Had a great 4-night stay at Hojos, building 2, deluxe queen room, Feb. 19-23.

Made good time down I-5 and got in by 2 something in the afternoon on Saturday. They had our room ready right away.

Headed down Harbor to Buca di Beppo because the family wanted something different. The service was very, very slow, but the food was tasty. Fed the whole family for $40 with tax and tip since I had a coupon.

Finally walked through the Disneyland gates around 5 PM Saturday evening as a light rain began. Ducked into the art gallery, and the downpour began. Looked outside to see hoards of people leaving the park. Got to enjoy the gallery exhibit and watched the 50th movie next door yet again. Boys really didn't want to see Abe Lincoln again; one of the few things at Disney they actually find boring. Downpour stopped and it rained off and on for the rest of the evening. It was perfect though. We never got too wet. We were able to get Indy fastpasses for an hour out, walk onto Pirates and Mansion, and enjoy one set of the swing dancing music. Then headed to DCA where we rode Toy Story FOUR times and watched WoC from the backside. Headed out of the park just after 10 PM.

Rest of the trip was very mellow for us. Pretty much got to do everything we wanted and had an overall very good time. Weather was better after Saturday, and the crowds were there too. Not terrible by any means but busy. For example, saw wait times for Space of 65 minutes on Sunday at one point and 85 minutes on Monday (it had been down for a while). Toy Story went back to being consistently busy. DS11 and I waited 50 minutes to ride it one evening, and wait times when we checked other times that day had varied between 45 and 60 minutes.

A few more observations/comments:

The Mardi Gras event in New Orleans on Sunday was ok. I really enjoyed seeing the characters in their different costumes. We got to do the Meet and Greet with Mickey and Minnie together and Chip and Dale together. The other characters were out as part of the little parade which was fun and festive, and we got a few pictures. We don't like how that part of the activity devolves into a mob all pushing and shoving, trying to get a photo op with the characters. I enjoyed the other parade/show which featured Princess Tiana, but it is pretty much the same as what they've been running since the movie came out. The music is nice though. The extra little decorations in New Orleans were a nice touch.

We finally tried Mickey beignets from the Mint Julep bar, and they were very tasty.

Rode the train once. The boys were hoping for a peek into Splash Mountain, but it is dark/covered up, so no view. It does look like a bit of work might be going on in Critter Country in that the Winnie the Pooh queue looked kind of messy, but nothing looked particularly obvious about what they were doing. Probably just touch-ups here and there in the land since they closed it down.

Buzz Lightyear without a fastpass moves pretty well. We often experienced waits of only 10-20 minutes for that ride, even later in the day.

Star Traders is temporarily located in Starcade. Kind of funky with the video games there. The regular store is getting a refurbishment though and should look fresh and nice when it returns.

Finally tried the potatoes at Troubadour Tavern, and they were really yummy and filling. They were big enough to make a meal of, so that makes them one of the better Disneyland food bargains. This place seems to be open the same hours as the Princess Fantasy Fair. We went Monday evening, about 45 minutes before closing, and the area was very peaceful and nice with plenty of available seating.

Tried the apple strudel and black forest cupcake at Village Haus since they were new items, and we had never eaten anything before at that location. The CM at the cash register was very proud of their new menu and encouraged me to return sometime to try some of the other items. We shared both desserts, and DH and I thought they were decent. I'm not sure I would go out of my way to get them again, but it was nice to find something unique.

We ate at Storyteller's for the character breakfast for the first time in almost 5 years. DH and I thought the food was a step up from Goofy's and some of the other Disney food, but variety is lacking. Also, the character interaction is pretty poor, and DS9 was disappointed. We probably would not try this meal again anytime soon. We do very much enjoy the non-character dinner buffet though and have done that for Thanksgiving for a few years now.

