My head is spinning and my gut has a giant pit in it. My DS16 just suddenly developed something called a Spontaneous Pneumothorax yesterday. Essentially, it's a hole in his lung that is letting air out into his chest cavity and it's putting pressure on his lung so that it's hard for him to breathe. (He's a swimmer and the doc thinks it may have happened after his coach had all the kids go down to the bottom of the diving well to pose for an underwater pic.) So we are in for a series of doctors appts. & chest xrays every couple of days to watch this thing - it will hopefully close up & heal on its own within a week or two - BUT in the meantime HE IS NOT ALLOWED TO FLY anytime soon!! So, after months & months of saving & planning & booking activities & such it ain't gonna happen this year.

Since we were orig. scheduled to leave on Aug. 3rd I called DVC this afternoon to check out our options. I figured no flying didn't mean no DRIVING to FL. I was able to find a 1-bedroom available at SSR for 9 nights beginning on Aug. 10th so I cancelled our 4 nights in studios at VGC and our 7 nights at Aulani and we'll only loose 6 points (we have a Dec UY so we would have had to use all of them by Nov. 30th). I haven't called Starwood yet to see what the deal is with our reservation on Maui that we booked with Starwood points. That's probably a loss. And the rental car on Oahu that I booked thru Priceline is a loss. Not sure about our Pearl Harbor ressie - that's probably also a loss. I think I can cancel the surf lessons w/o a penalty tho. And now we have 4 days of DL park hoppers to get rid of and we'll have to buy WDW AP's ($$$) when we get there. But I didn't want to WASTE 313 points and driving seems to be the only option!! Sigh.

Then I called the airlines. Alaska Air was GREAT. I love them and haven't even flown with them yet. They gave me no trouble cancelling and for only a $100 pp fee we have until next August to travel on them. We had the bulk of our flights booked on them which is lucky and hopefully we can try to rebook this trip for NEXT summer. Delta, not so much luck. We had them booked for our flight from LA to HNL. They're giving me a credit to rebook AND TRAVEL BY January 27th of next year (1 yr. from purchase - not likely we can tho unless we can slip in a quickie trip sometime). Hawaiian Air wants me to fax a note from the pulmonologist and then they will likely give me a refund (whew).

I was glad that there was SOMETHING available at WDW tho - but I would've liked to have pushed it back just a little further to be on the safe side for traveling - but I ran into no availability at all on Aug 19 & 20 - so everybody just please cross your fingers that this pneumothorax thing heals enough over the next week or so that he is OK to travel by the 10th. I just really, really don't want to have to go thru this vacation cancellation business again. I am afraid to get too excited for anything at this point. It has been an exhausting couple of days and I just felt the need to vent.

So sorry, glad you are able to get some of your money back and that you still can take a trip. Hope your son heals on his own. How scary.

I'm sorry!! I've been so excited for you, reading all your posts along the way. I'm glad you have a trip still though!

And I'll cross my fingers that your son is recovered enough to leave by then:)

Terrible news. So sorry. I take it that you did not have trip insurance? Did you buy the DVC insurance because you could be recovering some of those losses on flights (not sure about other losses). Here's hoping that all comes together for Aug. 19 and 20 and that your Florida trip is extra, extra fun.

I am in shock LeeAnn. Poor thing. I am so sorry to hear this. I hope he has a fast recovery. On a happy note... WE WILL BE AT DISNEY WHEN YOU ARE!!!!

Thanks everyone.

NO, I didn't buy trip insurance - but will next time I guess. I did when we went to Europe a couple of years ago - that was a HUGE chunk of cash, so that's why. I guess I wasn't thinking beyond the points this time. Didn't think the DVC insurance was worth the expense. But I will definitely insure the flights next time around!!

So sorry to hear. I will keep your son in my thoughts for a very quick recovery. I hope you all have a wonderful vacation at WDW!

So sorry to hear about your change of plans. I hope your son recovers quickly.

I have to admit I was looking forward to reading your opinions about Aulani. I know you put a lot of research into learning all about Aulani. Do you think you'll plan another trip to see Aulani?

Yikes - sorry to hear about your son's issue. Hopefully he's on the mend!

