If you had to choose only two focal lengths, like prime lenses, what two would you choose and why? We all pretty much have walk around lenses that cover a large focal length range. But what if we could only choose two, what would they be?

I think my first would be a 50mm 1.8 for closeups, parades and night time and the second would be 105mm 2.8 for those longer reach scenes.

Ihave included a poll of ranges so others can see the most popular ranges and you can vote for two ranges.

i'd like a longer so i said 50 and 180-200 as ak is my favorite park and i might need the length for animals

Your poll only starts out at 20mm. Last night my darling wife ordered me the Canon 10-22mm for my birthday and a "we finally got ourselves out of debt" present. Eventhough I haven't used it yet, a lot of people who have one say its one of their favorite lenses. I don't know if you can edit a poll after you've posted it, but I would be curious to see if anyone votes for UWA.

The other question is should we express our votes in 35mm equivalents? You might have a full frame shooter say that they really like a 35mm and a crop shooter say they like something wider, like a 22mm when in reality, they have the same field of view giving them essentially the same composition.

Sorry if I'm being picky. I really like this idea for a poll and am interested in seeing the results.

I tried and it would not let me edit the poll. Sorry, I forgot all about the focal lengths below 20mm.

As for the crop factor, I was just thinking of the actual focal length that the lens was listed as, for example my 50mm is really a 75mm on my D50 but I am counting it as a 50mm.

As much as I love my 50mm f/1.8, I think that a 24 or 28mm f/1.8 would be better as its closer to the non croped 50mm size. Better for the indoor shots and works for portrait type photos. I also went with the 70-90 range as I love my Tamron 90mm f/2.8. With the crop is 135mm which is very good and its tack sharp and has a 1:1 Macro. Though like Jann said, I would like a longer reach for Animal Kingdom. But I could definately work the rest of the parks with a 24mm and 90mm only.

Good idea for a pool/thread. Should be interesting.
