I just got this camera last night. So far I am very impressed. I am having one problem though. I have a Gateway laptop that has the slot for the SD card, no card reader needed. I know that you have to format the memory card before you use it in the D40, I did that. My laptop won't read the memory card, I have to use the cable to transfer the pictures. Does this sound right? I thought I would just be able to plug in my card like I do for my Nikon Coolpix and be able to download them onto my computer.....Am I doing something wrong?

What size is the card you are using? Is it the same card as you use for the Coolpix? I had to upgrade the driver for my built in reader on my laptop to read any card over 1gb, this maybe the problem you are having.

I would also format the card in the camera and not on the PC. I never use the PC to format my cards.

That is probably exactly my problem! It is a 2GB card. I will try a smaller card and see if that makes a difference. Thanks! My laptop is old and it really isn't worth upgrading the reader...how much did that cost you?

All in one readers are cheap - USb2.0 ones can be had for $20 and up...but buying a new reader is not going to solve your problem..older laptops with Winxp or W2k will need the driver updated to read higher capacity cards..Also chances are the USB port in your laptop is USB1.0..that is not going to be a big deal all new devices can usually dummy down, but willl transfer very slow...

Also as mentioned do not format the card in your laptop, chances are the file system is NTFS - not many ( if any ) cameras can read that file system - you have to format in Fat32...so use the camera to set up the folder system and file system correctly..

The driver was a free update. You might want to see if you can find a driver update through gateway. They should have some kind of support online. If not, card readers are cheap.

Thanks,I will check tonight. Do I just search for "gateway card reader"?

I did format the card in the camera....but the computer kept asking me to do it again in the computer.

Bummer, I downloaded the driver and it still won't work....guess I will buy one. Thanks!
