...you get passed up for a promotion at your current job, and then apply elsewhere and have a FANTASTIC 'home-run' interview... and then they decide to pursue another candidate?

....and neither of them give you ANY negative feedback at all?

:confused3

Talk about frustrating. :guilty:

I used to conduct a lot of job interviews. There are a number of reasons why there may be no negative feedback for a candidate. Depending on the number of interviews held, there may have been several excellent candidates. The final decision is often not based on the interview alone--sometimes the interviewer may be looking for a particular quality and something one interviewee did during the interview convinced the interviewer that person was the best fit for the position.

I'm sorry that happened that way. At least if nobody has negative feedback you can know you aren't doing anything wrong, so one of these times it will work out.

You have every right to vent about it though, it does suck.

What I hate worse is applying for a job - having an excellent interview - getting positive feedback - and then being told they decided not to fill the position - they just posted it to see if they found someone they wanted rather than needed :confused3

Or that they didn't choose you on the basis of experience when they KNEW my experience from my resume and didn't need to interview me 3x

If you are still really interested in a higher ranking job with your current employer then have a sit down with your supervisor or whoever is in a position of power with the other department/group you would like to work for and ask what qualities a "good candidate" for the position would have. Then ask for specific examples of how you can show this quality while still maintaining and completing your current job.

For example, I had a super guy working for me in his current position and he was invaluable in that position but he never stepped it up and proved that he was capable of working at a manager level. Just because you are good at your current position isn't indicative of your skills at a higher level. After a chat we gave him a list of things he needed to do to demonstrate that he could function at a higher level.

How would you get negative feedback?

I guess constructive was the better word. I like to know WHY I didn't get the job, and in every interview I've had that I haven't "won", it has been because of lack of specific experience (I always ask).

OH , well i think its a sign of the job market being so bad. employers have a pick of over qualified people right now. I know my office has a few people with masters degrees working for 14 bucks an hour :-(.