While it's frustrating to miss out on flights (we're in the process of re-booking ours with fees and higher fares), I think your WDW idea is really smart. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Make sure he's careful! :)

Oh no! I hope that your son recovers soon! My DD is a swimmer and she just told me that she touched the bottom of the University of Wisconsin's pool (17 feet!) last week. She's a scuba diver so she said she equalized on the way down. I didn't think anything of it last week but it's kinda freaking me out in retrospect.

You should be able to get your SPG points back without an issue. I would also call Priceline about the car. They are more flexible than most people think. I'm so glad that you found something in WDW!

Thanks - yes, we will probably try to go NEXT summer now since Alaska Air is giving us a year from now to rebook and that's worth $2K in airfare...but we may have to scale back on the number of days since this year we had some banked points to use too - so it was easy to plan for the 11 nights. Will have to look at it that the resort construction will be done & over and the cabanas will be back by next summer!!:rolleyes2

While we were looking forward to seeing Carsland in DL on the plus side for WDW we'll get to see the new Fantasyland, although we were hoping to go next year to see the mine train....

We don't dive but were pretty sure that we were going to try snuba in HI. Perhaps this problem happened here & now rather than while we were on vacation?! It would've sucked to be caught in Hawaii when it happened and him not be allowed to fly home for several weeks!! Apparently from what I've read online & what they said at the ER this condition is prone to happen to "tall skinny young white boys". :rotfl: Not sure WHY. But that's the profile of who this happens to (my DS is 16, 5' 10" and only 113 Lbs.)!! Kinda odd profile, huh?

I haven't called Starwood yet. I made so many OTHER phone calls this afternoon after we got home I just fizzled out on it. The points we used actually originated as Amex. Reward points that we converted...so it would be nice not to lose them - but AFTER we booked they changed the rules about how many points are required - so it's doubtful we'd have enough to use them even if we did get them back. I'll deal with that phone call over the weekend sometime.

You know....I didn't get trip insurance for this house we rented either. However.... I am adding it tonight!!!

:thumbsup2 Good idea!!

Sorry to hear about that. :(

Regarding the Disneyland tickets, just a reminder that DL passes have expiration dates. Don't wait too long to check into your options there. I believe all tickets being sold right now expire on 12/31/13.

Glad you were able to make (a little) lemonade from the lemons.

So sorry to hear that your trip has been cancelled. Praying for a speedy recovery for your son.

I have been following your postings as you have planned your Aulani trip---our family has plans for 9 days at Aulani in October and your posts have been very helpful.

I often debate travel insurance. Just bought our's for our October trip today. Now that I have read your post, I am glad I did.

Hopefully, all the construction will be completed and the "kinks" worked out, so that when you do visit Aulani it will be a truely magical vacation. pixiedust:

as a doctor -- often times with a doctor note you can get out of many of those fees since it is a medical condition that caused the problem. sometimes it doesn't hurt to call and ask them if you can. and I'm sure his doctor would be fine to give a letter stating that it isn't safe medically for him to travel.

OMG so sorry to hear about your son and yes thank God you found this out now be going to HI ..... just try to not over think things and just do one thing at a time so you don't let yourself go crazy as mom's we do that a lot more then we need to and it all works out in the end....

I had a collapsing lung my senior year in high school a few years back, and I had to sit out of basketball for about three weeks. We monitored it, and they wouldn't let me do much of anything but go to school. It did gradually rise back up on its own without any surgery of any kind such as a tube they mentioned, so it wasn't too bad. I hear it is more common with tall thinner people.

Oh no!!! I am sooooo sorry to read about your son. What a shock. We were at Aulani last week and I took close up pics of the cabanas so that you could see how it's going there now. I totally thought of you while we were there!

Hope your son heals pronto without further incident. Enjoy DW, I know you wanted Hawaii but I truly suspect you will enjoy Aulani more next summer.

Yes, that is exactly who gets these. Isn't that funny? So weird. Who knew?! Sounds like you were given the same advice we were. Just sit around & do nothing for a couple of weeks & watch it.

I am truely just glad it didn't happen like WHILE we were flying or WHILE we were trying to Snuba or WHILE we were on up at 10,000 feet on top of Mt. Haleakala.:goodvibes

Awww, thanks. I hope that it will just work out for next year. Hoping I can do something to get some money out of these DL tix as I don't think we'll be able to use them before they expire.

Sending prayers for your son to recover fully and quickly. In the end, that's what really matters, right? Have a wonderful vacation!
