He had cheat grass/a fox tail in his ear. The vet couldnt get it out, so we had to leave him to be sedated. He's old so I ask the vet about safety... he gave him a shot in front of me and said that the tranq would be ready in 30 minutes, and hopefully thats all he'll need. If not, he'll have to totally sedate him. That was three hours ago... so I just called to see how it went, and they havent even done it yet! I understand that things come up and whatnot, but why is it that story always changes when you're not standing there? It was explained that the tranq shot is safest etc. Now, they close in an hour and havent even attended to him. I am trying to be understanding, but I guess I'm PO'd. Also our appointment was at 11:40 and we were there 5 minutes early, but they still took a walk-in before us to remove some stitches. We got in 35 minutes later. Maybe I'm just worried about my dog and its making me grumpy.

Awww I'm sorry. I sympathize and would be po'd too. I hope its done and he can come home soon.

He will probably be fine - but I can understand why you aren't happy. It's possible that someone came in with an emergency and so they had to deal with that before helping your dog. I'd be annoyed about the walk-in as well; that certainly wasn't an emergency! Hopefully you'll be able to go get your dog soon.

I also have an older dog and I'm always very concerned about anethesia. My vet prefers not to put her under unless absolutely necessary, but when he has had to he uses a mask to administer some gas. Apparently it leaves her system more quickly than anything that they could inject. If there's a problem they can just remove the mask. He feels that is safer for her than the other options, but it might not be a good option for every dog - and I know it isn't an option for every procedure. If you are concerned about that sort of thing, it might be worth talking to your vet about it. And if the vet doesn't seem to take you concerns seriously, I would probably be asking for recommendations from my friends for another vet to go to.

oooh, as the parent of a 14 yr old keeshond, I would not want to hear what you did. Emergency or not, I feel once the procedure was started, it should have been finished. I am a big believer in communication...especially when it comes to our pets...its not like they can complain.

I hope they take care of your baby soon, and he gets back home to you!!

Just called again. They are acting like I'm being unreasonable!! they STILL havent done anything and this time the dumb woman asked me if he was A CAT!!!!! When I told her I didnt think she knew what she was talking about and I wanted to speak to a nurse, she siad NO. She could take a message. OK, my threshold for understanding is wearing thin.... I'm sending hubby down there to see WTH is going on. I'm imagining all kinds of things now. I know we'll have to find a new vet after this. I'm sure my husband will bring him home half sedated with a sticker still in his ear  I'm sure he is or will be OK, but they are acting so stupid that I am worried.

That's ridiculous! You absolutely should find a new vet. I hope your dog is home soon. Maybe the person you talked to is just confused and they really already did the procedure. (Hopefully!) Keep us posted!

Isnt it sad?? Someone should know what is happening. I dont want to make you upset, Im sure your guy is in good hands, you are just dealing with a few nitwits.

I would get a new vet. I have been through 5 vets in the past 5 years. I have a low tolerance for this kind of stuff. Keep us posted...

You know what, TeaCups.... I'd go flipping get him.

I'd be mad as hell, if I were you. I know there have been previous responses about emergencies coming up, etc - but then they should advise you of this, the several times you have called. I'd be ticked.

The first vet we brought Charley to, was very distant, very unlikeable and the first thing he asked when he came in the room was "Does he bite?" He's a dog, he might bite - he hasn't bit - but what a strange way to start our introduction to him. He didn't look in his ears (he actually had a yeast infection in his ear, which we ended up needing those drop things just a few days later)

We found another one. A woman who gets down on the floor and exams our dog, like she should.

I'd be mad, TeaCups.

He's back home with us. He's looped off his keester and still has the stupid fox tail in his ear. TOTAL MORONS!!! He's not knocked out... but deffo walking wobly and has major droopy eyes. Poor old guy. He's too old for stupid doctors! I am so pissed I could blow a cork! I called the emergency clinic and they said to just wait till tomorrow so the meds would wear off.

The vet should refund your money for wasting your time. So your poor dog has to suffer because of those idiots. You have a right to be mad!!! Good luck tomorrow.

Is it imbedded in his ear? No shot at you being able to remove it gently, is there? I feel so bad for the poor dog.

9 PM: The vet himself just called me. He started off acting like I had something wrong and tried to talk over me and bully me. Then when that didnt work he started cussing (not at me, just in general) , I assume to intimidate me. Well my family can tell you I am most comfortable in a good old cussing match, so that pretty much bombed too and he got a bit of an earful himself. Then he was all sorry and agreeing with my points. In the end I explained to him that his receptionists not giving messages to him today (his claim) lost him a customer who owns A LOT of pets. I actually think it sunk in his head finally. He offered to treat him tomorrow, I told him no thank you. While the call was decent of him (I guess) it made me mad all over again. I feel good that I made my point loud and clear and kept my cool and didnt show my ugly side:rotfl2: too much.

We had taken one of our pups to the vet for a biopsy on a Thursday and were told she would be in the office with the results the following Monday. I called on Monday and she wasn't there at the time, she would be available on Tuesday morning. Tuesday morning she was in surgery, please call later. Tuesday afternoon she was in a different office please call Wednesday morning. Wednesday she was not in for the day. By Thursday I had about had it. When I called and was somewhat upset I was told that, after all, they had other patients. I didn't dare say anything more.

DH took over the communications. He doesn't fool around. We finally got the test results on Friday from another vet in the practice. Peanut had a mast cell tumor in the upper part of her right hind leg. DH let the vet know how we felt about the communication in no uncertain terms. We refused to see that particular doctor ever again., and received much better service afterwards.

What a loser!! Good for you. Take him somewhere else. Tell them what happened, they should treat you and your puppy extra special.

Maybe we should shove foxtail in that vets ear, drug him and let him wake up with it still in there. Better yet, maybe we should shove it somewhere else...:wizard:

How's your dog today? Has he gone to a new vet to get it removed. The poor thing.

I liek the way you think! ;)

He's doing OK. Not great, but OK. He has an appointment pretty soon here, so by tonight or tomorrow he'll be feeling like a 10 year old pup again :) He's been following us around. I know what he's saying "Please, someone, get this thing fixed!" Poor old guy. He's getting lots of extra attention. The kids have both brought out a blanket and pillow and have made themselves beds on each side of his dog bed! He ate a good breakfast so that's a good sign. I almost think the drugs that guy gave him made him hungry. He's not a big eater, but since we brought him home he's acted half starved. I gave him a slice of roast beef last night :rolleyes1 and thought he was going to take my hand with it! He never does that. He was so sorry afterwards, too LOL! He gave me those big ol' puppy dog near-tear eyes when he realized i jerked my hand away. :) He was loaded a like a meth junkie so it was understandable.

Ahhh.... it's finally over and that blasted foxtail is out! This new vet was good. He gave him a gas that only lasted while it was on, and then as soon as they turned it off he was back to normal. We were in and out and back to feeling better within 30 minutes. So much better than yesterday!!
What a relief

That's wonderful! I'm glad he's doing better - and that you found a better vet. :)
