The judge is absolutely making sure that the witness can't hear any of it...she uses a sound machine to be sure. It would be an outrage for a witness to be privy to a sidebar.

The judge needs to let the interviews with BOTH parents into evidence.

I think those interviews could be helpful to JODI in the sense that her parents are sympathetic figures and the jury may be less likely to want to convict these poor people's daughter of 1st degree murder. JMHO.
