June 5, 2016 - Magic Goes to England, Ireland, Scotland and France

It also mentions that you will pass the Standing Stones of Steness, which are really close to the Ring of Brodgar. There are not as many stones still standing here, less of a circle, but still awesome nonetheless.

St Magnus Catherdral in the centre of Kirkwall is full of interesting details. (well to my eyes anyway )

Inscription....don't you just love that font/typeface they used?!! lol

Decorative floor tiles.

Decorative stone inlay on the baptismal font.

Kirkwall is a lovely little town to look around, with a busy harbour, lovely individual shops and places to eat and of course, the cathedral. Several ferries also depart from Kirkwall harbour, to the outlying small islands.

I am not sure about mentioning shop names in case that does against Disboard rules. Perhaps someone could advise me as I would love to make some suggestions.

More photos to follow.

I can't believe how much excitement there is about this cruise already - here, there and everywhere. Love the photographs! This will be our 6th DCL and we have recently been to the British Isles - but this will be even more Magical to do it the Disney way!

Trader Sam - Thank you so much for taking time to post photos. What a beautiful place! I have dreamed for more than 35 years of seeing Scotland. I am so looking forward to even just our limited time there during this cruise, and your photos are spectacular. :)

Thank you keenercam! I have more to post.....stay tuned!

This "place of interest" is mentioned as being included in some of your Port Adventures. You have to cross one of the 4 Churchill Barriers to reach the chapel. Again, the barriers were created during the war years and are of great significance. Reading more about Scapa Flow will fill you in if you are interested.

The Italian Chapel is a very small but has an amazing interior. This was created from 2 Nissen shelters by Italian Prisoners of War. (google Nissen huts for more info).

The interior is all hand painted to look dimensional.

Very close by, is the Orkney Wine shop which sells wines and liqueurs, Orkney fudge in a variety of flavours (including malt whiskey), silver jewellery and some pottery and hand knitted items, all made by local artisans. Silver jewellery is a very popular craft in Orkney and I see that Disney is offering an excursion to a jewellers workshop and to the tapestry/artwork gallery. If you don't fancy going on this excursion, you will still see her jewellery in many places throughout Orkney. Her work is all inspired by her natural surroundings and the colouring of the enamels used is just beautiful (in my opinion).

Ok so now I am confused......according to post#43...you folks are in Kirkwall (Orkney) on June 9th. Have I got this wrong?

Thank you Trader Sam!!!! The cruise thread you are posting on is for the 2016 visit to Kirkwall. DCL is visiting them for the first time this year in July 2015.

This is great!!

Ahh I understand now. You folks have lots of time to plan and get excited then.

Aaaarrrgggghhhhh.... we just got the estimate for Nathan getting his wisdom teeth out next month. And all I can think of is what excursions we could do with that money!!!

In the meanwhile, I'm already thinking about Fish Extender gift ideas that are both inexpensive AND easily transportable! I'm likely going to borrow some ideas from those we sailed with in 2013. I know it seems early to be thinking about it, but we know we want to participate and summer is really the best time for me to start getting things put together.

:wave:I am so excited to go on this cruise! Myself and a friend went on the Med. 2014 and loved cruising 12 days!!!
We did book on the opening day.
DizC1288 ~ Cyndi and 3 friends Sharon, Lisa, Lucinda

This will be my 8th Disney cruise. I have also been to Alaska / Easter and Western Carib.

We are planning on flying into London and spend 3 nights before heading to Dover the day of the cruise.
For those of you that have already been to London....any suggestions as to where to stay?

If anyone else is heading to Dover the morning of....we certainly could consider ridesharing?

In the Med. we took all Disney excursions. I know there were quite a few that did their own.
We really don't know much about any of the ports (other then what I read on the Disney site)
We may be interested in "joining" other adults that might want to do the ports on their own tour.

Has anyone came across any artwork for the doors for these ports for the British Isles? I would love to start
getting our signs for our door done.........as I feel I should be doing something for the cruise already :)

It is along ways away....but I know it will go fast :) Looking forward getting to know fellow cruisers!
Cyndi

party:

We are staying 3 days in London this July to catch the 12 night Baltic cruise, staying at the Hilton Hyde Park (on points). For the British Isles cruise in 2016 my DD and I will be spending 5 days in Ireland visiting family, we will head to Dover to meet DW morning of cruise. Not sure yet what DW plans will be, but expect she would fly into London day before and catch shuttle or share ride to port.
:drive:

Thanks I will have to check it out! When time gets a little closer we can see if what people are doing and maybe make some connections for traveling to the port.

My family will be there, including my parents (48, 51) and us three girls (24, 22, and sister turning 21 onboard)!! We are all really excited!
