Job Offer & Vacation?

My company is closing - have been there 25 years so this is all new to me looking for a job. I was offered a job, it is less money then I am making now, but less responsibility and 35 hours a week instead of 40. The people seem nice and I think I would like the job. At my old place is was nice having 4 weeks vacation and taking off if we had to run somewhere. This new job is 2 weeks after a year.

I'm so torn about accepting it - I want a new job because I worry that I might not find one that I like, but part of me thinks it would have been nice to have some time to do stuff around the house. But if I take this job my severance money from my old job is like found money.

I really wanted to take my son to Disney in May - do the 4 day cruise and the parks. He starts lst. grade in Sept. and I have been telling him we would go.

Do you think if I told the new place I have plans for a week in May they will be OK with that? I won't expect to get paid. This is all so new -

Sorry if I am rambling I just don't know what to do - at least I have all weekend to think about it.

I think the key is to negotiate the week off with no pay before you accept the job. Usually it is not an issue if they know up front. I would present it as concrete vacation plans and not something that you were just thinking about doing. Good luck!

I have done this before and I was up-front about it and they allowed me 3 weeks of unpaid leave.

My DH negotiated one week of "paternity leave", when he was offered a new job that "frowned upon" time off during the first six months.

I was interview for my current job last august. At the interview I let them know that in Sept of 2006 I would need to have two weeks off because of a trip I had already planned and paid for. They had no problem because they had enough notice. If you tell them that you have plans in place then there should be too much trouble.

I have done this as well. Two weeks off for something I already had planned about two months after I started said job

Just tell them about it up front. Make sure you have it in writing.

I've also done this and been upfront about vacation plans before accepting a job offer. I've found that if they like me and genuinely believe I'm what they are looking for, they are more than happy to work with me and give me the time off.

I, too, have recently moved to working fewer hours and taking a pay cut. I'm also working closer to home and I love it! I feel much more relaxed and I really enjoy being able to get more done around the house. I'd say go for it if you think you'll like working with these people. The worst thing that could happen is you don't like the job and you end up quitting shortly after taking it, and you find something else.

I would tell her on Monday when I called her to let her know that I had a week planned in May already. I'm so use to pretty much just taking time whenever. DH dosen't think it is a big deal that they won't have a problem with it. Me - I feel bad about it.

I was just talking with my girlfriend in MN and we were talking about going away for a couple of days just us girls at the end of March. That I couldn't do - accept a job in Feb. and take time in March. I will have to tell my friend we have to put it off.

With a 25 year work history most companies would negotiate PAID vacation time. I would tell them you are interested in the job but you had 4 weeks vacation with your old job and you would like to have that with this job.
