They couldn't have worse timing. I'm called to start August 18. My classes start again on August 20!! But my major concern is DS. I really have a problem being in West Palm when he's so far away. He's an insulin dependent diabetic, and I'm really uncomfortable about this. I've called his endocrinologist's office and left a message to see if they can send me a letter. One of the reasons to be excused is..."I am a primary caretaker of a medically incapacitated person. (Submit a doctor's letter.)" They don't define what they consider "incapacitated." As it is I've always got my cell phone on vibrate while I'm in classes in case something happens. I can't imagine being on a jury and NOT being reachable!! I should change "primary" caretaker to "only" caretaker. It's worth a "shot"...bad pun. ;) If he were to have a medical emergency, it would be a nightmare. Not to mention that the earliest DS can be dropped off at school is 7 a.m. (hopefully the teacher is there on time!) Then be sitting in court 20-25 miles away at 8:00. Yikes!

Good luck! DH just got called, and obviously he won't be able to get to Pennsylvania from here, so we have to figure out if we just need to call, or send a letter, or what. Fun.

I was dismissed from jury duty by submitting a letter stating I was going to assist at an alternative school (starting the same week), which I hoped would give me a teaching position. I guess they felt they shouldn't ruin my chances of a job in the future. I would think that they wouldn't want you to miss college classes, as well as be away from your son.

I got my notice yesterday for jury duty on 8/11. I have to call the weekend before to find out if they settled the case.

Do you work fulltime or are you a SAHM. If you are a SAHM you will probably get out of it. If you work fulltime I would forget it. The take will be he is in school and you have child care for after so you are free to do jury duty. I honestly don't think having a child with diabetes is going to do it unless he is constantly out of control.

Btw I did jusry duty in a wheelchair last time and they fully accommodated me including arranging a staff interpreter due to my hearing loss. I didn't get on the case but it was interresting. One day and I was done.

Being a student isn't an excuse in FL. (Jeb seems to lean more towards the seniors than students and kids.) I would think students shouldn't have to go. And so did my friend in NJ where I'm originally from! That must be why I have it in mind.

Here's a good excuse they list (cough)...I am an expectant mother or a parent, NOT working FULL time and have custody of a child UNDER 6. Like 7 and above can stay home alone????

In general, we can postpone it. They give us 2 alternative weeks to choose from (both of which I'm still in classes!) A coworker of mine postponed hers once because she had to be on the west coast of FL for certification for something for work. When she found out from them which week she had to show, she got a really low number like 25 and HAD to go! :( No sense in postponing.

Well let's hope they have more sense than that! For a school nurse to NOT be able to reach a parent in an emergency is horrible! I can't imagine them letting any juror have a pager/cell phone on them in the court room. That would seem like them causing major neglect in my book considering the circumstances. Right now I'm not working, but have a full-time load of college classes.

That's a really young age! Here it's 10 years old. I still wouldn't feel comfortable leaving a child that age home alone.

Really? I wouldn't be comfortable leaving a 10 year old alone either. When I was 10, my mom was home from work at 3:00, and I was home at 3:15. I wasn't left alone either.

MY mom has jury duty starting on the 18th too, when she got the letter she looked at me and told me that, and I was like "Thats ok Mom I will have my lisence by then." So now I think i may be stuck dropping off and picking up my mom from downtown.

I'm thrilled to say that I've been Excused from Jury Duty! I'm glad they have common sense as far as needing to be available for DS 24/7. His Pediatric Endocrinologist provided a letter that he takes "life sustaining insulin" numerous times during the day and that a parent has much responsibility concerning dosage, blood tests, and his care. She also said that it's "imperative" that DS's mother be excused. Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! That's one huge worry down the drain.
