We're just back from five days at HHI and had a nice trip. We had two days of near perfect weather and two days of some rain/some sun and one really cloudy day. The resort was not crowded, in fact it seemed like only three families were there, as we kept seeing the same people at all the activities! We were in a 1 BR in the building next to the lodge with just a view of some trees and brush. Our villa was in good shape - no complaints! We did a few activities with the kids and they had a good time at the Unbirthday Party, Pirates of the Calibogue, Goofy Bingo and the Campfire. DH and I were disappointed that they didn't do the Members "Mick's Ears". Several papers with the check-in stuff mentioned having it on Member's Day - Wednesday, but this week it was scheduled for Friday - so we missed it - Oh well! We had great meals at the Old Oyster Factory, Guiseppe's, and the Hofbrauhaus and a pretty good meal at the Redfish. DH and I were trying to decide whether we like VB or HHI better for our Fall Break - what a tough decision. I guess we'll just have to alternate vacations each year;)

Thanks for the report, glad you had a good time! :D We're heading for out for our first trip to HH next week. Was the Hofbrahaus really good? I haven't told my DH that there is a German restaurant there, because I know he'll insist on trying it, but if it's really good, and they have entertainment, I may cave. ;)

What was the favorite activity for your kids?

It sounds like you had a great trip. I'd like to hear more about the Old Oyster Factory. We're thinking about trying this restaurant when we're at Hilton Head in a few weeks. Can you tell me where it's located? Did you feel 5 days was long enough? Our first trip we stayed 6 days and last year we stayed a few days before heading down to OKW and it was just too short of a time to really get into that relaxed mood.

When you made your reservation, did you make any requests? I'm just curious because my sister and her husband were in the main lodge last year and they had a beautiful marsh view. I requested main lodge, marsh view and I wonder where we'll end up. It really won't make a difference to us in the long run but I was surprised how lovely the view was from their unit because we've never had a marsh view before.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi,

Sounds like you had a Wonderful trip!! I'm leaving for HHI tomorrow & coming back Tuesday. Any tips before we leave? We will be in a one bedroom. It's just me & my mom. Thanks for sharing!

My guess is that the reason that the "Mick's Ear" was changed to Friday is that this is a holiday weekend and the occupancy will probably be higher than it was during the week. (I tried to convince DH that we needed to go this weekend, but was unsuccessful. )

Glad you enjoyed your trip though -- I'm sure it was absolutely beautiful at this time of year!

ZerasPride, what type of unit will you be in? I'm sure if you request a marsh view, you'll be able to get it, since the resort is probably not too crowded right now. Old Oyster Factory is on Marshland Road. You can see it across the marsh from the resort! (You just go back towards the mainland to Mathews Drive --where Adventure Cove is -- and turn left. Then turn left on Marshland. It will be on your left.) Food there is usually pretty good and I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

TNMomof3 - We had eaten at the Hofbrauhaus on our last trip and was not all that impressed - this time we tried it again because it had a special "Octoberfest" menu which included more traditional German food - so we tried it again and enjoyed it. There was a man playing keyboard/accordian - not a real treat in our opinion. Anyway, I've been to German Restaurants with more entertainment and better food, but we were glad we went back this time.

ZerasPride - The Old Oyster Factory is actually just across Broad Creek from the Disney resort - you can see it from the pier; however you have to drive a short distance to get there. We went early (about 5:30) and had a table overlooking the water, but the place filled up quickly and we were there on a Monday! Our food was wonderful. I had tilapia from their "nightly specials" and it was wonderful. DH had Swordfish, which he liked, but he liked my tilapia even more! He also had gumbo which he enjoyed. Dessert was also yummy! They also offer a 10% DVC discount. As far as time there - I wish we had longer. We didn't arrive until Sunday - because we wanted to avoid the Sat. night points and we had to leave on Thursday. I would have felt a little more relaxed if we could have stayed longer, but sometimes work just gets in the way of fun! We only requested a non smoking 1 BR and didn't specify view - so we just took what they gave us. We checked in around 11:30 a.m. - so we took what was offered and was happy with it.

Tinkgrl - No tips other than take an appetite and a good book and have a relaxing time!

Thanks Disneyaholic! I know exactly where the restaurant is now. I remember seeing Adventure Cove and thinking that it looked like fun plus we have a Mathew in our family so that street name stood out to me - and the fact that many of the traffic lights seem to last a long time! We'll be in a one bedroom villa and like I said, I did request marsh view in the main lodge so hopefully we'll have the nice view my family had last year.

Thanks to you too gracelrm! It sounds like the food is pretty good and with the DVC discount we'll probably give it a try (we'll get there early too). I wish we could stay longer but we're paying cash with the member discount and I don't want to have to spend more money than I have to so no extra nights for us.

I can't wait to get going!!!

My wife and I love Kurama Japanese Restaurant (down near Sea Pines Circle by the Staples Store) They do the show and cook at your table! We loved the volcano part. We go early in the evening for the Early Bird Specials

This is not sushi, it is a real filling meal cooked at your own table.

Ok,

I have a question.

What is up with DH. What does it stand for.

Everyone seems to say DH and I this or that.

As for hhi.

I live here. ;)

If you need directions for anything you can email me at:
dvc@hostevolve.com.

I will be glad to help you with anything I can.

michaeln, welcome to the boards, and thanks for the kind offer! :D DH can mean anything from "Dear Husband" to "Darn Husband". :teeth: There are several of those abbreviations like
DS - dear son
DD - daughter
DW - wife
DSIL - sister in law
DGD - dear granddaughter

It took me a while too. :D

gracelrm,

There are several activities listed next Wednesday for Member Day. What exactly is the "Mick Ears"? It's listed under Longview Cooking Club. There is also a "Behind the Ears" tour. Anybody done that? Those are the only 2 activities on Member Day that I'm not quite sure what they are.

Thanks!

Too bad you didn't get to have the "Mick's Ears!" We went to that this past June and had a blast! We met so many nice people, then kept meeting up with them throughout the week.

gracelrm.
We were there the week before you and had great weather! Just like you experienced, the resort was real quite (which was great).

The member "Mick's Ear" (mixer) is one of Chef Gordon's wonderful creations. Members meet at Surfmen's Station (beach house) for hors d'oeuvres and beverages (including wine). It's a great way to meet others and get a sampling of Gordon's treats. There is a small charge for it, but it is well worth it!

The "Behind the Ears" tour is a tour of the resort itself, with a little of the history and lore behind the building of the resort. You'll get to look for some hidden Mickeys while enjying the beautiful scenery of Longview Island. I have done the tour several times, but still enjoy taking it almost each time we go to HH!!

Thank you disneyaholic! :D Is the "Mick's Ear" appropriate for familys? We'll have our kids ages 9, 7, and 2 with us. The two older kids could play in a game room nearby, but the baby would need to stay with us. I'd love to enjoy this event, but wouldn't want to show up with children if it's typically adults only. Thanks again!

Thanks on the explination of DH. Thats what I thought but did not want to jump to conclusions.

;)

I think you can probably bring the kids to the Mick's Ear. We brought our two teenagers -- Gordon had soft drinks available for them. It wasn't the top thing on their list of things to do, but they did enjoy the trivia contest.

If the hors d'oeuvres are not exactly what your kids have in mind, I'm sure that they can just hang out in the game room -- just make sure it will be open first! And, of course, your little one can stay with you -- it's Disney after all. ;)
