I keep seeing posts about jellyfish in Mexico (prior infestation, now larvae) all stinging of course. Beach and snorkling don't sound so appealing with stinging creatures. Anyone have good beach or snokel excursion experiences in Mazatlan (particularly Stone Island)? :sad2:

Also, has anyone used Safe Sea (WD40 also suggested???) to prevent stings? Did either one work? :confused3

Thanks for any info.

We didn't do any beach excursions in PV, but we did take a brief walk on the beach at Mazatlan in the Golden Zone area.

Apparently there's an infestation of jellyfish in Mazatlan. Some people who booked the Stone Island excursion were given the option by Disney to cancel their excursion because of the jellyfish problem.

We personally witnessed a young boy from the Disney Cruise get stung in Mazatlan. The poor kid was screaming in pain. A local helped out by spraying WD-40 to reduce the sting.

There were jellyfish eggs everywhere on the beach. After seeing this, we left immediately.

Thanks for the info. We're a family of 5 traveling with another family. If we cancel Stone Island, do you have any recommendations for what we can do in Mazatlan? On our other port excursion days we have activities booked that will not include our almost 5 year old son, so we would like to make sure he is included on Mazatlan. Thanks for any info.

We initially did not have anything scheduled for Mazatlan. We got off the ship and started browsing through the shops near the port. We were then approached by a local tour company on a city tour via an open air trolley. They were asking for $20 per adult, but they settled for $15. Kids were free and you also get a complimentary soda and a free charm bracelet from a jewelry store where we made our final stop. We had a 5 year old and a 7 year old. Other families also were in the tour and they too had young kids. It was a pleasant tour, taking us through Old Mazatlan, a stop near the cathedral to do some shopping, seeing cliff divers, and then finally to the Golden Zone where they gave us 1 hour to do whatever we wanted (eat, beach, shopping, etc). They made several stops along the way to accommodate us taking pictures of the sights. Disney offers a similar tour and I'm sure we paid a fraction of the Disney cost. I recommend it because it wasn't too long for the young kids, and we got to sample Mazatlan. The name of the tour company was Marlin Tours. Our tour started at 12:00 and we were back on the ship by 3:30.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to remember to write down the name of the tour company.

No jellyfish at PV, we spent quite a while in the water today. We're booked for Stone Island Horseback Ride tomorrow, so I'll let you know what we see. If we can't swim, there are other options on the Shoretrips tour we are taking, so we'll make out one way or the other.

We found that as the day progressed the jellyfish went away at Stone Island. My DS5, my wife and I got zapped but a little WD40 and we were all back in action. It wasn't disabling.

It was just annoying. I am sure if I was bit somewhere besides the ankle or I was particuallty sensative I might have felt different.

I think you have to run the risk if you want to be in the gorgeous warm water. Your odds of being bitten are variable each day based on the wind and weather.

You can't see them that well so there isn't much that can be done by being vigilante.

so you put the WD-40 on after you are stung? I heard to use alcohol or meat tenderizer. :confused3

I heard WD 40 prior to swimming to protect against zaps. True?

My husband, son and two nephews were stung by the jelly fish eggs. The mexican women that helped us cleaned the stings with bottled water, then alcohol and then sprayed with WD-40. The WD-40 stopped the stinging immediately. I wouldn't recommend putting it on before hand. She said that the WD-40 acted as a silicone protectant on top of the sting. I don't know how it would react with or change the effectiveness of sunscreen and you would definetly want that on!