We still can't bring ourselves to invest real time or money into the WoC experience. We saw it a couple weeks after it opened from the red section which admittedly is not that great a view. Since we got in late Saturday night and it was raining, we found we could get a perfect railing spot dead center looking at the backside of the show a couple minutes before it started. Yes, not the way the show is meant to be viewed, but no heads in front of us, and since it was raining, no one else even around to talk or bump and jostle us. The music is nice. The fountains and color are awesome, and the technology is amazing. The water screens don't do much for me; I admit I always found that to be the least interesting part of Fantasmic as well even though I love Fantasmic as a show overall. The run time for WoC just feels so long too. DH would still like to view WoC properly from the front, ideally in blue section, and will probably get around to it someday. DS9 and DS11 who have on occasion sat and waited for Fantasmic for 2 or more hours say they don't want to bother with WoC. They say they don't feel wowed by anything they see or hear and don't care to wait in the lineup, and I kind of feel the same way. We'll probably see it properly eventually, but I'm thinking WoC just isn't all that appealing to our family. I guess we're more Fantasmic and fireworks people. Fantasmic is one of DS11's all-time favorite things about Disneyland.

My sons are really into vinylmation and did a lot of buying and trading. There are currently no Star Wars ones to be found which was a disappointment but one we were prepared for. A D-Street employee said they might be back in 2-3 weeks. We ran into some really nice people outside D-Street who were trading their duplicate vinylmations. They were happy to take anything in trade from my sons, so younger DS was thrilled to get to trade a clear and an urban for a muppet one he had been looking for and a Star Wars one.

Well, that's it for now with the random musings. I'm happy to answer questions if I'm able.

Wonderful trip report! I've quoted your section on WOC because we feel the same way. We skipped it last last summer and will most likely do the same this summer. It seems like too much of an investment in money and more importantly time. We may view for a little bit from the back side. Thanks for that tip!

Glad to hear the rain didn't dampen your fun. :thumbsup2

I totally agree with WOC. It's not on our must-do list anymore. We have seen it twice, once in the blue section (picnic) and the preferred section (Ariel's). My entire family agreed the inventment far outweighs the return. We hate having to wait for the sections to open, run/walk for a good spot, stand for 30+ minutes, etc. The show is too long. I wish they would take a good 10 minutes off the running time.

The only way we would put in effort into seeing it again is if they did the Halloween or Holiday finale as rumored.

OP- my family is considering skipping WOC this trip as well. We've never seen it and I would like to, however the timing just doesn't fit with our schedule.

We have 2 days at DLR, Tues & Fri. Tues is MM, so we will be at DL by 8:30am and I since I can't be in 2 places at once, will be unable to run to DCA for WOC FP's. Friday DL has extended hours, the only time this will happen during our stay, so again we plan on being at DL by open and see either fireworks or F! at DL- so no WOC.

My question to you...where exactly did you view WOC? You said the backside, but where?:confused3 We will be park hopping to DCA mid day and I wouldn't mind trying to fit this in on our Tuesday evening. However, I'm just not able to get FP's early in the morning and DH does NOT want to commit so much time to WOC. He would rather skip it in favor of rides and I have to agree.;)

Great trip report!

We wondered how the show would be from the backside. If we were to do World of Color again, this is how we would want do it - I'm glad to hear it's a reasonable option!

I agree. We did the Ariel's ps thing. While I love the food, it was a bit pricy for just my and DD(9 at the time). It wouldn't be so bad if you could sit and watch the show, but standing that long in one place isn't fun. Then add weather elements to the mix. For us it was day after Thanksgiving - cold and rainy. Yup, once is enough.

Great trip report!

We were just past Toy Story probably about to the point of the Midway games. We stood right up against the railing facing the lagoon, and Toy Story was behind us just to the right. I know there was a tree behind us and some unused food stands that we used for shelter when the rain got a little heavier during the middle of the show.

We were at the second WoC for the evening. We noticed that many people lined up to watch WoC from this point of view for the earlier show that evening and on the other nights we were there when it wasn't raining, but had we wanted to stop for one of those viewings there still would have been adequate space for us even a few minutes before the show started. People lined up all the way from Screamin's launch point down to the Midway games. Because it rained through our whole viewing, very few people bothered to watch from the back side. The fastpass viewing areas though looked full despite the weather.

We didn't find the view to be all that bad. The images on the water screens are reversed, so the few times there are words you are reading them backwards. You also won't see the little round orbs that come up out of the lagoon and display images and effects (this did not seem like a big loss to us). It's a reasonable view with a much more reasonable wait time. I think my boys and I would have preferred to ride Toy Story another several times though. I know they were eyeing the nearly empty queue a few times during the show and once or twice asked us how much longer the show would go on. Fortunately, due to the rain, the Toy Story line had been basically abandoned, and we slipped in two rides after WoC and before park close.

