Just back from the 10/29 NYC Magic..importance of cruise insurance

WOW....all the anticipation and excitement, and it was over in a blink. Getting of the ship is always depressing.

But..we had a good time. 1st thing I wanted to comment on is the importance of cruise insurance. Something horrible happened to a family in line to check in at the port, and it really saddened us. We were called up to the counter and the CM no sooner started to get our information, when he ran away from us and ran over to a family group yelling for 911. It was a woman having a seizure. Ambulance came and carted her away. To get that close to going on the ship and have a medical emergency before stepping onto the ship...so sad for her and her family.

Sea was rough the 1st night and all day Sunday. My DD and I were sorry we didn't put our transderm patch on before we set sail. We actually forgot to. By dinnertime we were cruelly reminded.

My adult children loved the 1820 society. I think it is a great way to transition them from growing up in the kids club. They had a "leader" at all the events, and they really enjoyed the cruise staff that organized the social events.

Bingo..I WON!!! I was so shocked and excited..it was a cover-all not the jackpot, but I got $161 credited to my OBA. Not too shabby.

We had perfect weather on CC. Disney was fun, but we did all 4 parks, so we felt like we were missing a ton. The Star Wars show in HS is amazing!!! The bus ride back to the ship turned into a mess. There was an accident on the interstate and all traffic was taken off the highway. Our bus driver spent 45 minutes driving in the wrong direction. As frustrating as it was to get back on board 3 hours after leaving the parks, (11:30pm)we found out the next day we were one of the "lucky" unlucky buses. The last bus rolled up at 1:15am. I would have physically cried. After how tired we were.....

Dr Strange premEARED on the ship and it was great! Everyone loved Tangled, but I thought Disney Dreams was the best show of the week.

I don't think I will be sailing out of NYC in the fall again. It was quite chilly on the way out and on the way back.

Now it's back to reality. The worst part of Disney cruises is they have to come to an end

ETA: I forgot the highlight of the week! We were at sea with the Wonder coming back from Spain. She was sailing behind us. When we returned from WDW at almost midnight, she was docked next to us in PC. What a beauty she is at sea.

How scary for the other family. Sounds like the CM were able to rise to the occasion and get her the best possible care.

I was considering next year's repo to San Juan from NYC, but it's not until the end of November. Also was hesitating because of cold weather. At what point did you notice the weather warming?

We do get travel insurance. As the others have said, I hope the woman is well.

I was on the DVC MC that sailed on Sept 28 and we had rough seas on the first day, but the beautiful day in Halifax made it all worth while. My cousin was on the Oct 2 sailing and they had calm seas all of the time.

We missed seeing the Statue of Liberty, so we're giving a NYC departure one more chance, next year, we'll take the repositioning cruise to San Juan. I will book Palo around 8 on debarkation day....not missing seeing the statue from the ship again. This year we were at dinner.

I say how lucky for the family to have it happen at the terminal and not out at sea. I am woefully unprepared with what should the response be with someone having seizure, so I am glad it happened there than in other places. But yes, quite a difficult time for them.

I don't have little ones anymore, so I didn't really involve myself in the kids stuff that was happening all day. The little ones were adorable. Some great costumes. The adult costume party was not much. It was literally stand on the stage if you are in a costume and they handed out cards with a category. If you got a card, you were called up to the stage based on your category and we voted by applause for the best costume.

Did you get full navigators or just the one sheet Ines?

The one sheet inserts. We mainly used the app on our phones though. 

Such a busy day at the parks, what did you use your fastpasses on?

Fortunately, we didn't really need our FP's. The lines were all less than 20 minutes. Actually..they were all walk-on. Basically the standby wait gave the amount of time it took to walk the queu. Test Track was 30 minutes, but we just got in the single rider line for that. We used our FP on Soarin, Toy Story Mania, and Splash Mountain, just to use them.

That is so crazy! We left Port Canaveral on the Fantasy on the same day and the same thing happened only to a man. We had just gone through the line to board and were about to get our picture taken when everybody started going into emergency mode and we looked behind us and there was a man on the ground and his family was totally freaking out. I don't know if he had a seizure, a heart attack, or just passed out. We continued onto the ship so we wouldn't be in the way. It definitely freaked us out and was not a great way to begin our cruise. I felt horrible for them and quite shaken up. We had to divert for a medical evacuation the next day. I wondered if the two were related. I definitely said some prayers for the families.

I'm intimately familiar with seizures. My father, my husband, my 2 brothers in law, and sister in law all have epilepsy. If it is a known issue that is under treatment, the passenger may have still made it to the sailing.

On the other hand, if this was their first seizure, there's no way to know what caused it without many tests and I'm sure they missed the sailing. Hoping they are ok.

The ambulance carted her away. Now, working in the health care field, I was sooo hoping that she got checked out in an ED somewhere, cleared and the family made it back to the terminal by 330pm. This all happened around 1115-1130am. But, reality is, an ED in NYC? No way she was discharged in 3 hours.

I, too, wish and hope that the lady is doing better. Think of it this way, this could have happened while on the ship. At least this was still in port and she could get the necessary medical attention much quicker.

We just did the repo and had a nice day for sailaway. The next day there were people already at the pool. I did think it was a bit cool for swimming. By the next day we were swimming. We stayed an extra day in Puerto Rico and arrived home to weather in the 50s. I wouldn't hesitate to cruise then. February would be a different story!!

So sad for the family. I hope the lady is okay. We always get insurance. The expense of being evacuated from a ship in the middle of the ocean scares me!
