That isn't always the parents fault, as a child I wouldn't wear gloves I hated the feel of them.

I know exactly what you mean, I saw a sibling in the playgroung the other in what I can only describe as wearing boarding shorts and socks with Crocs! Grrrrr...

It seems to me that although an aggresive character, she [karen] prayed on Michael Donovan and took advantage of his other weaknesses and insecurities in order to pursuade him to do it.......

I'm not sure about Micheal Donovan, he seems like a dangerous guy if he is past is correct.

Slightly OT I know but I must admit Paula, I've had this exact problem with my eldest DD5 and about ten pairs of gloves later we now know they have to be fleece and not wool or cotton - as a parent, that's what I do.....

What does everybody think of this case?
I think its shocking, especially when I saw the computer reconstruction of the flat where she was held for 24 days and pretty much kept on a lead like a dog to only access certain rooms.
Also, the fact her mother had been drugging her over a long period of time to keep her subdued.

I don't even understand how the idea of drugging your child to keep them quiet during the summer and winter school hols would occur to you in the first place. It's beyond me.

BTW I hate the fact she's called Karen - it's giving the rest of us Kaz-types a bad name.

My eldest suffers greatly with her ENT, since an infant she has had more anti-biotics that I care to think about. I got to the stage where I hunted down homopathic remedies (from a fantastic local chemist) and treated it myself along with an over the counter anti-inflamatory for children (Nurofen for children). My SIL told me about another breathing/pain relief remedy for children called Medised, I had never heard of it. I gave it to DD one night when she had a heavy cold and I knew an ear infection would follow, and by golly SIL was right it knocked out my DD and she slept right through the night which, at the time I thought was a god send. If only I had known the night before when I gave it to her what it was going to do to DD's mood the next day - she was unbearable for about 48hours after, I put it down to that particular product. It just seemed too strong for her, I have never given it to my girls since.
My point is, surely Shannon could have suffered the side effects of the cocktail of drugs she had been given, this in turn could have made her a more eratic, unstable child that was difficult to parent.
So sad.

Possibly but I doubt it. The combi of drugs would've made her docile, passive and compliant - IMO it's unlikely she ever stopped taking them...

I think the problem here is that Karen Matthews is undoubtedly a forceful character and probably quite convincing. Plus Social Services are inevitably over-worked and under-funded - TBH if they can drop a case, they will. They failed but fortunately not in the same league as Baby P...
