Just got back from an overall great trip to WDW. Myself, DW (who is 7 months pregnant), DS15, DS6, DS4, DS2. We were in the parts from 11/16 – 11/23, with a DTD day on the 24th. Except for the first and last days (and, oddly enough, Monday the 18th), crowds were light… and even those days were moderate. We saw tons of 10-20 minute wait signs, only to discover that the wait was somewhere between 0-3 ride cycles.

I hope to do a full, detailed trip report, but for now, here are some highlights.

The pros:

Magic bands as a whole were great. Having your ticket, fastpass, photopass, dining plan, and charging capabilities on your wrist was super convenient. We had one glitch (one of my boys’ bands would not scan for park entry on arrival day), but it resolved itself without us having to go to guest services.

Crowds, as mentioned, were great. Some areas (major walking intersections, park entrances, etc) looked very crowded, but the CMs did a great job processing the crowds, and we got around fine. Rides and shows themselves were amazing. We did everything we could have wanted to do, usually multiple times (my oldest son probably rode Space Mountain fifteen to twenty times, for instance).

Online check in was a breeze. CM at Port Orleans Riverside pulled me out of line, used her tablet to check me in. Took five minutes or so, most of that in printing the KTTW.

Bus service was excellent. I think that we waited more than ten minutes once (not counting post-Wishes crowds and the like). Even at park close, we were on within 15-20 minutes.

Dining was a bit better overall, I thought. Garden Grill and Whispering Canyon were noteworthy. We saw more variety in the counter service, and it was great to see more dessert options (goodbye, days of only chocolate cake or carrot cake at every single place). Quick service at Riverside was excellent.

Cast members overall were very helpful and friendly. I enjoyed some longer conversations with a couple of them, and had a couple of instances where CMs would go out of their way to make us feel special.

I thought that the new Fantasyland additions were great.

Entertainment was very good. Especially enjoyed the holiday parade, Jingle Jungle parade... and man, the Celebrate the Magic! castle projection show was pretty close to amazing in my book.

Finally got to do the lights at DHS this visit... these were positively breathtaking.

Jingle Cruise was fun. Not sure that it rated the longer lines it was drawing, but it was fun (we did it three times).

Did the Monsters Inc. Laugh floor for the first time, and regret that we haven't made it a point to do so before. Very fun.

Loved the Pirates League. Great experience.

The new Seven Dwarves coaster is looking great! Was cool to see wireframed rocks become "real" boulders during our visit.

The cons:

After using them, I am certain that I dislike Fastpass plus. Despite the low crowds, we found ourselves pushing all week to get to this or that fastpass time. Sometimes, you could swap a time... sometimes, you were SOL. Hate having to preschedule times, wish you could just use FP+ the same way that FP- has always worked (i.e. get a FP, get another at ride time or two hours after original FP, whichever comes first).

Hate FP window enforcement times. Really miss the days of having to wait for the FP to be good, but being able to use it at any point later. Again, more pushing than we would have liked to have done. More crisscrossing the parks, etc.

After having it be a must do for three trips in a row, was REALLY disappointed in Le Cellier. Service was polite, but snooty (second trip in a row we've felt that way). Did not get any food at our table until one hour and ten minutes past out reservation time (i.e. 8:50 instead of 7:40). Steaks were... okay. Fairly dry. Wife's mushrooms were served cold.

My steak at Whispering Canyon wasn't as nice of a cut (thinner strip, little more gristle), but was juicy and cooked to perfection, and at the table in less than half the time.

Not sure that we'll go back to Le Cellier. I'm sorry, but a $300 meal should make you rave, not just say "it was better than a burger".

Doubt we go back to Port Orleans Riverside. We were close to a bus stop, but the walk to the lobby to fill up the mugs was a good 20-25 minute round trip. Also, this may be nitpicky, but I expect truly top notch rooms at a Disney resort. Our shower (room 3412) had red plumber's putty around the shower head arm to go along with broken and missing caulk (big gap by the wall) around the tub. Theming overall just felt lesser here than at other WDW resorts.

Also, I could not have been much more disappointed in Mousekeeping. Yes, I know - towel animals are a bonus, don't expect them, etc. The kids had mentioned them, and I had already told them to not expect to get one. Good thing.

