Jury duty could ruin my trip

Yes, I'm sure it varies everywhere! I have employees in 6 different counties and no one's ever been turned down who wrote asking for a reprieve! And that is without the employer having to get involved. But, trust that they will re-contact you in 6+/- month and at that point you must go!

My point, you have a pretty good shot of being excused/rescheduled as long as you communicate with the entity as soon as you're served the summons!
My wife got called twice in less than a year. Apparently they marked her as missing the first time even though she clearly went. Simply a clerical error on their part. I thank goodness for my exemption.

I have jury duty and my vacation at Hilton Head starts next week. Is there any exceptions to not losing my points if I have to cancel. Will the points go into holding?

I've been on a "Special Federal Grand Jury" now for over 2 years. Yes; you heard me right. My "service" will end in April of 2014.

Anyway, when you go on your appointed day ask to speak to someone. Tell them you already have a "paid vacation with airfare" and you should be excused. I'm assuming you're going there for the first time so make sure you let them know about your situation. And bring a copy of your reservation just incase they want "proof".

When I was selected back in 2011 the first thing I told the Judge when I was being interviewed was "I have a vacation with my family coming in October" and he said "we realize people have lives outside of the court; don't worry about it" and it was fine.

Good luck...but again make sure you let them know this as soon as you get there!! Actually, you may want to contact someone now; before you're appointed day.

Just read that you're already on a trial. I must have missed that. I have to ask; why didn't you tell them before you were selected that you had plans???

I'm already on a jury and the trial isn't going to be finished by the time my vacation starts,

Thank you for serving as a juror. It really is an important civic duty.

That being said, why didn't you tell the judge at the beginning that you have nonrefundable plans?

We were told that we would be finished before my vacation starts. With the delays and days we had off it seems like it will go passed what they said.