I always find it amusing that people will talk about the time it takes to walk to DL from their hotel, but have no problem waiting on the curb for fantasmic or standing up to wait for WOC. I would rather spend my time in line for a ride. I won't wait over 30 minutes for any ride. I have the luxury of living less than 2 hours away though. Just think it's funny how long people will wait for a ride but talk about saving a few minutes on the walk to their hotel/motel.

Apologies for getting technical but I would put the two things in different categories. :teacher: The hotel walk is a variable. You can change it based on how close your hotel is.

The time waiting for F! or WOC is a constant - if you want a good spot.

The time waiting for a ride is variable based on when you want to ride it. If you have a FP it is fairly constant.

Some people like me show up early to the park gates - often 30 minutes early - so as to be able take advantage of short lines in the morning. Those 30 minutes cannot be spent inside the parks so there is no missed Disney - just missed sleep! :goodvibes I trade of that constant 30 minutes in the morning for the variable length of lines on the rides.

So my answer to your question is if there is a constant/fixed time for something and I want to do that activity, then I just have to wait it out because I can't change it. I treat it differently than all the variable times for things. Those I can change and try to minimize.

What I cannot understand is people who show up 30 minutes early to DCA just to ride TSMM with a short line - even though the line later in the day is usually 30-40 minutes long. That 30 minutes early at DCA means 30 minutes lost from DL.

Sorry, I really should go to NA meetings - Nerds Anonymous...

Love math.

OP, I appreciate the report and viewing tip about WOC. This summer will be my family's first DLR trip. We are so used to WDW, and look forward to the things that are different at DLR. As I study up for the trip, I see hat WOC looks like a great show, but that it requires a certain investment of time. I don't think we'll be making that investment. We'll be among those lined up along the backside of the lagoon for the second show -and hoping for the best.

To compare it to something at WDW, we never have been willing to spend 1-2 hours staking out a parade spot at MK or a prime seat for Fantasmic. So that's how I am approaching WOC. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience.

Maybe they are not on parkhoppers...

I don't have a problem waiting up to 30 minutes for a ride, but I have no tolerance for waiting around for ages to stake out a spot for a parade or WOC (and my kids and grumpy DH have even less patience than I do). I am doing my best to avoid any sort of real waiting for us (Ridemax, early entries, character dining instead of waiting to greet, etc). Who wants to spend the majority of their vacation in a line? Ughhh... :scared1:

Having said that, if one kid loves a ride so much that they are willing to wait in line for an hour and be patient, well - that will be a revelation, and I will gladly jump on that bandwagon! Perhaps the trip will turn out to be an education in patience or NOT...:confused3

Whatever the case, I am going to try to leave it up to the kids. After all, it's for them!

I would still check to see if there are FPs when you hop over to DCA. They really don't run out until mid-afternoon usually.

That would help with the getting the fastpass part but not the time commitment part since even after having the fastpass you need to show up an hour before show time to secure your position. Still, certainly no harm in picking up a fastpass if they're still available in case the family changes their minds and decides to try it. We actually did pick up some yellow fastpasses on Tuesday because when we walked by the machines at 9:55 AM after riding Soarin' there was no one in line for WoC fastpasses. I thought DH might want to try it again from the front (and the boys and I could do something else), but in the end, even DH, the most interested person in our party, didn't want to bother with the time investment and atmosphere of crowd herding. Some of these choices obviously come down to priorities and moods. It sounds like for this poster that sitting or standing around for lengthy periods of time waiting for shows to begin is a hard sell to her family.

You're right!:thumbsup2

The time committment is probably more of an issue then getting the WOC FP's. DH just isn't willing to invest hours to WOC. Although I will certainly see if any FP's are available when we hop over to DCA, excellent idea!

"Hello....my name is Hydroguy & I'm a ......."

:lmao:

But i agree. The best 30 min. wait of the day is the 30 min. wait at the turnstile prior to opening.....especially when you're first in line. :cool1:

Great time to lather on sunscreen, look over notes & event schedules that day, munch on McBreakfast items & visit with other rise & shiners. :thumbsup2

Never been to DL but our 1st trip is June 10. Want to take in everything we can. Everyone talks about time and price being costly for WOC. Don't mind a wait but what about cost? Is this not included with DL ticket?