I've stayed in Disney Resorts four times before (AKL x 2, WL, CS), I have a good idea of what to expect. Our last Mousekeeper (at Coronado) was amazing. Every day, we'd come back from the resorts to find the windows made up into actual displays featuring the kids' toys. We'd find the stuffed animals posed, watching TV, playing, etc. We got towel critters a couple of times, as well as a big towel cake for my son on his birthday. And of course, the room itself was spotless.

This time, no animals. Kids toys were somedays placed on the pillows, but that was it. Oftentimes, fold up bed wasn't made up, just folded up with stuff just haphazardly piled on the bench. One day, blanket wasn't even folded - just left in a crumpled pile on the ground. We had cobwebs on the ceiling fan that literally stayed there for the entire eight nights.

Also strange... despite us opening exactly one bath bar of soap and one bottle of shampoo, mousekeeping would add new soap, shampoo, and conditioner every day. At the end of the trip, there was a huge pile of it on the shower. Why? Also, why did we only get one bar of facial soap... and that five days in?

Felt like there were fewer character meet and greets around. I really hate this.

Pin trading was as bad as I've ever seen. You were lucky to find a nice pin on one out of five CMs. Tons of the same ones, over and over and over again.

I felt like more of the little touches were gone... no caroling for the holidays, no more mist effect on PotC, character spot at Epcot is down to three characters (used to be all of the Fab Five), little details here and there seemed to be gone or reduced. Bad show, Disney.

Okay, my little post got big. Please understand, I still love WDW, and will be back in 2-3 years, per usual. If you have any questions at all, fire away!

Great feedback!

Good to know about the pins. Was interested in doing it for the first time with my kids this year (DD is 7, DS is 3) but we'll only be there one day, and then on a cruise, so it sounds like it would be a waste of effort.

I just got back from POR myself and I had an AWESOME mousekeeper there. We had tons of towel animals and the kids stuffies were always rearranged into super cute scenes. However, (and I don't know if you did this or not) we left our tip in cute ways, like the stuffies holding the tip or tucking it into Goofy's hat and my kids left thank you notes that they wrote each morning thanking Janet (found her name on a tag on the rack beside the sink). She obviously appreciated us taking a few minutes to do something thoughtful for her. My son is still talking about Janet like she was our best friend.

I was also surprised that there were only three characters at Epcot. I was hoping Pluto was going to be there like he was two years ago. Bummer! He was out front with a really long line so we never got a picture with him. :(

I love pin trading. My six year old traded many, many times on the trip - but understand, he'll make a trade no matter what. He might trade that pin away again in five minutes, but that's fine.

My fifteen year old did some decent trading. My wife and I did a little. It's still there, but much harder than it used to be.

Don't know that I wold bother for one day, however.

We were there at the same time! Our vacation differed, as we stayed off-site and cut down our Disney days to have one beach day and one downtime day, but overall I agree with your report- especially the pins!

Thank you for sharing some of your experiences.

Anyone have any idea what is going on with the pin trading?

No excuse for subpar housekeeping....the rooms cost a bunch and the service should align with the price.

Did you do any FP-?

I remember when Canada was a great meal to grab a lunch......sadly, they priced themselves out of our range long ago. $300, yikes for not a wowing experience is not good.

Not sure about pin trading. Could be scrappers from ebay; I really can't say. I've never worried about whether a pin I was trading for was authentic, but if you get tons of the same fakes, perhaps it explains something.

I do know that in the past, you could expect to find good pins at rope drop and at shift change. Not so anymore - instead of fresh lanyards with nice pins, the CMs all had the same crap pins on.

We did use some FP-. We didn't do many (usually 1-3 per day), as there honestly wasn't much need; with the exceptions of Toy Story, Soarin, and RNRC, FP were usually available at no later than an hour our all day long.

I'm going to wager a guess and say that Pin Trading is on its way out. It either was no longer profitable or the head honchos would rather focus the money elsewhere for a bigger return.

Personally I never got the point of it, but from the way it was 'everywhere' and now to hear that its not as good as it was, add in that CMs didn't have any 'good' pins...probably on its last legs.

There were still tons of nice pins available for sale. Some great sets, nice random packs, mystery pins, you name it. New designs with movable parts, dangles, all sorts of things.

