We did a split stay between the Wilderness Lodge and the Contemporary. We shouldn't have split the stay - we hated to leave the Wilderness Lodge. We have stayed at Grand Floridian RPC, Poly 2x, Boardwalk Inn, and I'll have to say our absolute favorite is now the Wilderness Lodge. We booked our stay here based solely on the many rave reviews we have read here on these boards expecting to not really like it when we arrived. Boy, were we wrong! We were celebrating our husband's 40th birthday and they made our experience magical. I had booked an AP rate of $139.00 woodsview. I asked at check-in how much to upgrade to concierge if anything available. I was quoted $60.00 upsell charge per night which we grabbed. We were then escorted up to room 7058 where we looked out on the balcony and saw the castle! We love the decor here. The thing that really impressed us so much about this hotel was the service. When we checked in I requested a bed rail for my son - it made it to the room before us. When I asked Carmelo in the lounge (what a nice guy!) if he had any caffeine free diet coke he brought me back two icy cans and said he didn't have any more but that he would order it special for us and place it in our fridge (wow, what service - at GF RPC we were begrudingly given a soda in a cup and told they definitely had nothing caffeine free).
Now, on to the part of the story that could have put a damper on our trip but turned out magical:
The morning after we checked in I noticed a couple of small damp spots on the carpet when I woke up; my husband and I assumed they had steamcleaned the carpet and it was drying so off to the parks we went. We came back that afternoon to rest with our 3 year old and when we walked into the room our feet went squish, squish, squish across the carpet. I decided to head to the concierge desk and ask them whom I should call to check it out. When I got to the lounge area the concierge manager was speaking to one of the CM's putting out food. I asked them whom I should contact. The concierge manager said he would contact maintenance and mousekeeping and have them right over to check it out. He wasn't kidding. Within minutes we had a host of people in our room, including the concierge manager checking it out. It was decided that they needed to move us to a new room, to my dismay because I didn't want to give up our castle view. The concierge manager (I need to find out his name so I can send a thank you so if anyone knows please pm me.) said we could go look at Room 7044 and if it was agreeable they would help us move. He also kept apologizing for the inconvenience. We went down the hall and looked - it still had a view of the castle and a great view of the monorail going into the Contemporary. Back to the room to pack. The concierge manager then told us that due to the inconvenience he was comping us one night's stay (wow, we didn't expect that!). He also personally helped carry our luggage to our new room. Our 3 year old son was admiring his lanyard with pins and he kneeled down and told me son to pick whichever one he liked. I nearly cried. FYI: It was a broken elbow under the sink behind the wall that caused the flood and was fixed pretty quickly from what we understand. All of this happened on my husband's birthday which could have put a damper on the day (haha) but turned it into a magical one. We also found a signed autographed picture of Mickey and Minnie with 3 balloons attached in our room the evening we checked in.
We absolutely loved this resort from the bellmen, to the checkin staff, to the concierge staff. The mousekeeping staff was also excellent - we had a fan for our toothbrushes our first morning and would come back to find my son's Dumbo on a mountain of pillows or playing the TV with his paw on the remote. Mousekeeping also had turndown service done each evening before we returned from the parks.
We rented a car so never tried bus transportation, found parking convenient, and loved the boat ride to the Magic Kingdom.

The Contemporary I won't say much about except that the view from the balcony of the castle was very nice, but found the whole experience a big disappointment after the Wildnerness Lodge. The front checkin experience was disappointing, handed an envelope with all info (nothing explained about the resort like at the WL), told our request for a higher floor could not be met, and when we got to our room, we found peeling paint on the balcony, and the room to have an overall dirty feel to it (it was never vacuumed our entire stay). I think we found this a huge letdown after the WL.

Wow , sounds like you truly enjoyed your stay at the Wilderness Lodge. Up until now, I had no desire to stay there, after reading your review, I am honestly impressed and would consider WL for our future trips.

What type of food offerings did they have at the concierge lounge?

Thanks :hyper:

We also had a great time at WL concierge. Very lovely people I would stay there over, over again. Glad you enjoyed your trip it makes planning the next one easy.

I'm so glad to hear your stay at Wilderness Lodge was great. Now you know why we love it so much, here's hoping for many future Magical Visits.

I just placed my reservations for a tower room at the comtemporary....after reading your review, I'm wondering....did I chose the right resort???

What do you think??

I'm glad to hear the 'uh-oh' turned into an 'all right'! I'm looking forward to my first trip to WL in June & I get so excited reading posts like yours!!!! :teeth:

 We loved the WL too. Our first trip to WDW was in July of 2002 with my DH and myself and my DD and DGD9 and DGD11. We had reserved 2 connecting rooms woodsview. Although we had studied the pictures and definately picked the WL for theming, we were still awestruck when we first entered the lobby. The impression is one of warmth and magnificent coziness. People were relaxing at the comfortable sofas and rocking chairs, kids were watching disney movies and "How the West was won" was playing in the background. Lots of people were checking in and out, but believe me this huge lobby can handle a very large herd of people.

We arrived around noon and our rooms were not ready, so we toured the resort and when we returned rooms were still not available, so we were upgraded to 2 rooms at courtyard view. It was wonderful. From our balcony, we directly overlooked the main pool, could watch the geyser go off and also watch the electrical boat parade in the evening.

The girls adored the pool and this resort is beautifully laid out for the children to go down to the lobby area for snacks and mug refills, play in the arcade and check out the pin trading kiosk.

My DH and I are returning to WDW in September, just the 2 of us this time at the Poly, but we will definately return to WL

to Bridgettesmom:
We missed some of the food offerings but the ones we saw were mornings: cereal, bagels, danishes, instant oatmeal cups, fresh fruit, coffee, juice, milk, large bottled water.
Lunchtime: mixed nuts, cookies, gummy worms (my son loves these!)
Dinner: A soup (the one we tried was a chicken with vegetables which was great), sausage with green peppers and onions, cheeses and crackers, pb&j's for the kids
Desserts: a cobbler, brownies and blondies, cookies, gummy worms
In the evening: sodas, juice boxes (although you can ask for these during the day), large bottled waters, and 3 different wines, and liquors.
Also, one of the things I like about the concierge is that a small refrigerator is in the room. We always rent one so this is a plus having it included and not having to wait for maid service to deliver one.

These boards have a way of making you second, third, and fourth guess your resort choice. In fact, I have been wondering if I should switch to Contemporary but now I am sure we are trying the right resort.
I hope we have as magical a time as you did!:hyper:

Thankyou so much for posting this great review Disneyfor3 !!!!

I always knew I wanted to stay at WL someday ! We are finally booked there this September, and your post makes me so much more excited now:jumping1:

We to are hoping for a concierge upgrade at a lower price. I know it will be pixie dust taking over if we are able to.But I also will not be dissappointed if we don't get one.

I love the WL ! We were there back in Oct 03 I took my little nephew and they made eveything perfect .
They are pretty smart when they upgrade you to the 7th floor cheap because they make sure you love it and want it the next time .
I am going with DH MIL & FIL in Sept. We sprung for the conceirge at full price this time :teeth: . I kept rethinking if I should just risk getting the upgrade when we get there and deceided that it was not worth it . We are all really excited . Thanks for your report that made me feel even better about paying full price !
Did you ge to meet Glenn ? He is so wonderful and took great care of us last year when we were there .

So glad to here you had a wonderful stay at WL. It certainly sounds like they treated you well. Glad you had a great trip.:sunny: ::yes::

So glad to hear that yoiu got to experience our little bit of Heaven here on earth. My DH and I LOVE the Lodge. The people are as specail as the surroundings.

We just got back from a three night stay at the Contemporary Tower yesterday. I may add more in a later post, but I have to say I agree 100% about the check in experience being dissapointing.. The first words out of the castmember's mouth were "I need to see two forms of id".. ...so much for a magical greeting. We also had problems with our room request, the room condition, the shower.... sigh.. In any event, the location was great..... steve c

Bottled water? The bottles of water are back? I hope they have these at AKL concierge. I heard they changed to pitchers of water that, of course, cannot be taken out of the lounge.

Thanks so much for your post! We're scheduled for a split stay at the WL/YC, and I had been second guessing our choices, and now am sure that I made the right decision...I can't wait! :thewave:

I think disneyfor3 may be talking about the large, glass bottles of water like they have at Poly CL. We were at AKL CL about 3 weeks ago, and they still have the carafe of water out (plus Perrier, in glass.) At the Poly, I simply asked the cm's if they had water I could take back to the room, and they brought me a large glass bottle of water.

We didn't get to meet Glenn this trip but we are definitely planning a return trip based on this experience and hope to meet him then.

No plastic bottled waters - they had two large glass bottled waters. My son likes to drink water at bedtime so I would fill up a styrofoam cup with water from one of these bottles and take it back to the room.
