WOWZA.

I work full-time in a smallish office, and the company pays for individual (employee's) health insurance. If you want to add a family member or all of your family...

If I added my DH and my DD to my insurance policy through work, I would end up owing the insurance company $200 each month after they've taken my whole paycheck. Every last penny of it.

My husband and daughter currently have NO insurance. It scares me to DEATH to have them without insurance, but we have no choice. My husband is finishing up his degree at school and is currently working part time as well as doing his internship and taking 5 classes. He graduates in May, when he'll start hunting like mad for a job with benefits, but until then... the stress... it's pretty sad that my health insurance is making me ill

Does your DH's college offer insurance? It would be a way to cover him at least.

It does, as a matter of fact DH had an appointment for a school counselor (or whatever they're called in college, lol) to talk to him about it, but it's almost as obscenely expensive through the school. We've had a salesman come out to talk about independent insurance as well... holy MOLY how can people pay that and still pay for things like, oh, food and heat and a place to live? :headache:

I hear ya. It's sad. I lost my job due to lay off in 2000 (geez, nearly 10 years ago!!), and we were without insurance for three months until I found another job. I can't imagine it's gotten any easier, and in this economy, it's taking a lot longer to find those jobs. It's sad. Here's hoping that you have no need for health insurance until you can secure it for your family. :goodvibes

For your daughter, you may want to look into the CHIP program in your state. CHIP programs help provide low-cost insurance for children. Every state has one, but of course, all the plans are different.

The main website is www.insurekidsnow.gov.

I hear ya! Dh and I are both employed full time, and both of our companies have terrible insurance. We pay $12144 in premiums a year, and have a $3000 deductible on top of that, with $6000 max out of pocket. This is being increased 12-15% this year, so probably closer to $14000 a year and the deductible is being increased also. I expect next year, I will have to pay about 18k before any benefits kick in for me. I am paid commission only, and there are months, I don't make enough to cover my insurance and still get a paycheck.

I feel your pain. I lost my job in February, and my 9-month COBRA subsidy is over as of tomorrow. Not only would I be responsible for the full COBRA amount, my former company increased the amount of employee responsibility, so now my premium would cost one-and-a-half weeks' unemployment. I can barely live on what unemployment gives in the first place. I tried to get insurance through the state, for "economic hardship," and received a phone call that the state will only consider hardship if it costs 40% of your income. Mine was close, but not close enough.

I did end up finding insurance through AAA, and it's pretty much the same as what I was getting through my employer, but $200 less than COBRA...$30 copay for preventative visits, no coverage for illness/injury visits until the deductible is reached, $2900/year deductible, 20% is my responsibility once I hit that deductible, no coverage for tests or maternity care or prescription meds...the only reason I took it is because if I have a catastrophic illness or injury (I have a history of ovarian cysts and surgery), $2900 is a lot cheaper than paying for it OOP.

Double check with your state. AZ offers insurance for adults and children and the income level to qualify is pretty decent. The deductible can be $0-60 depending on your income. We are on it, and it is really good insurance.
