Am I doing something wrong? We have 21st Century and live in Montana. We have a 2001 Suburban and a 2003 Silverado Truck, so not new vehicles here! No tickets, nothing on our records. They put my DD16 on as an "Occasional Driver" but I just can't see how our 6 month premium went from $569 to $1169??? I did a quote on Geico and it was more - think I did something wrong though since it went to $1800 for 6 months. I did a quote with progressive and it was $874 for what looks like the same coverage, but I just don't see how it could be that much cheaper than 21st Century when we also have our homeowners insurance with 21st. A lot of people are telling me that's just the way it is, but wanted to check on the DIS to see if this sounds normal. Thank you!

In the car insurance world teenagers are considered high risk drivers most plans are significantly higher for teen drivers.

Same here in Georgia. Our insurance on both cars is $1,300 a year. Our daughter's insurance on her used car we purchased will be $1,700.

preaching to the choir. and don't even get me started on what happen to my rates when teenage son got into a fender bender at the mall.

I pay $1,400 annually for my son and that's with all possible discounts (good student, driver ed). He hasn't been in any accidents or gotten any tickets. The car he drives is in my name and is a 1990. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is.

That's why we switched to Progressive from AAA Insurance when DD turned 16. It was significantly cheaper for the same coverage and no claims history.

Now that DD is 19, we switched again to Liberty Mutual because we switched our home to them. I have no experience with their auto service but they were wonderful with our recent hail claim and roof replacement.

We will be adding DD15 on our insurance soon. We were told that ours will only go up about $35/month, because she will be driving my old 2000 minivan, yes an old car! My friend bought new cars for her kids and paid thousands of dollars of insurance cost for them to destroy the cars within a year of getting them.
Anyway, I found the following site. Very informative. I will definitely shop around. This article says that minivans are the cheapest cars to insure kids with.

Added later: My minivan will have only liability insurance, but we have an umbrella policy with the same insurer.

Our insurance for 3 old beat up cars, all over 10 yrs old, came to around $1200 with AAA. When we added DD16 it only went up about $650, last year. She is listed as primary driver on our 1996 Jeep. I thought it would be higher, so I was happy.

Now DS is turning 16 next month! I have already told him he will have the permit for a full year, as I want him to get a job and contribute towards his insurance. My friends' kids are all starting to take their driving tests, and I am hearing insurance rates for the boys upwards of $1K.

It sounds about right. When she turns 18, take her off and let her get her own policy. It will be cheaper as an individual then the add on price to your policy. Also, young female adults between 18 and 21 receive better rate quotes then males.

Be glad you have a daughter. Boys are even more expensive than girls when it comes to car insurance.

Statistically your 16 yo is a high risk driver. You can shop around but adding her will substantially increase any policy. If she's a good student you s/b able to get a discount but your premiums will still be high.

The average new, young driver has their first accident within the first 4 months of driving. Younger the driver, the more expensive the insurance cost. In Massachusetts, once the male driver reaches 25, the rates begin to drop rapidly, if accident free.

My 17 year old son was quoted about $2600 a year for insurance on a 2001 Chrysler Sebring. I had him check with State Farm. We have 2 cars and our house insured with them. Using his good student discount and our multi-car and multi-line discounts his insurance is about $1500 a year. This is in Louisiana. I am going to be shopping around since State Farm keeps going up every premium period. I just was able to join AARP and am going to check with them. It is Hartford. My agent says you're getting all the discounts available. Discount double check. Huh? Drivers who switch save hundreds. Huh? It's killing us.

Our insurance went up, but not as much as you're describing. Still, our 16 year old's insurance cost as much as DH's insurance, my insurance and the house insurance COMBINED. After two years of safe driving, it did go down -- just in time for her sister to be added to our insurance.

One fallacy that's been mentioned here: Girls are not cheaper to insure than boys. That used to be true in the past, but it was discriminatory, so the insurance companies raised the girls' rates to match that of the boys.

As a Californian, the $1169 seems like a bargain WITHOUT a teen on the policy, $569 is amazingly low.
Yup teens boost your rates, and I would be among those saying that's just the way it is.
It really doesn't matter a whole lot what your teen is driving (unless it's something like a Corvette), the premium is high because of the higher risk of them damaging someone else's car or property.

And another fallacy with some insurance companies, the Good Student Discount. Apparently Good Students tend to drive more, crash more, and generate more claims.

Only in certain states. Here they state that boys are more statistically likely to have an accident. Insurance costs are risk-based and if you fall into certain risk pools, you pay more. It's more expensive to cover people in certain areas based on crime rates/traffic etc.

Our friends have a DD 10 days younger than our son who drives the same car as our DS, only 2 years newer. Their insurance for her is $600 less a year than DS's.
