Just got back from a 7-day Alaskan Cruise with Celebrity Cruise line (Owned by RCCL).

We were part of a big family group as it was my in-laws 50th anniversary (And they paid for all of us to go! Thanks Mom and Dad! They even put our DD’s in their own cabin!).

Both M&D and DW's brother said before hand that Celebrity was their favorite cruise line.

Here are some comparisons of DCL to Celebrity (OFten referred to just as "X" since that is their logo).

[Note: These are my experiences only and are not meant to be mean or belittle others. Set Flame throwers to "off " positions]

Rooms:

We book Cat 9 on DCL and had a similar room on X. MUCH SMALLER than DCL. Much less storage space.

NO SPLIT BATHROOMS. Gosh we missed them.

We had the best room in the group of seven rooms. All rooms had large porthole, but our king (nice) bed was set away from the outside wall and we had nice access with a sitting area.

Everyone loved our room and it became the “party” room.

It also had floor to ceiling mirrors facing the bed, which (a) led to increased feeling of space and (b) led M-I-L to blurt out “This is the s*x room!” as she walked in. My DD (13) turned crimson. We all had a great laugh. But then again…..

Service:

Our cabin steward and his attendant were great. All the others in our group said they were the best they had ever had and never had so much friendly interaction with one before. (None had sailed DCL before).

However, he was equalled by DCL. Our last steward was very friendly. It may be just me but I always find them to be nice and personable on every ship I’ve been on.

Food:

No comparison. DCL did a much better job, IMHO. Our servers were good (but the asst. seemed to have a lot to do and wasn’t always “right there” with the drinks).

The food was nothing spectacular, and the portions were smallish. (Tell that to my bathroom scale!).

We were talking after the cruise and we were asking what was the best food item, and were a bit hard pressed. My answer was the consommés.

We did have great staff, including the head waiter who we saw every night .

The Ship:

Just Not Disney. No soaring lobby. The shows were ok, just not eye-popping.

Activities:

They had some, and a kids program. (Can’t comment on that since DD’s are teens.

No teen program, at least the kids went to.

Did have a decent casino, with a no-smoking area, though.

Itinerary:

OK. I’m comparing apples to oranges here. Alaska to the Carribean.

The sights were amazing. Fishing in Ketchikan (Catch-I-Can! Salmon arrives Friday, smoked and processed).

Juneau we helicoptered to a glacier.

Sitka was a charming town, but it was rainy and that put a damper on things.

Wildlife was AMAZING. Bald eagles everywhere. Saw one swoop down and take a salmon out of the water so big the eagle couldn’t get fully airborne. Just flew over the water with the fish’s tail creating a wake in the water as it skimmed along. Just flew to the shore and chowed on it.

Our fishing charter captain called a BE down with a whistle and threw him a piece of cut herring that he took from no more than 10 feet away.

Whales! Saw them swimming, breaching, blowing air, etc.

My poor sister in law was at the wrong place at the wrong time. She NEVER saw one. Until the last dinner: going through the Inside Passage a pod of 3-4 Orcas swam right by our Dining room window! I thought she would jump out of the ship

NOTE: We did no ship excursions, just did them all on our own, usually using shoretrips.com.

OVERALL Rating:

Service: A
Food: B
Ship B+
Room B
Activities: B

Overall Celebrity Rating: B+.

Overall DCL Rating: A+

Conclusion:

While we had a ball, the ship just was not DCL. I think my rating would be a bit lower even if the itinerary hadn’t been new to us and so amazing.

Can’t wait to go back to DCL this Xmas!!!!

Sorry this was so long but hope it helps.

Again, these are just my views.

Cool! Thanks so much for your post! We've thought (briefly) about saving a little cash and booking with another line, but we're just to afraid that it won't live up to our expectations. To us it just seems worth it to pay the extra with DCL and know that our cruise will be spectacular! The only reason we would ever stray would be for the same reason you did...a different itinerary.

Thanks again for the post!!

Thanks for the info. My inlaws are talking about which cruise they want us all to next June for their 40th. We have all taken DCL before as a family so I think we might just stick with what works for us. Where did you leave from? Seattle? DH and I want to take an Alaskan cruise in a few year.

Thanks for the post. We sailed Alaska in 2003. It was amazing! My parents also treated all of us (11) to the cruise. We caught a King Salmon and had it flash frozen and sent home. I called it our $800 fish! (between the cost of the tour, sending it to Florida, etc).

Personally, I thought Celebrity was better than DCL, but I was comparing it to a three night (shortened from 4 due to hurricane) cruise last September on the Wonder. I can't wait to go again for a more "normal" experience and really see how I feel about DCL. I am surprised about the food you experienced on Celebrity. You are the second person to comment recently that the food is just okay on X. They have always been known for their cuisine so I am wondering if they are cutting back?

Enjoy your holiday cruise!

I had the exact thought about them "cutting back".

We sailed from Vancouver. Sailing was Sunday and we arrived Friday, leaving two days to see the city.

Only needed one.....

Some seedy areas only a block of two from touristy areas were VERY dicey.

I belive DCL just again proves the old adage "You Get What You Pay For."

Jim

Thanks for the post. That was great. We have been considering sailing Alaska after "just one more" DC. We'd love to see your pictures.

