I have to agree with you there. Even though I didn't care for the movie as a whole Paul Bettany did a wonderful job with his role.

I thought the movie was pretty good, but it could have been better. The is supposedly a longer cut out there that fleshes parts that didn't work because scenes were cut too short or cut all together. I hope it is released int he US some day.

I liked the movie. I would've liked it more had I not read the book first, since I LOVED the book and the movie did deviate, esp. the end. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE Paul Bettany and he did a FABULOUS job in this movie.
