Here it is, from HLN:
Today is the 35th day of court action in the Jodi Arias murder trial.
Costing taxpayers $838,000 SO FAR. ("the bill for the defense", per that Mike "not Brooks" guy on HLN, so not sure exactly what that means...paying the judge, and everyone else involved??)
Private attorneys, not public defenders. In Maricopa county, and others, private attorneys can contract with the county to be court-appointed attorneys. Which means they can maintain their private practice, but a lot of these attorneys rely on the contracts, and death penalty contracts, in this case.
Kirk Nurmi, for pre-trial proceedings, makes $125/hr; Jennifer Wilmott, $95. When you get into trial, that rate goes up. No precise figure but the lawyer on HLN (forgot his name) is looking into it.
Then there are the expert witnesses, also paid from that same Office of Public Defense Services. Experts typically work at a reduced rate for government contract work...basically it's a safety net for a lot of professionals to make sure they have steady income.
Dr Samuels, as we know, said he gets $250/per hour, and he said he met with Jodi around 30 hours so that comes to close to $10,000, and that doesn't include studying his notes, writing, doing his testing results, then his final report.
