Just 10 year old daughter & me... Best advice? Not to miss?

Hi everyone!

Just decided on Monday this week... to take a 9/11 trip. I found some killer airfare and have some park tickets for myself already from when they didn't expire! Totally a LOW BUDGET trip!

I haven't been a regular/frequent visitor to the parks in SO long...taking my 10 year old daughter 9/11 for 5 nights. This trip is just the two of us & it will be THE first trip she will really remember. Dad staying home & older daughter in college. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm trying to decide on a few things:

1. Between bringing our own sandwiches vs quick service (and drinking water)....and do you carry them around with you all day? Isn't that inconvenient?
2. We may have a night or two for misc activities... I thought about the Ft. Wilderness sing along, but that whatever-counter food @ GF sounded good, too, to see the castle projections & the fireworks... What else do you think we would like to enjoy? I've NEVER been to AKL so would like to venture over there, too, to look around.
3. Sadly, we're staying off property. (Otherwise, I couldn't take the trip at all.) Our hotel shuttle offers nice drop times, but they only drop/pick up at HS so we'll have to transfer from there. I guess if we want to do Epcot, can't we walk over to the Epcot entrance (that is near the World Showcase)?

Anything else you can think of, I'm all ears!

Besides that. I always carry snacks.water, chapstick, and ponchos . I would take it by ear. Went with my 9yr old and he was just WAY over stimulated and we didnt do half the things I planned. Had to take a step back and jsut enjoy what you can.

First of all - your not home working, cooking, cleaning etc. so everything else is "gravy"! I have done a few mom & me trips with my daughters and you will have a blast so don't overthink and don't try to do too much. Some of our fondest memories are of pool time!

We do a combination of both packing and buying meals and water is our go to drink anyway. You can bring refillable water bottles and get ice water from a quick serve restaurant or water from the fountains. We bring frozen or shelf stable sandwiches, fruit and snacks and supplement with a meal. We usually did a late lunch as our "big meal" of the day either sit down or quick serve and this also helps as a break from the heat. You can find the menus online and decide ahead of time what's in your price range and interest. Sometimes my dd's and I will still split a meal and an appetizer at a sit down restaurant to change things up a bit.


Boardwalk is fun at night, they have street performers and you can see the fireworks from either DHS or Epcot - also imho the best ice cream anywhere at Ample hills. ALK is awesome - lots to do for a 10yo, animal activities, storytelling, the lobby itself is gorgeous - you can do stenciling of the illustrations, night vision animal viewing and the quick service restaurant is one of the best on property imho. The Poly and GF both have nice qs restaurants and viewing of the MK fireworks with music. Don't rule out Disney Springs, lots of qs restaurants, live entertainment and a great vibe. We like the Irish Dancers and the roaming piano player. Just stayed at Fort Wilderness and that would be a fun afternoon evening / movie / singalong, good food at the qs, and a great view of the MK fireworks from the boat dock. This may be a challenge transportation wise though.....

Your bus situation doesn't sound ideal - but you can make it work. Disney does provide direct transportation from park to park and from park to Disney resorts either monorail, bus or boat - and soon skyliner! You can also get from a park to Disney Springs after 4pm. Yes you can walk or take a boat from DHS to Epcot. I would consider budgeting a bit for rideshare as a backup especially if your staying in a park until closing. Post again if you have specific transportation questions.

You will have so much fun!! Just soak it in. My girls hadn't been since they were 2 and 4 and last April my mom approached me about wanting to send us on a trip (girls were 8/10). We planned a trip in 8 days and had the time of our lives just the three of us. Have some plans but go with the flow and the rest will be easy.
