Just an idea - daily letters for kids

Something we've done for years (since our son was about 3) that has made our trips very special and personal for our kids has been to make sure they get daily letters while in WDW. Before we go down there, I write one letter per day for each of the kids from a Disney "friend". I have used Disney printer paper, plain paper with stickers and sometimes I've used cut and paste pictures.

They are very simple and are only for our kids - not selling or writing them for anyone else (don't want to upset the merchandising/legal powers that be in WDW, :lmao: ). The first day is a welcome letter from ... who else.... Mickey & Minnie. Then, each day a different "character/friend" suggests things to do and even tells the kids about special events (like the princess breakfast or character ADR's, etc. that we have planned). They talk about getting autographs, pictures, etc, and about how fun some of the kids favorite rides are. The last day, they open one saying goodbye, have a safe trip home, look forward to seeing them next year, etc.

I found out when we moved recently that our son (13 years old) still has every single letter he ever got and keeps them in a box in his closet. I told him I was surprised he still had them, and he said he wanted to show them to his kids some day and do the same for them. Talk about a special moment for mom!

The letters don't have to be fancy, ours sure weren't the first few years! I literally hand wrote them the first year and attached stickers. Then, I started using the computer and cut & paste, different sized/colored fonts, special paper, etc. It's taken on a life of it's own. Our just turned 4 year old looked at the letters she got last year and said she hoped M & M still remembered her and would send her letters again.

Kind of sappy, I know...but it's made for some very special memories!

Just wanted to share something that can make a very personal memory for your kids.

How absolutely wonderful! :upsidedow I got teary-eyed reading how your 13 yo son has saved all of his letters in a box in his closet! Now that's magical! :wizard: It's moments like this that make being a parent worth every moment, huh?! :upsidedow

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if teens would like something like this too. This would make a neat extra surprise for the currently clueless ones going along with us.

Our son has let us know that he wouldn't mind it if he kept getting letters, :thumbsup2 His are different, not so sweetsy! But, I throw in things for him about maybe riding sea racers with his dad, or hitting an arcade, extra money that I sent to his parents (disney dollars as a surprise), etc. The best part of the letters is that they can be as personal as you want them to be.

I think it's a sweet idea and something that your kids will probably do when they take their own children to WDW. What a great tradition! Thanks for sharing it.

awww thanks so much for that....its so lovely to hear when children cherish these special memories and hope to share them with their kids.
thanks again
Elaine

Such an awesome idea...
I think I will try something like that, with my boyfriend, just add to a cute touch to the trip. It is my birthday trip, but I am trying to make this trip special for him too.

What a great idea! DH and I are taking our 5 year old niece this year and I have been trying to think of something simple yet special for her each day. This will work perfectly. Thanks!

Hey Lisa,

That is the most beautiful thing i have ever read. I'm definately going to do something like that (in years to come when i'm ready to have kids lol)

Esp nowadays when the world seems so bad, at least we can still make kids out to feel loved, special & everything around them magical.

Good work

Melissa

This is a great idea. I have seen were people have a postcard sent to a child before the trip but not this. I am stealing this idea and thank you for sharing it with us.

Thanks all! It's been great for us and can be adapted for anyone - boyfriends, girlfriends, etc. Anyone you want to give a special moment to. BTW, we usually leave them just inside the front door to the room so it looks like it was delivered early that morning, but you can have them "appear" whenever it works best for you (while swimming you can set it out, while napping, when they are in the bathroom for a minute, or can "magically" show up if you forget to set it out (I did a time or two,

OOO.. I like the Disney dollar idea. Good way to give a sort of allowance for the days spending. I will have to run it by the mom who is going with us.
It's a surprise trip for her 4 teens. This would even work with my 4 yr old who knows she is going and asks daily ---"can we go to Disney today?" I was trying to think of some sort of daily thing. I had read about the daily Tinkerbell gifts but thot that would get a little pricey and would be hard to hide from her before hand. These I can just tuck in the folder and give her one each day. Thank goodness she cant read yet....lol

HMM...I picked up a cute little folding box from $Tree that looks like a castle. THat might be good as a sort of mailbox and leaves room if I want to drop in a gift. Thank you again for the idea and I wont even ask for your finger.:rolleyes1 Sorry I couldnt help it.

WOW, great idea, I'll have to look for one of those, too!

Thot you would find that amusing;)

The boxes are sold in both a pirate chest---really cute as the top is kinda shaped like one-- and the castle looking one--which has a top edge that is up and down like the top of a castle.

Ours only has a few left. They only had one chest left at ours. Let me know by tomorrow if you would like to pick you up one (or 2) and you can just send me the cost back later. I dont normally do stuff like this but I really like your sense of humor.:thumbsup2 You made me laugh :rotfl:

It's such a great Idea! I am trying to write some our upcoming trip to my BF, but I can't get anything out on the paper :( I just haven't been creative lately. It sucks, it is such a good idea. Hopefully I can get something out before we go. I was thinking about adding a disney gift card for some spending money for him, since he does not have a lot, and refuses to let me pay for his extra stuff, this way he won't feel like he is spending my money. But I am wondering, if I get the gift cards in disneyshopping.com, will they work at the parks?

When we took my DNiece in 03 (I was not a member of this board and has no clue that any one else made invitations or letters....)
I made her invitations for her ADR's.... Even the ice cream social w/mickey and slid them under the door each nite after she'd gone to bed. One morning there was noise out in the hall, and that day happen to be Crystal Palace day and we told her it must of been :tigger: in the hall ... When we when to wait for the bus to go to Magic Kindom she stopped to talk to the conciege and asked if he knew tigger: was in the hall making all kinds of noise and left an invitation for her.. (I was afraid that he would blow my cover).... But all is magical in Disney.... he proceeded to explained that there are special guest and only they get special invations....
I could not thank him enough. :worship: ...
to this day my DNiece tells everyone you have to believe......pixiedust:
Memories are priceless....

I am excited. I cant wait to do this for my DD. Just have to wait till she is asleep at some point so I create without hearing MOOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!!!
