn at Disney World! It has been on my Must Try list for years now, but somehow I just never got around to it. But I finally managed to mark this off my list...

And it was good...lots of salt and butter. Much like the popcorn I had last night at our local movie theater. However, there is something about eating popcorn while watching a parade, fireworks, etc. at Disney World that makes it taste special. :goodvibes

I then had to walk quite far down the parade route through Frontierland before I finally found an open spot on the curb. It wasn't long then until the start of the parade that is now my all-time favorite Disney parade...

I think I took about a thousand pics of this wonderful parade, but I won't subject you to them all...just a few. ;)

Disney Royalty - Donald & Daisy, Minnie & Mickey

The Ballroom Dancers from the Haunted Mansion came to life...

The Haunted Mansion float, my favorite of the parade...

And no Disney Halloween parade could be complete without the villains...

All this combined with an unforgettable song (yes, it's running through my head even now ;)) from "The Night Before Christmas" movie...

"This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!"

...had me thoroughly convinced that this was in fact Halloween, even though it was actually only October 23rd.

After the parade finished up in Frontierland, I cut through the path that comes out by the Crystal Palace and Casey's and watched the end of the parade again as it went down Main Street. Then it was time to find a spot to watch the fireworks. I decided to stay right there in front of Casey's, as the view of the castle seemed pretty good. The wait didn't seem too long before the Celebrate the Magic light show began at 9:15 and then the start of HalloWishes at 9:30. Again I took about a thousand photos of the fireworks, but I'll just post a few...

After the fireworks, I had just enough time to get my special treat (available only during the Halloween Party) from Liberty Square's Sleepy Hollow...

Spiced Pumpkin Waffle Sundae

I didn't regret my decision to skip dessert at the Plaza. This was seriously good!! :thumbsup2

Here is the list of all the specialty treats which were available only during MNSSHP...

After my snack I found a spot on Main Street to watch the parade again...and it was even better the second time around. I had originally planned to leave after the parade, but apparently most of the other party guests who watched the parade on Main Street had the same idea because there was a mass exodus. So I decided to head in the opposite direction of the herd and found myself in Fantasyland. This is when I noticed that the line to see the seven dwarfs was relatively short. Therefore, even though seeing them had not been on my list of party goals, I decided to go for it...

And with that it was time to call it a night. The clock had struck 12 and much to my surprise I had made it to the end of the party.

ETA: As I was making my way out of Fantasyland, I passed by Pinocchio's. This was one of the trick-or-treat locations and I thought I remembered reading somewhere that they gave out Werther's caramels here. Since there was not much of a line and I love Werther's candy, I decided to check it out. So here is a photo of my entire haul of candy for the evening...

Sadly, there was not a single piece of Werther's caramel candy.

Next up: Breakfast at Whispering Canyon

While I've been to Disney several times we've never done MNSSHP before and I was so excited to read for this!!

What a productive MNSSHP! Your meet and greets are great. We went in 2013 and I wish I'd been on the DIS then because I think I would have been more prepared. We didn't meet any characters or have any special treats. But we did get to see the parade, fireworks and do some trick or treating so I'm definitely not complaining.

The Halloween Party seems like so much fun. I love the pic with Jack and Sally. I was fortunate to meet them back in Oct 13 at DL with a very small line near the HM. I normally don't run up to characters but I could not pass up that chance. The waffle looks and sounds amazing. We are going to the party this year for the first time and cannot wait :goodvibes

We watched the parade from Fronterland, cut through Adventure Land and then found the front of the parade again by the firehouse. We were able to see the gravediggers again and in a much better light. The lighting wasn't very good at Fronterland.

You were smart to get in those character's lines early. We never did get a chance to do that since the lines were too long by then..

You were smart to get in line early for the character M&Gs! That waffle looks tasty! I'm totally singing the parade song in my head....the gravediggers are my favorite part of the Party!

Been lurking a little, but I had to comment about MNSSHP. :) It's so much fun and it looks like you had a great time. We last went in '13 with our two kids and I think we'll get to go again in '16. That pumpkin waffle sundae was soooo good. I was lucky enough to be able to get one on our way out of the park at the end of the evening. Yes, we totally kept our 2 and 4 year olds out until about 1 that night, but I'm pretty sure they had just as much fun as we did. Looking foward to more reviews!

Mare1203 and I went to the MNSSHP (1st for me too!) in September. I had seen the parade when the DisUnplugged had shown it last year. So when she surprised me with tickets for our girls Bridal Showcase weekend, I was super excited! We decided to go trick or treating and ride some rides while people were watching the first parade, and we'd watch the 2nd parade. This ended up being a bad decision because it decided to start pouring down rain about 15 minutes after the parade was set to start so they had cancelled it :( I was so upset. BUT I WILL see it this year in October when I'm there for my wedding!

