I took DH to Disney to celebrate his 60th B-day. For the first time, we stayed at the Swan. Normally, we're at the BC/YC/Boardwalk but frankly, the $150.00 a night we saved at the Swan more than made up for the slightly "less than Disney" surroundings.
No meal plan involved.
We basically ate almost every meal at Epcot. The first being the Yorkshire Fish and Chips and it was as good as I remember. The bartenders are still the best and the beer just keeps ya comin' back.
.
We stopped at Via Napoli and enjoyed every minute of it. Yes, with tip, it was $90.00. However, that included 2 big beers and a fruit drink, a really nice salad for two, a great appetizer of Parma ham and melon, and of course a Large Spicy Sausage pizza. The young waiter was to die for and clearly loved keeping his customers happy. A big thumbs up.
A snack here and there at MK/AK/HS but most of our calories were consumed in Epcot. We did make the obligatory stop at ESPN for the flaming Hot Wings and ice cold beer but otherwise, Epcot was our trough.
The french pastry shop? OMG, the best sandwiches around. Many trips back/forth to the English pub to refill on beer, as I need more than the little portion that France sells.
As strange as it sounds, at the Fife and Drum, we tried the jalapeno cheese stuffed pretzel and it was a huge hit. We carried that and popcorn to Germany where I filled up on Oktoberfest beer. Between Germany and England, the beer was a big hit on the trip. The bratwurst at Germany left a lot to be desired though.
We hit Mexico, the outside shop, and the chicken tacos were good. My DH is Hispanic and he was the first to say "not bad" for fast Mexican food.
Is the food gourmet? No...we are foodies but we went there expecting little and being surprised and happy when things were good. We also didn't plan any meals at the signature restaurants and I think that worked in our favor as to not be overly disappointed.
The surprise of the trip was how good the pizza was at the Boardwalk carry out pizza place. Perhaps the beer helped but even us Chicago people can appreciate a nice hot slice of foldable cheese pizza.
So when in doubt, nosh your way around the parks, pick wisely and drink plenty of beer. While I do enjoy cocktails, I've read enough on these boards to know that mixology is NOT a Disney talent. For good liquor value, stick with beer.
Boy, I sure am missing the Karmel shoppe.....dark chocolate covered carmels....
