American Express has a gift card designed just for kids, or teens, or birthdays, they come in 25, 50, or 100 bucks

i thought this would be a nice change instead of giving my dtr cash, a gift card for her to use, she likes the idea of a credit card she is only 10 so i though this was nice, there i a fee of 4.95 for the card, i hope this intrests someone.

You also can get Visa gift cards at most banks for whatever amount you want. I'm not sure about the fees..my sister-in-law does this for Christmas for my kids and they think it's really cool to have their own credit card!

that is nice, thanks, my only worry with Amex is that not every place takes it but everyone takes visa and mc

Just called the bank and they have a fee of 4.99 per card, so i am not sure which one i will do

I emailed my sister-in-law and she got hers at the mall. Said it was $2 per card. You can also get them online, but then you have to pay for shipping. Enter visa gift card in the search..gives a list of banks where you can get them...and you can also enter in your info and they will search for local malls where you can get them.

thanks, i love this idea, and i like that if lost or stollen funds are replacable, i think i am gonna go with the amex ones only because they have the kids design for kids.

Actually the gift cards are like travelers checks and are taken everywhere.

Just a little FYI.

if a store does not take american express then the kids canot use them. Pretty much everyone takes VI/Mc but Amex is not as open, perhaps maybe in FL they are since it is mostly tourists. :thumbsup2

I'm going to be the lone dissenter here and say that I'm would not be comfortable with my 10 year old or even my teenager having this product. To me it's basically advertising credit to young children. Having seen the disastrous effect the pushing of credit cards on college campuses has on so many young people, I certainly wouldn't want to encourage this even earlier.

I think something like this is fine for kids as long as they understand that it's just like money and needs to be cared for as such.

We got our DS5 his own $10 Starbucks card when they had Ichiro (Seattle Mariners player) on them. We carried it for him (because he's only 5 and not too careful with stuff like this yet), but when we went to Starbucks, he ordered his own hot cocoa and paid for it himself - He really loved it!

I must dissent, too, but not for the same reasons. I agree that this would work for teens, who understand the concept of card = cash, but I don't think younger children can actually budget their spending using a debit card. I think that they would just have a "swipe it and get it" kind of mentality, and not really understand how quickly $25, $50, or $100 can be spent. I think for the younger set disney dollars would be more appropriate because they could physically see their money being spent.

I totally agree with you. Maybe a diffrent approach, which is something that I have done with my kids for our upcoming trip. Is to go the the Disney store itself and purchase Disney dollars. Which is basically like using cash.
Every time my kids get their allowance they ask to go to the Disney store, where they are able to purchase their Disney dollars, which I know they will definately put it to good use.
