Do you have one? My mom really wants me to pay for my own gas when I start driving to school this October, so I need to work during the school year.

I really don't want to continue working at acme during the school year. I don't know how the hours are going to be, and most of my friends plan on quitting before school starts. I don't know if any other teens are going to work during the school year. Plus, I don't know if acme just hired me for summer employment. I don't know if I can handle both my schoolwork AND a job. And I don't want to work 24/7. I want time to hang out with my friends on weekends.

But, I don't want to take the bus, and my car will rot in the driveway. Is it common for teens to work during the school year?

well its different for me cuz im homeschooled so ive got a flexi schedule which is great
i have a few jobs here n there like
mowin lawns
cleaning house
walking dogs
babysittin
;)
n im 15

Unless it is babysitting I don't have one. I am too young(14) to actually have a job where I live. I may volunteer at the library or something during the weekend.

Well, about half teens don't work, and about half teens do.

I personally want to because lol I want to. I just love the idea of working and keeping busy and making money lol (Yes, I could very well be a workaholic when I grow up)

My sister worked too, but only because she wasn't doing any clubs or sports.

but I think that we have our whole lifes ahead of us that is nothing but work, so why should you start now, right? If you're going to be working you're whole life, why do you need to start young? If you don't want to work then you should enjoy the time you have where you don't work. :goodvibes

I started my first job last year over spring break and worked through the end of the year. I'm still there and am going to continue during the school year too. Last year, it wasn't bad because it was the end of the year so really the only thing I had to worry about was finals. The cool thing about my job was we were all from different schools and had different finals schedules so it worked out well. I would work from like 4 till about 10 or 10:30 every few days. It wasn't bad as long as I managed my time well (which I was good at from sports). But this year, being my junior year, and it just being the beginning of the year I am only working two days Sunday - Thursday and either Friday or Saturday. One advantage to my job is it is really slow in the winter.

So basically, if you don't know if you can handle it, then think about it. Talk to your parents, your boss or manager. Then decide. Maybe even talk to other coworkers about what they do/are doing.

I'll probably start job hunting again once marching band season ends. If you're still in band [I think you are], you should probably wait until the season slows or even until its completely over. Yeah, that pushes you back a month, but you'll probably have more time to get serious about a job after the season's over. Then again, quite a few kids in my band have jobs, but where they work seems to be flexible for games & practice & the like. If you want to look for a job during band season, look for one that offers flexible hours for you.

I got my job at Chick-Fil-A[eat more chicken :goodvibes] last september during my junior year. My parents told me they would get me a car once I get a job and could support some of the payments. I liked working because I got some extra money every two weeks[even though a lot of went towards the car....] and I could do things on my own and buy my own stuff and what not. I also like who I work with and its a cool enviroment[most of the time...] There were days where i DREADED going to work. & I usually worked all weekend[except sunday] so my social life kind of took a back seat. Since I rode horses right after school everyday, and was in multiple clubs as well, on the days I did work I didn't get home till around 10. Which isn't bad at all, but I then I had a lot of homework to do.

I don't know if your job would let you do this, but ask if you can just work weekends. I know a lot of people I am friends did this. You could also do this for the first part of the year till your school schedule gets adjusted.

Yea. I was just thinking about that then I read your post. Acme is very flexible (or so I hear) and so I'll have to have Tuesdays (or Thursdays, i can't remember when our MB practice is and Fridays. and the occasional parade) And if I make it in Jazz Band again, I'm going to need all Wednesdays off. (Two people from Jazz Band worked at acme last year, so I think they'd give me off :p) I'll talk to my managers about it.

But my real problem is with Drama. The schedule is shaky, and we have practices Monday-Friday and throw in the occasional Saturday when it's close to the show. But I only do the Spring play.

I'll probably ask just for weekends. And maybe monday, tuesday, and thursday. I don't think I'd have much to do on those days.
And my cousin works at Chick-fil-A. He loves it (I think, all I know is that he works a lot. xD )

I had a job in high school at CVS, and my work was very flexible. If I had a lot of homework, I would call and ask if I could come in an hour late or something. They almost always said yes, unless they had a lot planned for me that night. And when I requested certain days off, they gave it to me. When you apply for a job, just make sure the boss is aware that you are a hard working student and you need them to be flexible. If they can't be, then I would keep on looking.

I'll be working during the school year at a movie theater to pay for gas money.
The hours are really flexible there.
I need a flexible job because I visit my mom for 8 weeks during the summer and 2 weeks during the winter.

Its a good job, and I wish I worked more, especially in the summer. I am only getting 7 hours this week :sad2: I hate my new manager. My old one was awesome.

You could stick with Acme until the seasons over, to make some income, and then switch later?

Thanks everyone :] This really helps a lot with my decision. I don't feel as bad as I did about working during the school year.

switch? what am I switching to? (it's been a long day, sorry xD )
and I think I'll try to work during the season. My band only practices once a week, and then the game is always on friday. So, I'm not asking for much.

And I just filled out an application for blockbuster, and I just requested weekends. But, I guess I'll work acme through the year, unless another job oppertunity comes up.
