Just back from 11 days at OKW - the good and the not so good

Had a pretty good stay during the crazy busy holiday season! Parks were busy, but we could manage. Awesome shows and parades, and Osborne and castle lights were incredible!!

We were in a 1 bedroom Villa in the 50 section, and although it had a nice view of the fairway, it was way too far down. We had to drive a pretty good way to get to our villa.

Enjoyed our full kitchen so much (had to call for strainer as that was missing from kitchen), and despite cold temps, were able to eat on the balcony a few times - that is heaven for us! We love OKW balconies!

Our room was pretty spotless (except for some issues down below), except for some dust bunnies here and there, and the few issues below.

We also hated having the buses outside of our villa - heard them in the early morning and late night, and it was really distracting as they are loud.

Mattresses were very hard in both room and sofa bed, but all blankets and pillows were there, so that was great.

Walls per paper thin - we could hear everything next door, and I'm sure they could hear us! We have stayed pretty much everywhere on property, and this villa was really bad for noises.

Worst issue was a very moldy shower, plugged shower and sink. Mold was coming up through the shower grate, and the sink would not drain. After 2 mornings we had enough, and the engineer came right up and fixed it. Never had an issue again.

Asked housekeeping to handle mold, and it was not done, so we had to do the best we could ourselves, as kids would not use shower, and we didn't blame them. Black mold was on the faucet, crevices, corners, windows, etc., rust stains on tiles and broken grout. Reported it several times, and just sent an email to make sure that they fix it, as it is unacceptable.

The other major issue was that a staff member entered our room with privacy sign on door. We were at MK all day, and returned to find the marathon info note on our TV unit, despite privacy sign on. It was night before checkout, so we had left some things out - I called and spoke to manager, who apologized and said he would follow up. Heard another guest in the lobby about 1 hour later, addressing the exact same issue.

Lastly, we noticed that this being a corner unit seemed smaller than other 1 bedrooms we have stayed in at OKW. The kids even noticed. No big deal, just interesting observation.

Staff was great! Awesome meal at Olivias, and good snacks at Goods to Go! Any questions, Tiger :)

I find it very concerning that there are so many complaints about mold - there is no reason for Disney to tolerate this from housekeeping. DVC is not cheap and this should be addressed before guests start complaining. Perhaps it is time for Disney to contract housekeeping from another source.

I too am distressed to hear that the mold situation was not taken care of immediately...that is probably one thing that I would give them 24 hours to get taken care of and if not, the would expect to be moved to another villa and have this one taken out for maintenance.

I am glad to hear that you followed up with an email to member satisfaction.

Since the rehab, with the carpet removed from the 1 bedroom living areas, the villas sound very "echo-y." There is nothing to dampen the sound, so yes, OKW does seem much noisier than before. I'm surprised that whoever designed the rehab didn't even think of that.

Mold - I agree. But it was full house, so no other rooms. We didn't even bother to ask, as they told us at check in that they were full. It was a big problem, especially since the shower and sink were totally plugged. It was disgusting...so that bathroom is in need of some serious TLC. And, I am not sure how housekeepers are missing black mold on faucets and peach colored walls either?

Noise - it really was a disaster! The guests next door knocked on the walls to quiet our kids down who were standing at the door as we were leaving. Nothing out of the ordinary at all, but all sounds are magnified. These same guests were throwing furniture around (that is what it sounded like), screaming babies and loud talking, yet we didn't knock on the walls, as we knew nothing could be done about it. It made for a difficult 11 days, as we kept our kids from pretty much breathing, lest they disturb someone, and we didn't get much sleep as we could hear everything next door and outside...

We love OKW - it has become our fav resort, but these few things did add a little discomfort to our stay, but not enough to ruin anything at all.

And of course we report all issues - can't say the same about the other guests who have been in that room. If they had done that, we wouldn't have had to call for missing items, nor to unplug the shower and sink, nor deal with a yucky moldy shower....

We are just back from OKW as well Tiger and I agree with your assessment on the noise. Wow!! We could hear what sounded like a child's toy being dropped over and over and over, stomping/marching, and furniture dragging from one end of the vila to the other throughout the day and night. The floors seem to have no sound buffer at all in the living area.

I am curious on your thoughts about the shower in the master bedroom. I never could get it hot enough or gather enough water pressure for my tastes. Did you have that problem?

Still loved OKW and had a great trip! Glad you did as well:thumbsup2.