You just never saw them on CMs.

Oh ok. It still could be down to $$. They'd rather guests actually buy them as opposed to giving them to CMs to trade which might lose them money in the larger scope. Even though the trades are supposed to be equal, its never in Disney's favor this way. They can't resell (as far as I know) the pins the CMs recieve in exchange for the new trade.

We just returned from POR as well, and had very similar experiences as you did. Our trip was from the 15th-22nd.

We used both FP+ and FP-, but also felt that we had to work around our FP+ times sometimes. It really was only a problem in EPCOT where it felt we had to walk a long distance to go between FP+ reservations and dining reservations, etc. We liked being about to use FP+ for character meet and greets. We likely would not have waited in many of the character lines if we had to wait 30+ minutes for them. As it was, we waited 30 minutes for Seven Dwarfs and for princesses from Frozen.

We also noticed that walkways seemed somewhat crowded, however, wait times were rarely longer than 15 minutes. The only exception I can think of was TSM. We used standby (10 minutes) during morning magic hours, FP+ and FP- for three rides.

Our housekeeping was pretty good at POR. We had a towel Mickey when we checked in, and one towel animal during our stay. My DD stuffed animals were arranged every day. You mentioned that you had extra soap, extra each day. This was the first trip where we did not have this.

POR... This was our second stay here. We didn't care for it much the first time, but decided to give it another try since our preferred moderate resort POFQ didn't have availability with free dining. We liked it better this time, but it is still our least favorite moderate. It just does not seem as magical as the other moderates. It doesn't have the same cheery feel. It actually seems a little dreary to me (Alligator Bayou). The only highlight from POR was the cast member that was leading pool activities and the campfire on Tuesday. She was very cheery. She was also the cast member that checked us out on Friday. By far the friendliest cast member we ran into at POR. We also felt it was too far to walk for drink refills. It seemed by the time we made it back to our room, we needed another refill. Also, drinks in the vending machines were more expensive than the drinks in the parks. What's up with that? This really irked me since we did not have a refrigerator during the first part of our trip. One was installed on Monday or Tuesday.

Boat service from POR lacks when compared to POFQ. It is the same boat, but since it stops at POFQ coming and going to DTD you get much better service at POFQ. It seemed we had to wait forever to load and unload at POFQ each trip. At least the boats did come frequently. It almost seemed that the boat would leave the dock until the next boat arrived.

Le Cellier... I have to agree it just was not worth it. We had an early reservation and were served promptly. The food was all warm, and cooked to order. Service was a little slow, but the food nor service just was not worth two table credits. Honestly, I didn't feel the food was the tip we left much less what the check would have been. This will be our last visit to Le Cellier as well.

Cast members over all were pretty good, but didn't seem to be as cheerful on whole as I recall from previous trips. Perhaps it is just my perception though, or high expectations. This is the first time I saw cast members "out of character", talking about personal stuff, when they got of work, etc. We did have several great experiences as well (in addition to the one at POR). Our waiter at Mama Melrose was fantastic. A cast member at Cosmic Rays went above and beyond to help us out of a family moment where we were bickering with our DD about her food choices.

We didn't notice fewer meet & greets, other than only three at the character spot you mentioned. We also did the Disney VISA meet & greet which usually had multiple characters but this time only Mickey.

We have the bands and reservations for FP+. We hope to use the old FP system. Is it still available?

Yep, it is still up and working. We got KTTW (i.e. room key cards) at check in, and used them throughout the week to pull legacy fastpasses.

We didn't need them a ton due to the lower crowds, but they definitely helped a lot. Three FP per day just isn't enough.

Lots of good info! Question - Where you would like to stay for your next trip?

If I had my druthers, I'd either go back to Wilderness Lodge,, or give one of the monorail resorts a shot (have always wanted to do the Poly). However, deluxes are just out of my price range right now, since I have to do two rooms.

I'll probably either try Caribbean Beach or go back to Coronado (which we loved... super central location, quick busing to all resorts, tons of great food selections).

Thank you T catt. We will be there next week and I anticipate some crowds. If they would keep both systems, it would be fantastic. Did they automatically give you the cards at check in or did you have to ask?
