Just as a reminder, the players are:

Me - Brad, loves to eat and drink but gets full way too fast
DW - Lisa, short & skinny but can eat me under the table

Our stay:
10/24 - 11/4 @ POR

Again, my apologies for the long delay between posts. All three remaining days to be posted by end of this weekend!

Day 9 (11/1):

As mentioned in previous posts, I had been battling a bit of a cold during most of the vacation. I thought I had got past the worst of it on Day 8, but it returned with a MAJOR vengeance on Day 9. I awoke feeling like utter trash, and this would lead to our worst day of the trip.

Since I was grumpy, cranky and just all-around miserable, we skipped breakfast. We did decide to head over to Epcot for our second day of Food & Wine Festival tastings. Our tastings were as follows:

Taste of California - Vine Ripe Tomato and San Francisco Sourdough Bread Salad (I really enjoyed this, Lisa thought it was just "okay, a little boring"). Total = $2.00

Greece - Dolmas with Cheese (YUK!!! Neither of us liked this. I hated it. Made me even more miserable than I already was). Total = $2.50

Australia - Meat Pie (Again, a dish that I enjoyed more than Lisa -- this struck me as "comfort food" which I obviously was really in the mood for). Total = $3.00

Canada - Maple Fudge and Inniskillin Pearl Ice Wine (Lisa wanted both of these and really enjoyed both; I'm not a big maple fudge person but thought this was pretty good, and I tried just a sip of the Ice Wine and really liked it). Total = $5.75

Russia & Eastern Europe - Braised Duck over Cucumbers (I love duck and cucumbers, and therefore thought this would sooth me -- nope, didn't care for this at all. The cucumbers were tasty, but I just didn't like the way the duck was prepared. Lisa hated it). Total = $3.50

So far, not a great day for either of us. Ugh

We grabbed a bottle of water ($2.50) from Morocco hoping I could drown out my cold. Additionally, we had to stop our walking to go attend:

Culinary Demonstration - Fruits and Vegetables with Keegan Gerhard, Four Seasons. For those who may remember, Keegan was the incredible Dessert chef at our wonderful Reserve Dinner the prior night, so we just had to catch his demo. He chose to demonstrate how to use raspberries, and it was great (we all received a handful of recipes from him, as well as some of his handmade raspberry chocolates! Yum!). My one complaint is that they didn't give him enough time.

Following this we moved on to:

Japan - Golden Shrimp (This was one that Lisa enjoyed, and I didn't. Sheesh, tough day). Total = $3.00

Italy - Baked Rigatoni with Sausage, Pizza, Cannoli Siciliani (Okay, this is more like it! Definite comfort food, and agreed with both of us. Nothing special to be sure, but yummy!). Total = $7.25

By this point, I had gotten full. I was still miserable, and getting worse as the day moved on. We had a 7:00 PS at Citricos for this evening, but it was already 3:00. I was feeling like garbage, and neither of us were very hungry. This led to the worst decision of our entire trip when we decided to skip Citricos. Read on to see why...

Prior to leaving Epcot, we made a few more F&W stops:

China - Chicken Sha Cha (neither of us thought much of this dish). Total = $3.00

Mexico - Taco al Carbon (Lisa thought this was pretty good, I didn't like it very much. We both agreed the Quesadilla also being served here was much, much better). Total = $2.50

Total for "lunch" = $35.00

We headed on back to POR, so I could take a quick nap, hoping that would help me feel better. A few hours later (around 7:00) I finally wake up, feeling just as miserable as I did earlier.

We then proceeded to waste the next few hours arguing about trying to find someplace to eat. I was cranky, and Lisa was fed up with me. I wanted only two things -- soup and a fruit smoothie, and for whatever reason we seemed unable to find either (honestly, we were both acting like spoiled brats at this point). To make a long (and pathetic) story short, we finally ended up at:

Bongos Cuban Cafe (at Downtown Disney Westside; no PS) -

Don't ask me why we ended up here. Honestly, it was already like 10:30, and it just happened to be in front of us at the time. I can sum up our experience here as follows:

If all of my posts accomplish just one thing, I pray to God that it's preventing anyone from ever again going to Bongos to eat. This place was H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E!!! The food, the service -- YUK! And it wasn't simply because I still felt awful. I honestly can't say enough bad things about it.

As to what we ordered, we both had a black bean soup, I had a rice dish with chicken, shrimp and beef, and Lisa had a platter with a whole bunch of fried stuff on it.

The only thing that made this stop worthwhile was that, on our way out, we bumped into Keegan (the aforementioned super-chef) who was on his way in to eat. We gave him a little warning about our experience, hoping he might change his mind.

Our grade for Bongos Cuban Cafe - Negative 10 out of 10
Our total bill (not including gratuity, which wasn't much let me say) - $48.09

We left even more miserable than we were before. Off to bed and hopefully a better day tomorrow.

I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy Bongo's but, as with everything, people's likes and dislikes are different. We ate there and loved everything about it. The food was great and we had the best service we've ever had in a restaurant. The waiter was absolutely fantastic with the kids. He earned a BIG tip. I also loved the Food and Wine Festival. I really enjoyed the small servings so that I could try so many different things. Some I liked and some I didn't. Tried a lot of things that I've never had before.

I'm soooo glad to see your post, Brad. I'm been enjoying your reports and was just thinking about you yesterday, wondering if everything was OK.

Sounds like Day 9 was pretty much of a bummer. It's tough to be touring the parks when you should probably just be in bed, huh? The culinary demonstration you attended, though, sounds interesting. I think I would have enjoyed that.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!

Pat

I would have to agree about Bongos! Mediocre food, very slow service. With all the great Cuban restaurants in Tampa, we will never go back to Bongos. :(
