There is nothing wrong with asking if an upgrade is available. Sometimes they are free, sometimes not.
That being said, I asked on checkin if an upgrade was available in Dec and sadly, there was none (free or paid for). Did I complain ? NO, Did I whine about other people getting them and not I? NO, Did I still enjoy our pool view with a partial savannah view? YES, Would I stay there again? In a heartbeat!
If you go expecting an upgrade, you are misguided and unreasonable. If pixie dust gets spread on you, congratulations and enjoy.