Thanks. Maybe you missed it in my original response, but I already sent an email to Member Satisfaction, as well as reported it while at OKW. :thumbsup2

Missed it, thanks for letting them know. :thumbsup2

Well now, we check in on Wednesday and have not been there since they reno'd. OKW has always been our fav resort. Hope this noise issue doesn't change this for us. Thanks for the update!

That's the same thing we experienced during our Dec 20-26 trip. We were in a 1st floor 2BR in building 14. Exactly the same sounds and could hear little kid voices...until like 2am most nights. Who keeps little kids up until 2am?

We also noticed, the 1st night, that the ducts in the ceiling were popping very loudly. My FIL had set the thermostat to 67 (and froze us out...brrrr), so I think it was popping from the cold. But, it sounded like guns going off all over. I kept the thermostat at 72 after that (FIL kept lowering it to 69 and I kept bumping it back up...LOL) and never had that problem again.

OP- Sorry your trip wasn't the very best it could be. I wish you a better trip next time.

Those of you checking in soon...or anytime this year really, request the top floor.

It was ok, but not that strong of water pressure, now that you mention it? Not sure if they are set this way, as our faucet at home is like this for energy conservation reasons?

We stayed in March, so we have been there after the refurbishment, and this trip just seemed to have amplified sounds and noises, as well as the mold issue, which we have never experienced in any other Disney room, and like I said, we have stayed at every resort on property except for BLT, Treehouse and GF.

OKW is still our fav resort! :lovestruc

You just reminded of those noises too! There were popping noises all over the place - we had our thermostat set to 71, and we still heard the noises. Kids would not sleep in the living room because of it, which made for very difficult sleeping arrangements!

Incidentally, we were on a top floor, and still heard these crazy noises each and everyday!

Despite these small issues, we had a great time! We love OKW!

And OP...we also could hear the buses as we were directly across from the HH bus stop...the second BR of our 2 BR was the very end as close to that bus stop as possible with a window facing right at it. MIL and FIL insisted we sleep in there with our 2 DDs, so that DDs would have a real bed instead of using the pull-out sofa bed (as mentioned on another thread...those beds were hard and uncomfortable anyway, so we should of let them sleep on the pull-out). MIL and FIL got the master at the back of the unit and away from the bus noise (and they had the nice bathroom with the jetted tub ). Luckily, I was so tired from late nights and going in the parks all day...that I still managed to fall asleep and stay asleep for a solid 6-8 hours. The buses would wake me at 6 am, but I'd fall back asleep and sleep until 8ish. We picked that location and the 1st floor because MIL has bad knees and wanted to be as close to the HH and bus stop as possible. I honestly don't plan to stay at OKW again...unless we want to conserve points or we can't get into BCV, BLT or BWV. If we do need to stay there again, we'll request top floor of building 55 (on the canal).

i agree with the water pressure. They could increase it just a little and maybe my 15-20 minute shower would go back down to the 5 minutes i normally take. good to know about the noise etc as we were considering an add-on.

We were in a dedicated 2 bedroom in building 46 last week, on the top floor, and heard zero noises from other guests, or from the Disney buses. We specifically asked for a top floor, quiet building for this very reason. We were assigned a studio in building 14 last October, and the bus noises were a nightmare. Yes, going up and down the stairs every day was a pain, but it was so worth it to have a quiet villa.

We also noticed the low water pressure, but it wasn't a problem for us. One day during our stay, we had no hot water - our entire building was out of hot water. That made taking showers to make rope drop very interesting. We also had one slow draining sink, but it wasn't a big deal. We had zero mold in the villa, and our villa was in great shape overall. We really enjoyed our stay there, and wouldn't hesitate to stay at OKW in the future.

We had a spa day at SSR and thoroughly enjoyed the locker room amenities including awesome showers. That was my only hot shower with great water pressure the entire week we stayed at OKW. Still loved OKW and had a great trip.

This is why we aren't staying at OKW on our next stay. My husband, myself and my son are all asthmatics. We find when we stay at OKW, we are very ill for the whole trip, but only when in the room. We will be trying AKL in Feb and hope things will be better.

Have to agree with OP & others on noise issue. Stayed in 44 top floor 1 BR recently....totally quiet most of week (thankfully). Then a couple checked into the adjacent studio & it was UNREAL how much noise was generated! Please don't ask how we KNOW it was a COUPLE (this is a DIS board, after all) but WOW! Also, they played music constantly & once when HE asked HER which CD to play, I almost answered him!

If the entire week had been this noisy, I honestly would have been miserable. We could actually hear EVERY conversation even when they weren't speaking loudly.

I have my first solo trip coming up & am now wondering whether to book a studio elsewhere. :sad2:
