The initial cost of joining DVC if you purchase directly from Disney is currently is a minimum of 160 points costs $16,640 plus closing costs. But if you click on the Timeshare Store link at the top of the page, you can find what is currently being sold in resale. The annual dues/maintenance fees starts at about $674 per year.
There is lot of info to figure out whether it works for you or not & you can read all about it at the link below:
DVC is Disney's version of a timeshare, so you are buying real estate for 30+ years. For your money (initial buy-in and annual member fees for maintenance and such) you get annual stays, anytime of the year, in any of the DVC resorts based on your home resort and the number of points you purchase.
The initial buy-in is more than twice what we paid when we bought in. It's not cheap.
You have come to right place to get educated. These guys are awesome and will answer any question without complaining, no matter how many times people ask the same questions.
We just purchased about 2 weeks ago and still have tons to learn.
the big perk is the ability to prepay your onsite stays at wdw for decades to come. depending on how many points you buy, you can stay in deluxe-ish hotel-sized rooms at very reasonable rates, or you can stay in multi-room villas complete with kitchen area, washer/dryer and jacuzzi.
the other perks - like discounts on annual passes, discounts on tours or dining, or options for trading out for cruises or other timeshares - can be altered significantly or sometimes go away entirely. they're nice but i wouldn't make them a big factor in the buying decision.
Our trips are a lot more relaxed now. We go a lot more now than before we joined. Matter of fact we bought our first annual passes this year. We tend to get the boardwalk view, which is spectacular.
We tended to go standard deluxe before DVC and usually had a beautiful view of the parking lot. I think if we didn't own DVC we would stay at POR every 3 or 4 years. The room rates just seem to go up and up.
We've also had a lower income while I finish my dissertation, and DVC has allowed us to go to Disney anyway. Priceless.
One other thing...DVC will tempt you to bring family with you. Beware...this can actually be a negative. Well...that is according to your family.
