Johnny Depp Says U.S. Is Like a Stupid Puppy
2 hours, 7 minutes ago

BERLIN (Reuters) - Hollywood star Johnny Depp (news) said on Wednesday the United States was a stupid, aggressive puppy and he would not live there until the political climate changed.

The 40-year-old actor, who stars in the "Pirates of the Caribbean," told the German news magazine Stern he was happier staying in the south of France with his wife, the French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis (news), and their two children.

"America is dumb, it's like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," he said.

"My daughter is four, my boy is one. I'd like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out," said the star of the off-beat films "Edward Scissorhands" and "Dead Man."

Depp slammed George W. Bush's administration for its criticism of French opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites).

"I was ecstatic they re-named 'French Fries' as 'Freedom Fries'. Grown men and women in positions of power in the U.S. government showing themselves as idiots," he told Stern.

What do you think?

I think he was absolutely adorable in POTC, but don't give a **** about what he or other "celebs" have to say in RL.

"America is dumb, it's like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive," he said.

How old is he again???? I think Johnny Depp needs to learn to carry on a semi-intelligent conversation before I could take him seriously. Some people need to learn when to keep their mouths shut. My 8 year old sounds more sophisticated when he speaks. Heck, my 6 year old even sounds more sophisticated than that.

I think they should keep their mouths shut. Most people really don't care what celebs think.

I think America is better off without him.

I think that up until 1 minute ago I HAD no opinion of Johnny Depp. Now I do.

I agree with MaryAnnDVC. As long as an actor entertains me, I don't care what they think. Mostly I like people who are confident enough to speak their mind. At least he's not like the other "actors" who said "if George W. Bush becomes president, I'm going to move out of the country"

Ummmm, maybe that's because he already lives in France most of the year??

Heck, I don't completely disagree with some of the things he said -- I mean, it was pretty ridiculous that we had high powered people worrying about renaming French Fries, "Freedom Fries" when there was actual important work to do.

This is also from the guy who said he thinks it's ok for his young children to smoke pot.

I think Johnny Depp is perfectly justified in saying whatever he wants. Afterall, the 1st Amendment applies to him no matter where he lives.

I'm sure he could have found a better way to phrase his thoughts, however. While I do not agree with everything we do (and most things the president does) I do think refering to the United States as a "dumb puppy" will not be very good for his career.

But so what...

You know what? Who cares? Some reporter asked him why he lives in France and he told them.
Big deal....There are a lot of Americans that are sick of our politics.

Don't get me wrong, I love my country. My father fought in WW II.
I am very patriotic, but, we are not everyones keeper.
We should not put our nose where it does not belong.

That is just my 2 cents.
Yes, I like Johnny Depp...and I agree with Robinrs. He is exercising his right to free speech.

The pot comment...come on...he said in GQ if his kids want to smoke pot when they are older he wants to score it for them.
Granted, I am not condoning any of those actions, he wants to make sure that there is nothing else in it, but pot.
BTW, it is an interesting comment on his part because he quit doing drugs. I wonder why he would want his kids to go through what he did.

**Added** I don't think it will hurt his career at all. Look at some of things (worse) I might add that other celebrities have done or said. Did not hurt the likes of George Clooney, Hugh Grant, Kim Basinger, etc.

Here are the entire answers to the questions posed by the interviewer:

(Question)They live with your family for four years in France. America is no more topic for you?

[Answer)No. I have still another house in Los Angeles and can also introduce itself to be now and then with my family for one while there but never for longer. My daughter is four, my son is old one year. I would like that they see America as toy. One plays a little thereby rum, looks at themselves it. And then nothing like away. They notice from alone that it is in the reason a broken toy.

(Question)The relationship of America and France is not the best.

(Answer) America is like a stupid puppy. With large teeth. It can bite and hurt you. An aggressive country. The American government and the media insulted the Frenchmen, are president Chirac an animal. I was glad, when I read that Pommes of frites by "French Fries" were renamed in "Freedom Fries". Adults of men and Mrs. in positions of power, people in the government outeten themselves at one time as idiots. I thought: Finally you show the world, what for full nincompoop you are. One must look at only our president, unbelievably. It concerned to it in the Iraq only the business. Around control. Money. And it is one of the worst liars, whom I saw ever.

I guess this is semi off topic.........but do people really call french fries "Freedom fries"? I haven't heard the term mentioned when I'm eating out. I only hear it in theory.

When did he get married? I thought he was living with his girlfriend (the mother of his kids).

He is not married...they are living together.

Yes, I have heard freedom fries. It was at a local rest. here when they first started that mess.

I have not heard or seen of it in quite a while.
I think people realized how stupid it was.

Much like other celebrities, I couldn't care less about what he thinks about anything. So long as he is a good actor, I don't care what his political blather is about.

I do find it kind of funny though that people talk about his First Amendment rights...I'm hoping that people really do realize that the First Amendment doesn't mean squat outside of the United States...it is totally unenforceable overseas.

Speaking your mind in France is a lot like speaking your mind here in the states. It is not a country where if you say something nasty about the president you could be shot.

It does not matter where he lives, he is still an American citizen.
Do I care what he says, No! I make my own opinion of this government.

I understand that, I'm just saying that to say "Oh, well he has a First Amendment right to speak his mind" really means absolutely nothing overseas, whether he is an American citizen or not. The fact that France doesn't care is irrelevant. It isn't his First Amendment rights that make it safe for him to speak out overseas, it is the fact that he happened to be in a country where free speech is not an issue.

True that the 1st amendment means nothing in France but luckily most European nations also allow freedom of speech.

Odd interview though. It reads like it's been badly translated.

Reading that translation gives almost no indication of what was actually said. I'd be curious to read it in a non-butchered version.

I never heard anyone, unless it was a politician looking to get on the evening news, call them Freedom Fires. I also thought that was a bit ridiculous.
It does not matter where he lives, he is still an American citizen.
Actually it does matter where he lives. I might be an American Citizen but that won't mean squat if I go to a country where insulting the reigning monarch is punishable by death and I call the King a horse's rear end. Depp just happens to live in a country that has similar laws regarding things like free speech.

I see this blowing over much quicker than the Dixie Chicks thing. Most people look on Depp as being out in left field anyway and won't take him seriously.