MNSSHP is one of our most favorite things to attend while at WDW. However, we were unable to attend last year so your photos made me feel like I was able to attend. The parade and Hallowishes are my families most favorite of all. And now the songs are running through my head!!!! Thanks. ;) Who am I kidding, we have a CD and play it in the car all the time.

You got some really great photo ops too. I will definitely have to put the seven dwarfs on my goal list.

So glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for reading! If you ever have the opportunity to attend the party, I would highly recommend it. :thumbsup2

Oh, I forgot to mention anything about the trick or treating I did in my review. I need to go back and add that. Thanks for the reminder! :)

Barb, it looks like you had a wonderful time at MNSSHP :-)

It was fun, wish you could have been there with me Linda. :goodvibes

It will be so fun to see Alexander's reactions to the many sights and sounds of the party. I bet he will love it! :thumbsup2

Oh, that was a good idea regarding the parade Sue. I'll have to remember that next time.

I love sleepy hollow! ::yes:: that seasonal dessert looks very good!

I too am a fan of Sleepy Hollow. I need to get back there sometime for another Fruit & Nutella waffle. It's been way too long. ;)

Hi Kathy! :wave2: Oh no, how sad that you missed out on the parade. :sad2: But how exciting that you are getting married at Disney World. :bride: Congrats to you and Jeff! :goodvibes

Just came across your report today and am enjoying it! Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you found me. Thanks for reading! :)

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."

Why the quote from "A Tale of Two Cities"? Because it accurately describes my three meals from this day. So which was one(s) of the best of my trip, and which were among the worst? :scratchin For a partial answer to this question, read my first installment of...

"A Tale of Three Meals"

Not knowing if I'd wake up in time to have breakfast the morning after attending the MNSSHP, I hadn't made any plans. But by 6:30 a.m. I was wide awake and for some reason I was very hungry. :confused3 I debated between getting my favorite Mickey waffles from Roaring Fork...

Bananas Foster Mickey Waffles

...or having breakfast at Whispering Canyon Cafe. I had had the same dilemma during my last stay at Wilderness Lodge in April and had chosen the waffles, so this time I went with...

I made it downstairs shortly after the restaurant opened at 7:30. There was only one other family seated in the dining room.

I looked over the menu to see if there were any changes since I last had breakfast there in Dec. 2013.

And speaking of my last visit, that time I made a pretty good choice when I had the...

House-made Banana Bread French Toast with Bananas Foster Sauce

Can you tell I'm a big fan of Bananas Foster? ;)

Anyway, I considered having this again, but decided I wanted something that would be both sweet and savory...

All-You-Care-To-Enjoy Breakfast Skillet with Scrambled Eggs, Western Home Fries, Bacon, Sausage, a Mickey Waffle, a Buttermilk Biscuit & Sausage Gravy

Where do I begin? I guess I'll be nice and begin with the best, which was hands down the Mickey waffle...

This was warm and tasted like it was fresh out of the waffle iron. Somehow it seemed better than the Mickey waffle I had had the morning before from the Boma breakfast buffet. However, this may have been because it was the one and only shining star among a mini-buffet of mediocrity. Let's start with the breakfast meats. They were ordinary, totally unremarkable except that I was given only one slice of bacon and one sausage link. I remember thinking this was rather odd but after tasting them I decided that one was enough. The remaining three items on the platter were not good. Though the potatoes looked really good, they were barely warm and pretty flavorless. The biscuit was also not hot and tasted liked it had been leftover from the day before and reheated. The sausage gravy was very thin and flavorless so it was of no help to the biscuit. And last were the scrambled eggs which were extremely runny. You can probably see from the photo that they were sitting in a pool of uncooked egg mixture. Now some people like their eggs this way, but I am not one of those people. :p

So the "All-You-Care-To-Enjoy" Breakfast Skillet was for me a failure. I had no desire to get seconds since I had barely touched the first round of food, with the exception of the Mickey waffle. However, this turned out to be a good thing because lunch ended up being a 4-course meal. :upsidedow

Next up: French Regional Lunch at Monsieur Paul

We ended up having breakfast at WCC twice during our October trip. In fact, we had breakfast there the day before you did, but around 10:30am. I have to agree with you about the potatoes. They are really tasteless. Some nice traditional hash browns would be much better. But my scrambled eggs were really good - creamy and cooked properly - not runny. I liked the bacon but not the sausage. The Mickey waffle was very good. I've also ordered a gluten-free Mickey waffle from WCC and that was very good, too. :)

Our daughter and DSIL ordered the breakfast platter and they loved the sausage, ordering more than one refill. I was not a big fan of it, though.