This is nice to hear. We have heard Celebrity was a good cruiseline. I like to hear others with the same opinions as myself. I have to say RCCL (not Celebrity) was just not DCL, while the cruise was fun it just could not compare to DCL.

very nice post...glad you had a great time on Celebrity...

Non DCLers have no idea what they are missing .....I'm often asked by folks who have that preconceived notion of what they think cruising DCL must be like (big red boat, kiddyland), why we are so loyal to DCL .....they just have no clue.....every friend I've ever convinced to go on DCL, either acompanying my family and I , or on their own, considered it the best vacation ever....

For adults only, we sailed on Crystal in March and it was AMAZING. An older crowd, but for food, service and relaxation it coud not have been better. Not for kids though.

We are trying NCL's new ship the Jewel in November ( just me and hubby) and have a romance suite with butler,e tc. booked fo $2800 total. I am very excited. The ship has ten restuarants and free style dining so it will be very different for us. I just booked DCL again for March (four nights) for me and two of my kids (husband did not like DCL and doesn't want to take the time off). I am determined to try again and experience Castaway Cay!

We are doing Alaska next year this week so I was happy to see your comments. Which ship was it? We are on Celebrity Infinity also out of Vancouver. We are also planning to travel on Friday so I am pleased to know that we don't need more time that that.

Any other comments would be appreciated.

Thanks Jim. I have been wondering where you have been lately. Haven't seen as much of you recently.

Something I didn't realize before we went was how much it rains in SE Alaska. We went on RCCL last July and it was dry and quite warm, but some of those towns have an avg annual rainfall of 150 inches! We rented a car in Vancouver to see some of the sights outside of the town.

Thanks for the post Jim. We all love DCL but it is nice to hear about other experiences. My wife want sto go to Hawaii and Alaska and we think we will go on RCCL for Alaska since it seems to have great kids programs.

I want to take the Wilderness Express train ride which you can book as past of your RCCL cruise.

Does X offer anything like that?

I was on the RCI Radiance of the Seas, Alaska, June '06. We left from Vancouver and I must say the 2 days we spent there were wonderful. The weather was exceptional, partly sunny and 70's. One day we took the trolley and got off at various stops to enjoy the sites and then spent the next day out of town at Capilano (sp) bridge and then the Grouse Mt tram. IMHO Vancouver is a beautiful, friendly, diverse city and I would gladly go back.

The cruise was great, also!

I don't know what has happened to Celebrity. They used to be the crown jewel of mid level cruising - i.e. in between Cunard and Carnival. They were known for their cuisine and service. They were the line used by the Russian elite (read mafia).

We took a Celebrity Cruise right after September 11th. It was the worst cruise we have even been on! The food was terrible, service was atrocious, and I mean atrocious to the point of me writing a two page diatribe letter after we got home, and the other cruisers were the worst people I have ever met. People were mean, rude, dressed abominably for dinner, and just plain nasty. It was not neat and clean on the ship - again, service issues - and I just hated our time on board. Made all the worse because I got hurt and had to stay on board for the final two islands.

I mention it was after 9/11 because that may have had something to do with the issues. Cruising was way down in business, mnay berths were going unbooked. We got the cabin for a steal and I think in general many things were just lacking due to the decrease in travel going on.

Our itinerary was spectacular, though. We went out of San Jaun and did five islands including St. Kitts (AWESOME ISLAND!), Aruba, Barbados, and Margarita Island.

I won't be cruising Celebrity again.

We were on the Celebrity Infinity.

As to rain, It actually rained less than was forecast. We had many fine days, but raining in the ports kept my Visa Bill down!

The ship did offer loads of excursions, Not sure about the Train one on this particular itenerary. I book my own, normally, so didn't pay too close attention to those.

Try SHORETRIPS.com for on-your-own dependable trips.

Have loads of pics (289! Those digitals make it too easy!).

I will provide a link to be able to view them at Shutterfly ASAP.

We also did the Trolley Tour in Vancouver and it was terrific.

Tow of the four are height sensitive, so they did not want to do Capillano (sp?) bridge. I hear Grouse Mtn is great, just not for us. I wish I could take our girls to museums, aquariums, etc., but just can't get them there. We live in DC and they get museumed out.

Sorry for not posting as much lately. This last tax season was the worst ever!

I'm sorry that I'm a little slow this morning - what's a "BE" Is it a bear?

We sailed from Vancouver. Sailing was Sunday and we arrived Friday, leaving two days to see the city. Only needed one.....
To bad you didn't take a ferry over to Victoria - now that's a beautiful place. After our last trip to Vancouver and Victoria we decided that we didn't need to to Vancouver again - but spend the extra time in the Victoria area::yes::

Really, for me it's "What DW!!! It must have been tough all over this year. Audit season looks to be shaping up to be bad too so it's "What DW" once again!!

I think BE means Bald Eagle.

Thanks Jim, I enjoyed reading about your cruise. Sounds like you had a great time. DH and I would like to cruise to Alaska. We had a RCCL cruise planned for April 2007 right now!!! I know that I will compare it to DCL, but with the couple that we are going with, I am sure that we will have a great time no matter what!!!!

Oh, and bore us with ALL your pictures!!! Pretty please :teeth: !

BE is definitely Bald Eagle. Sorry about that!

Enjoy the pics!
