I recently completed a masters degree and am looking to enter the marketing field. I love disney but am not really looking to work for that company (just want to be close to the parks!) How is the job market in orlando?

Florida currently has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the nation.

Comparatively speaking, California has one of the better job markets currently in the country. Disneyland isn't all that bad. :thumbsup2

If can stand the arctic chill 6 months out of the year, Minneapolis has a very healthy job market and one of the lowest unemployment rates nationwide. We're only a 3 hour flight from the parks.. LOL

Florida job market sucks. I don't think there's one city booming at all.
Even Disney's done massive layoffs in different departments. Pretty much all that are non-union. Smushed together departments, got rid of departments, and they're combining a lot of things, like marketing between the east and west coast.

You might be better off finding a job else where and enjoying the vacation here. Plus florida's pay rates are some of the lowest out there.

hey thanks for the info guys. actually I had never thought of minneapolis before. I will add that to my list. I am not a fan of arctic chill but that is a cool city.

I never thought I'd be here this long, but I absolutely love it here. It's the big city that doesn't really feel like a big city. We've got an amazing music/theater scene, great outdoor/indoor activities. It's a fun place. What field are you looking to work in?

Rumor has it that we have fared better in the recession than some other cities. Not to say we haven't had layoffs, because we definitely have, but maybe not as many as other places. TX has no state income tax, which is nice. Dallas is home to a lot of corporate headquarters, so I would imagine there are marketing jobs to be had. If you like to shop and eat, this is the place to be! Oh, and if you like sports we seem to have an abundance of those, too.

Round trip airfare to Orlando runs about $200. ;)

I agree with you there. Dallas especially, has been lower then the national average by a few points at times even. I've had many friends that lost jobs, only to find a new one pretty quickly. Housing market is improving, construction is on the rise, retail sales are going up. Hell, I went to the mall yesterday and you could have sworn that it was Christmas. It was crazy. We've been lucky around here.

ok, texas has been added to my list too! actually I know ppl in austin and houston and they seem to really like it there. Marketing is sucky here because u have to know ppl to get a job, but I may have better luck in a bigger metro area. Thanks for the input, and if anyone has other suggestions, I would love to hear them!! Also, what about conferences? Has anyone had any luck networking at conferences, making contacts/ scoring jobs that way?

Add the Triangle area of NC! Raleigh/Durham & Chapel Hill are BOOMING! New companies coming in, EVEN in a recession. The job market is very good here, and the cost of living is very good. Warm weather 1/2 of the year, come on! :thumbsup2

MJ - Conferences / networking are extremely important! Check out
www.the-dma.org for a listing of all of the DMA sponsored conferences - of course business isn't great in many sectors but it usually doesn't cost too much to get a floor pass to many conferences. Have you joined Linked Inn? It's a social networking site that's more business than the others.

Good luck! ;)

Soulmates thanks I will look into NC too! Tony thanks I am going to fill out a Linkedin profile and touch up my resume today. Thanks for the great info everyone:)
