Katrina Looting - a true story

A friend of mine has a condo close to the convention center in New Orleans.

Her place got broken into and a few things were taken - but the looters were using it as a staging area, and she came home to find lots of DVDs, CDs, and other electronics.

We thought it was funny that she had a net gain from the looters (she didn't keep the stuff though).

The only other good thing is that since they were using her condo, they did not defecate and urinate on the floors like they did in the other units and some of the shops.

Wow! I have an old friend who's condo was in the French Quarter. He hasn't returned yet--he evacuated 1300 miles away to stay with friends--and he thinks it's probably been looted and trashed. His girlfriend's place was in an area that was flooded. They aren't sure they'll ever go back. He was one of the house pianists at Pat O'Brien's Piano Bar. One more piece of the NOLA music scene down the tubes

You never know - it's almost sort of random who did and did not get looted. My friend was in the Warehouse District. And like my friend - not all who got looted got trashed.

My other friend with a small natural food store in a not so great area just assumed that she had been looted. And to tell the truth she didn't even mind if people took the food and water - she was just hoping that they didn't trash it. No one touched it at all.

I think Pat O'Brien's just reopened. It will be sad if they don't return. I just finished a trip report on another thread. It's awful but there's still a lot that is going to be okay pretty soon.
